Families and the Gospel ~ Matthew 20:1-16a
Today Jesus is saying to us: “Why are you idle? Go
into my vineyard.” Family, where “the last will be
first,” is the “vineyard” entrusted to us in today’s
gospel. Successful families are constructed by
“laborers” who work hard on family relationships
and not by couch potatoes.
A Rosary Rally will be held on Saturday, October 14th at 12 noon at the Tyrone Hotel park on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 10th Street. This rosary rally, which is held through the organization America Needs Fatima, is in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun. The purpose of the rally is to pray for our nation in public so that everyone can see what we believe and in reparation for the sins that have been committed in our modern world. There will be many ways of assisting with this rally. A sign-up sheet and information will be available in the Gathering Space after weekend masses. Please contact rosary rally captain, Sarah Zakrzwski at 632-3070. NOTE: If you cannot attend this Rosary Rally there will also be a Rosary Rally at Heritage Plaza, 11th Ave., 14th Street in Altoona at 12 noon on October 14th.
Life Chain Citizens Concerned for Human Life
will be sponsoring a Life Chain in Altoona on

9th Avenue, and we will be praying for an end to
abortion. Please contact R. Thomas Forr at 946-
0681.

JUSTICE, BUT WHOSE PERSPECTIVE?
“Take what is yours and go… Are you
envious because I am generous?”
Matthew 20: 14-15
THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP
AS A WAY OF LIFE
“So the last will be first and the first last”
Matthew 20: 16
You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but
how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible
passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own
lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to
generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them
for our own use. Our gratitude and generosity helps us
live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.

Liturgical Reflection: September 24th After the Our Father at the Mass celebrating Matrimony,
the prayer “Deliver us” is omitted and the couple receives
the Nuptial Blessing. The priest, standing and facing the
bride and bridegroom, invokes upon them God’s
blessings. The Nuptial Blessing is never omitted at Mass.
There are three different blessings to choose. The
engaged couple in planning the celebration of Matrimony
is invited to select one of the three Nuptial Blessings.
This is an ancient prayer for the newly married bride and
bridegroom in the Christian tradition.
Stewardship Reflection -25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The vineyard owner in today’s Gospel asks, “Am I not
free to do as I wish with my own money?” We are
likewise free. Is a generous return to the Lord, in
thanksgiving for his many blessings, among the choices
we have made?
HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF EFFORTS
The matching challenge has been met! We are grateful for the outpouring of generosity from parishioners in the total of $7,585.58 in last week’s collection!!
HEARTFELT “MESI” (CREOLE “THANK
YOU”) FOR CCW HAITA SEA CONTAINER
DONATIONS! It took all three 7th, 8th, and 9th
grade Religious Ed teachers and students to
organize and pack the collected items into the three
cars of Sr. Karen, Sr. Jane and Shirley Hall –with no
room to spare! “Mesi!” to all for your generosity,
including financial donations. Note: Financial
donations can be made at any time as it is always
hand delivered, never shipped, to the Little Sister of
the Incarnation when CCW Sisters and their
companions visit (next trip: January 2018).
ADULT SPIRITUALITY CLASS—
THE FIVE W’s (and HOW) OF PRAYER
Starting Date is This Tuesday, September 26th!!
Seniors in high school through senior citizens are
welcome to explore our church’s rich tradition of prayer
on Tuesdays, September 26, through October 24th, 7-8:30
PM with Sr. Karen in the Gathering Space. We will take
a look at the various types of prayer that support our
individual and communal relationship with God. There
is no cost, no registration. Just come with the desire to
enrich your prayer life!
ANNUAL PET BLESSING will take place next
Sunday, October 1, at 12 Noon in the parking lot behind
the church. All kinds of pet animals are welcome (with
owners’ control and poop scoopers!) to this 15-20 minute
prayer service/blessing.
Tours of the Altoona Cathedral will be conducted
thru the month of September. This is the month in which
the Diocesan Cathedral was formally dedicated in 1931.
The Altoona Cathedral is offering tours of this magnificent
house of worship. Contact the Cathedral secretary, Sue
Cronin at 814-944-4603 to take part in the remaining one-
hour guided tours on Tuesday, September 26th at 7 pm.
THIS WEEKEND, all parishes in our diocese will take up a
special collection to support our diocesan priests’ medical and
retirement needs. Donations will help subsidize medical care
as well as the medical and living expenses of our senior priests.
Once a priest achieves senior status, he no longer depends upon
a parish for basic needs even though he continues to celebrate
masses and perform other pastoral ministries. Your generous
support allows the diocese to provide modest stipends to our
senior priests while keeping increases in the parish’s
assessment for priests’ medical care and retirement needs to a
minimum. THANK YOU!!
THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL is the theme of a special
