ArchwayClassicalSchools’Philosophy“AClassicalEducationforModernTimes”
By Dr. Terence O. Moore Doctrinasedvimpromovetinsitam, rectiquecultuspectoraroborant.*
ArchwayClassicalAcademyhasdeliberatelytakenaclassicalapproachtoeducation.Thatis,weadheretoanancientviewoflearningandtraditionalteachingmethods.Suchachoicemightatfirstseemparadoxical.Why,atthebeginningofthetwenty‐firstcentury,intheageoftheinternet,inacountrythathaslongbeenaddictedtotherevolutionaryandthenovel,shouldaforward‐lookingschoolrootitselfsodeeplyinthepast?Isnotneweralwaysbetter?Whatcanyoungpeoplelearnfromoldbooks?Wemustanswerthesequestionsclearlyfromtheoutset.
Classicaleducationhasahistoryofover2500yearsintheWest.ItbeganinancientGreece,wasadoptedwholesalebytheRomans,falteredafterthefallofRome,madeaslowbutsteadyrecoveryduringtheMiddleAges,andwasagainbroughttoperfectionintheItalianRenaissance.TheclassicalinheritancepassedtoEnglandandfromthemothercountrytoAmericathroughcolonialsettlement.Atthetimeofthisnation’sfoundingclassicaleducationwasstillthriving.JeffersonheartilyrecommendedGreekandLatinasthelanguagesofstudyforearlyadolescence.OneoftheFoundingFathers’favoritebookswasPlutarch’sLivesoftheNobleGreeksandRomans.FellowrevolutionariessoadmiredWashingtoninlargepartbecauseheremindedthemoftheRomanpatriotCincinnatus.SoimportanthasclassicaleducationbeeninthehistoryoftheWest,thatitwouldonlybeaslightexaggerationtosaythatthemarchofcivilizationhasparalleledthevibrancyofclassicalschools.Unliketheoldclassicalschools,ATWdoesnotmakethemediumofinstructionLatinandGreek.Nonetheless,ATWremainsclassicalbyupholdingthesamestandardsofteaching,ofcurriculum,andofdisciplinefoundintheschoolsofold.Indeed,weteachEnglishasaclassicallanguage.ATWthustakesstockinthe“triedandtrue”ratherthaninthelatestfadspoppingoutofthenation’sschoolsofeducation.
Apartfromthisimpressivehistory,ATWhasembracedclassicaleducationforatleastfourreasonsthatseparateitfrommodern,progressiveeducation.Classicaleducation:
• valuesknowledgeforitsownsake; • upholdsthestandardsofcorrectness,logic,beauty,andimportanceintrinsictotheliberalarts; • demandsmoralvirtueofitsadherents;and• prepareshumanbeingstoassumetheirplacesasresponsiblecitizensinthepoliticalorder.

Classicaleducationhasalwaysbeenconcernedwiththepoliticalorder.Aristotledefinedmanas“bynatureananimalintendedtoliveinapolis.”Accordingly,fortheGreekseducationwasessentiallypolitical.Allfreecitizensboretheresponsibilityandtheprivilegeofvotingintheassemblyanddefendingthepolisfrominvasion.Youngboysweretaughtfromanearlyagehowtospeakandhowtofight.TheAmericanFounderssimilarlyhopedthatschoolswouldteachyoungpeoplehowtopreservetheconstitutionalrepublictheyhadcreated.Theyrealizedthatafreegovernmentdependsnotonthedecisionsofafewpoliticiansbutonthewisdomandvirtueofapeople.Politicalwisdomandvirtuedonotcomeeasily.MorethantwocenturiesofAmericanhistoryhaveconfirmedthatthisnationcanbesustainedonlybycitizenswhounderstand,serve,anddefendherfoundingprinciples.Asmuchastheyembracedfree,constitutionalgovernment,theFoundersfearedtheuncheckedpassionsofanuninstructedmultitude.Inthislight,ATWregardsthedeclineinpoliticalknowledgeinourdayasdangerousasthewaningofintellectandvirtue.ArchwayClassicalAcademieswillprovideapoliticaleducationworthyofthisnation’sfoundingprinciples.
