Solidarity Cross for

Christian Relief

Brother Knights, To your left is the order form and background information for the Solidarity Cross that was featured at the Supreme Convention by our Worthy Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson. This cross represents the symbol of Suffering, Unity and Hope of the Christians in the Middle East, and in some ways also occurring in our country as well as intolerance is rampant. We need to order this cross and sell them to your Parish community in a big way. I encourage all of you to please make this purchase to help the Middle Eastern Christians. The Christian population has been wiped out of the region by 2/3's of what it was previously to the invasion of ISIL. This level of religious persecution has not been seen since Hitler was in power in the 1940's, as the world stood by and watched. We cannot afford to ignore this situation! Please make the purchase and start selling!! God Bless, and Pray for an end to the persecution of religious freedom. SD Kerry

Knightline - September 2015

Pocatello KC Golf Riverside Golf Course - September 13th.

51 golfers participated.

Lunch was served after the tournament at the Elks Lodge. A great help from Bob & Debbie Fitzsimmons for coordinating this.

The winning blind draw team was Kerry Hennessy, Saralee Anderson, Marissa Morrison and Shawn Wilcox.

A $10,000 prize for a hole in one on #13 was offered. The hole was monitored by personnel from Channel 6, tournament co-sponsor. A huge thanks to the KPVI-TV for all the publicity provided. No one got a hole in one.

Golfers took home many great raffle prizes.

A huge thank you to everyone who was involved with our very successful golf tournament. Many of our brother Knights were involved with planning, soliciting donations, registration, playing and the tournament lunch. I especially want to thank our tournament director Jim Robinson. This is a really fun tournament and raises money for our council’s charitable activities. A job well done to all.

Website Update

Here is an update on the new state council Website.

First, we chose GoDaddy.com as our new provider. Our new host has server-side scripting, email services, and database services available in our host environment. Server-side scripting allows users to ask the website to do something and the website will create a set of web pages “on the fly” to answer the request. When email services are brought online, each Knight will have his own email address and post office on the website and no longer will have to supply their own email address. This post office will allow Knights to keep their knights emails separate from their personal mail and make conducting knights business easier. The database service will allow the Councils to store Knights business information safely and allow only authorized people to look at this information. With these services, the State website can become “information central” and be a great asset to our state organization and local councils and assemblies.

The website will also have a new look and feel. Below is the proposed main page for our website. The “in the spotlight” section is an image slider which cycles through a number of posters advertising current topics of interest. Below this is the RSS news feed from Supreme. There are three pulldown lists for councils, assemblies, and newsletters. Choosing a council or assembly takes you to its web site. Each council or assembly will have a website with the same features as the main State page.

Below the dropdown lists is a button called “enter the chambers” . The main pages are geared toward the general public and so are designed for public affairs content. The image slider is the main tool for this. Once a user “enters the chambers” for either the main State Council or any of the local councils or assemblies, they will find content oriented toward the Knights in particular, such as officer lists, council calendars, Knights email post office, etc.

This is an ambitious project and will be in a constant state of development. We are almost at the end of phase one, which is to move all present content into the new website “idahokofc.org” and let the present one expire at the end of the year. Since the bulk of the content is Knights related, “the chambers” is being built now. We will keep you posted and hope to roll out the basic site soon.

Assembly Actions Paul Callahan - District Master

My Brother Knights and Sir Knights,

Here are some of the numbers we received from the Provincial Meeting a few weeks ago. As I said last month, Idaho is doing GREAT! Our Province, Archbishop Francis Norbert Blanchet, is made up of Idaho, Oregon, and Eastern and Western Washington. Our province came in 2nd in our division with 80% of our membership goal. Idaho led the way with 92% of our goal followed by Western Washington with 80%, Oregon with 55% and Eastern Washington with 53%. All four Districts added a new Assembly. Our Province is in good shape.

You hear a lot about Assembly and Council Growth and how important it is for the life of our Order. Here is makeup of the Fourth Degree as of July 1:

Age 18-29 5,953 Age 30-44 27,312 Age 45-64 143,857 Age 65-up 175,768

As you can see we have 319,625 members over the age of 45 and only 33,265 under age 45. The average age of a fourth degree member is 64 years old. If we don’t start getting some younger members into our assemblies in the next 20 to 30 years, we could be history. For those in the Treasure Valley we have a Fourth Degree Exemplification in Nampa on October 24th at 2pm. If you are a 3rd degree member and are interested in the Fourth Degree, you can contact me at [email protected]. I can get you the information you need and contact information for your Assembly.

Pocatello Fourth Degree As a member of the Patriotic Degree there are Assembly's in Idaho, that as part of your reaching the highest degree in the Order and being called "Sir Knight", you can have a chalice provided to a church or mission in your name. If your Assembly has such a program reach out to the Faithful Comptroller to inform him of your wishes to have a chalice and to where you would like to have it gifted.

On September 27th the Bishop Gorman Assembly met at St. John's Catholic Center on the Idaho State University Campus and provided a chalice in the name of Honorary Life member Ted "Doc" Maheras.

L to R - Stefanie Powers (granddaughter) with Jozelyn Powers (great-granddaughter) and Cooper Powers (great-grandson);

Terri (Maheras) Benson (daughter); Steve Maheras (son); Fr. Hugh Feiss; Jerry Stroschein - Bishop Gorman Faithful Navigator; Barry Maheras (son);

and Pete Espil (St. John's Campus Minister).

State Chaplain

Father Rob Cook's Homily

This month, I was able to participate in an ecumenical memorial service for children who have lost their lives through abortion. It was at Cloverdale Cemetery here in Boise. We all gathered near the monument that had been erected by Knights of Columbus councils. Members of the Knights of Columbus Color Guard were also involved in the procession. It was great to see the witness of the Knights in this prayer service.

It was also good to hear the stories of a couple of individuals. One was a woman who had several abortions before her conversion. Another was of a young woman who was an abortion survivor. Their testimonies were great examples of the importance of this ministry.

At the same time, this experience reminded me that all of our ministries are opportunities to protect the dignity of life and to change lives.

May God continue to bless you brothers in all that you do throughout the state!

Exemplifications

St. Mark's Council 12172 held a 1st degree on 19 September and brought in one new member into the Order.

Cory Newell - Grand Knight

State Secretary - Mike Townsend's Insight

Brothers,

The days between now and January first will be among the busiest of the year for many councils. Each council will be called upon to do many, many tasks. Councils will be providing coats to children without them, food to those who are in need, and fulfilling many tasks for their Priests and Parishes as well as the other charities they are involved with. These times will be busy but extremely fulfilling as well.

The State Secretary is responsible for many tasks throughout the year and I thought that it might be a good idea to provide each of you with a heads up on a few things are coming up in the future. It is my sincere hope that this knowledge will help each council prepare for the future.

During the month of October, the State Secretary is required to contract for the State Council liability insurance as well as Officers and Directors coverage. Last year, I was able to secure a D & O policy for which the rate will not increase for three years. This will allow the rate charged each council to remain the same this year. Those billing statements will be coming out in mid-October.

October is also one of the months that Supreme asks councils to conduct a membership drive. If your council has not conducted a drive this month, it is not too late. If you have any questions or need some help, please feel free to contact your District Deputy or District Mentor. They are there to help your council succeed. Remember the statewide goal of, “Every Council a Star Council”.

The annual state per capita billing will be coming out in January, along with the official notification of the State Convention and Credential forms for delegates and alternates. The per capita amount will not increase from previous years and must be paid to the State Council prior to the State Convention in April.

The 2016 Idaho State Convention will be held in Boise at the Red Lion Downtowner Hotel. The dates for the Convention will be April 15, 16 and 17. This year’s Convention will be hosted by St. Mark’s Council #12172 and I am sure will be an exciting time of fellowship for all. Please begin to make your plans for the Convention and Grand Knights should watch their mailboxes for complete information during the month of January.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your State Officers. We stand ready to help your council anyway we can.

God Bless and keep each of you close to his heart!!

Meridian Council #11548 Adopt-a-Highway Meridian Council stepped up to help our environment and local area participating in the Adopt-a-Highway cleanup project on Saturday, September 12th. Ten brother Knights, and families, met to clean up a stretch of Highway 20 / 26 - Chinden Blvd between Linder and Ten Mile in Meridian. We picked up 10 bags of trash while building relationships and brightening our community. Cory Newell - GK

Caldwell Council #3086 Here are 5 of the 7 New Brother Knights in Caldwell Council #3086. These Brother Knights are going to start a very exciting time for our Council. They are the leaders in the Hispanic Community at OLV and this will allow us to work closer together for one goal. Our participation in the Caldwell Night Rodeo was also a rewarding and enlightening experience for all of us who participated.

Caldwell Night Rodeo Brother Knights from Council #3086 furnished, cooked and served a Dinner to the Contestants before the Friday Night event. These contestants travel long hours and many miles from rodeo to rodeo. The 120 contestants we served Dinner too really appreciated the Dinner that the Council #3086 served. I (Darwin Schweitzer) had the opportunity to sit down and visit with some of the Bull Riders and Bronc Riders. Many of them have a tough life on the road and look forward to Rodeo's that are willing to help by serving this type of meal. Poster Contest

from Paul Petro, DD #5 Newsletter, 9-27-15

For the past two years, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has sponsored the “Keep Christ in Christmas” Poster Contest. This program allows children, ages 5-14, to engage their creative talents and imaginations while understanding the true meaning of Christmas. All councils are encouraged to take part in this program to get even more young people engaged in keeping Christ in Christmas and not just participating in the commercial aspect of the holiday. For more information and to order the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest Kit (#CPC-Kit) visit ...http://kofc.org/un/en/service/church/christmas/index. html, or call 203-752-4016.

It's all about Family Herb Maddock, PSD Brothers,

October is the kick-off month for our Family Program “Building the Domestic Church, The Family Fully Alive”. For those of you with the Supreme Program Guide or those using the Guide published each month in Columbia, this will be a reminder. It would be a great help if councils participating in the program as designed or in a modified version pass on details to me so that I can use that to help encourage other councils that might be struggling with implementing a Family Program.

The theme for October is about strengthening the relationships between our family’s generations. Suggestions include: Making a family tree complete with old photos, calling or visiting family members and praying for those that are deceased. Personally, my wife and I will be traveling to NC to visit our daughters’ families and participate in the Baptism of our new granddaughter.

The Psalm of the month is Psalm 105, and the suggested movie is “Up”.

A council program urging families to volunteer together in a project that will help other families is again a suggested event. Pick a Sunday to do food collection and give the proceeds to your local St Vincent de Paul pantry or another food bank. Promote early and be prepared for the results. This is an event that all family members can participate in and have a lot of fun doing it. Also Food for Families is a formal program run by Supreme and your council can benefit in other ways as well. Look online to find out more about that program.

Again, please let me know what your council is doing at ... [email protected]

Vivat Jesus.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I am taking a leap of faith and writing you today to ask for your congregation’s support for Special Olympics Idaho. We are currently experiencing a financial hardship due to increased costs of running a statewide program and a decrease in revenue, which has resulted in a major cash flow issue. We are a faith-filled people and trust that the Lord will provide what we need, and allow us to continue His good works, but we also know that there is power in numbers, and that is why we are reaching out to you. “For where two or three are gathered in My name, I am there among them.” Matthew 18:20.

As you may know, since 1971, Special Olympics Idaho has provided year round sports training and competition for Idaho children and adults with intellectual disabilities. On top of our sports program, we are the largest public health organization supporting people with intellectual disabilities. Also, we provide programming in schools across the state to build inclusive spaces for students with and without intellectual disability, which has decreased bullying and has created meaningful friendships where there has been isolation and loneliness. We are creating communities of inclusion and acceptance around our state. We recognize the value of every life and celebrate the champion within us all.

On a personal note, I support the mission of Special Olympics Idaho because I believe we are continuing the work of Christ in a community of people who are often neglected, rejected, and pushed aside to the margins of life. Special Olympics puts into daily practice the scripture, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). We accomplish this with the help of volunteers and supporters throughout the state of Idaho who have gifted us with their time, talents and resources because they too have been called to this mission, and see Christ in our athletes.

These are difficult times for nonprofits across the United States, and many have worthwhile missions to support. I am writing you today, primarily, to ask your congregation to remember the mission and work of Special Olympics Idaho in your prayers, together in worship and individually at home. We ask that your congregation prays for our leadership and our volunteers who give so much to this program, and we ask for believers to pray that our community, donors, and sponsors are moved to support this mission and aid us in continuing to provide programs that create real change in the lives of people with intellectual disability.

I have faith that we will overcome this difficult financial situation, but I know we cannot do it alone. If your congregation feels moved to “pass the plate” on our behalf or offer up a “love offering” for our Athletes, I believe the Lord will return it seven-fold in our program, and in the lives of those who are so moved to support the mission and calling of Special Olympics Idaho. If you have any questions, or would like a representative from Special Olympics Idaho to speak to your congregation about what we do, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Sincerely,

Laurie La Follette CEO

Star Council Updates

George Mesina - Membership Director Star Councils are keys to the growth and success of the Knights of Columbus. They are so important because they are growing their memberships, performing charitable actions in all 6 areas, insuring more knights, have a full slate of officers, and are current on their dues. These are healthy councils. All councils are challenged to go Star this year.

At this point, 25% of the way through the year, some councils have REALLY distinguished themselves. Two councils have reached their Star Council Membership quota, Boise Council 4012, and Salmon Council 8283. Outstanding! Besides those two, three more councils have surpassed 25% of their star quotas. These councils, Caldwell, Cottonwood, Fruitland and Nampa are on track for making their membership goal. Keep up the good work.

The entire order of the Knights of Columbus carries out October membership drives. This is a great opportunity for your council to progress rapidly toward Star Council. If you have not yet ordered a membership kit from Supreme, do so ASAP. I will continue to email helpful messages for your drives to Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries. If you need help with your membership drive, please contact your District Deputy, myself or anyone on the State Council. We’ll be glad to help.

The Last Word Kerry Hennessy Idaho State Deputy Worthy Knights of Columbus and Brothers all,

As I have been driving around the state of Idaho, for my regular full-time paying job, it is amazing to see the harvest progressing full speed ahead. The hard work of preparing and planting the fields this past spring, the care and feeding of the plants all summer that has yielded the desired bounty for the farmers. And now with the completion of the cycle, the gathering of the fruits of the fields, the labor that has been expended for another year that yields the bounty of the harvest to provide the profits for another year of planting.

I ask that you reflect on the bible reading from Matthew 25:14-30, where he gives us the story of the 3 servants entrusted with money from the master. The Idaho jurisdictions of all the Councils, all the committees, all the members, are asked to do the same thing as described in the parable. We are asked to take what is given to us by the master, and provide rewards for our members, our Parishes, communities, and our Priests. Reap the profits of a job well done in your Councils, DON’T be the servant who does nothing with what has been provided to you.

God Bless your work, and Pray for strong Councils. Vivat Jesus.

For decades the Pocatello-Chubbuck KC's have manned the stores looking for donations to the Tootsie Pop Disability Drive. This year's effort was Sept 25-26. Arnold Ortiz of Council 892

stands tall at Ridley's Grocery with a donor to the cause. Local charities supported are: Developmental Options; Special Olympics; Independence Home; and CW Hog (Cooperative

Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group).
