Title 1 Tidbit Tips for Success:

*Eat Together: Children who regularly eat meals with their families tend to do better in school and avoid risky behav-

ior. Eating dinner together is great, but other meals count too. Parents, if you work at night, try to make time for a family

breakfast. If it’s impossible to eat together during the week, try a picnic lunch on the weekend.

*Celebrate Progress: Suggest that your student creates a fun reminder of all the things he/she has accomplished. Cre-

ate a box, decorate it and label it “I Did It!” Then, your student can write each success on a slip of paper and put it in the

box. If your student is feeling discouraged, have them read their accomplishments from the slips in the box.

*Excellent Attendance: Being in school every day means your child won’t miss out on learning. Try to schedule appoint-

ments and family trips outside of school hours. If your kids ask to stay home “just because” remind them of what they’ll

miss, such as a reading group or PE class. Explain that students can be absent only if they are sick or if there is a family

emergency.

*Reminder: I will be available to talk with you about Title 1 services at Parent Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 6. Thank you! Emily Garrison-Lenz Maywood Public School Special Education and Title 1 Teacher [email protected]

Microsoft Office Specialist Word Certification

Congratulations to Stevie Handsaker for passing the MOS Word Certifi-cation exam. Certified individuals establish their ability to perform a num-ber of Word tasks, such as creating and managing documents, format-ting text, paragraphs and sections, creating tables and lists, applying ref-erences and inserting and formatting objects.

The straightforward Word evaluation challenges individuals to complete a comprehensive project that depicts real-world functionality with project and standards-based outcome testing.

An individual earning this certification has approximately 150 hours of instruction and hands-on experience with the product, has proven com-petency at an industry entry-level and is ready to enter into the job mar-ket. Stevie earned her certification in her Information Technology Busi-ness class.

Maywood High School Class of 2020 Senior Spotlight

Parker Johnston

Juan Baeza

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen? Don't make excuses for not doing homework, just get it done. Describe senioritis. Being mentally checked out of high school, but still physically being in high school. What has been the highlight of your senior year? Making the playoffs in football. Where do you imagine yourself 10 years from now? I see myself happy and out of high school as well as college. Who do you think is the most influential person in the United States? Why?

Donald J. Trump, as he is the leader of the free world. What is the one sacrifice you would not be willing to make, even if it meant solving all of the world’s problems? If I had to sacrifice my friends or family to save the world, I don't know that I could make that sacrifice. What is the most important quality in a friendship and why?

I feel that loyalty is the most important part of any relationship or friend-ship. What is one outrageous thing you desperately want to try before you die?

Bareback riding I am inspired by… My Grandpa Jim, because he is one of the strongest peo-ple I know, mentally, spiritually, and physically. Who is your hero and why? My Grandpa Jim, there are so many amazing

things he has done in his life, without him, I wouldn't be here, and finally, he is an outstanding person that I love with all of my heart.

What is the most creative excuse you've ever used to get out of a homework assign-ment? My best one I’ve used is “it’s in my pickup but my mom took it to work and all my stuff is in there that’s why I came empty handed to class.” What advice do you have for incoming freshmen? Your high school experience is like nothing you’ve experienced before because its the time where you become an adult, take advantage of it, have fun before you have to do adult things. What has been the highlight of your senior year? The highlight of my senior year so far is making the playoffs in Football because its one thing I’ve always wanted to accom-plish in my high school career Where do you imagine yourself 10 years from now? Hopefully, if all goes well I can become a travel welder and open up a welding shop. Which one memory will you remember forever about your time here? I will miss seeing my friends and miss all of our memories we had here at MHS. What is the worst thing about being a senior? I think the worst thing about being a senior is that after this year you will break away from your friends. What excuses do you give people when you don't want to go somewhere? I have to work.

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen? It’s like High School musical but with no singing and more drama. Describe senioritis. It’s like the last five minutes of A-team they seem to last forever and you’re just wanting to leave. What is one outrageous thing you desperately want to try before you die? Hang gliding If you could move anywhere in the world, where would you move and why? Scotland because their national ani-mal is a unicorn. What’s usually the first thought in your head when you wake up in the morning? I'm too tired for this. What excuses do you give people when you don’t want to go somewhere? My mom said I can’t go. I have to clean today. Who is your hero and why? My hero is my mom because no matter what life has given her she always stands tall.

Our Kindergarten through 5th Grade students have been learning from the Choose Love Curriculum. Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement™ is a nonprofit organization with a mission to create safer schools, lifespan social and emotional learning platform that not only teaches students the life skills that are essential to happi-ness and success, but also fosters a school culture that reduces violence from the inside out.

The program focuses on character development and Social and Emotional Learning that teaches educators and their students how to choose love in any circumstance through wonderfully simple yet powerful themes and practices for the classroom that naturally evolve into a culture where students feel safe, nurtured, connected, and empowered.

The Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy inspired expert educators to join together to create a social and emotional education program that incorporates the latest ad-vances in neuroscience, mindfulness, emotional intelligence and positive psycholo-gy to provide children the essential life skills that with help them succeed in school.

We have had a lot of fun learning these lessons in our classrooms. Brave breaths, gratitude, super hero poses and classroom constitutions have been a part of this inspiring curriculum.
