The late, really great Saturday Night Live icon, Gilda Radner, had this character: a clueless, egocentric New York reporter Roseanne Rosanadana, who, at the end of her addled rant, would explain it all away with, “Y’know, it’s always somethin’.” And there’s a lot of truth in this -- mergers and acquisitions and redundancies and layoffs and cutbacks and resignations and legal challenges and, well, somethin’, right? For those of us who would like to see the world in a nice, little, predictable, organized package, we set ourselves up for disappointment. We will always be met with challenges. Never has this been more true than just this year ... in the USA, in the UK, even here at 98 East Avenue. Some of you know that I devour motivational literature, in the hopes of combatting a nagging voice in my head ... “When this certain thing happens, then everything will be great ... just as I wanted it.” And when that thing doesn’t happen, my negative side can rear its ugly head, in the mistaken belief I should be (or am) happy all the time. (I wish it could be so, for all of us!) I take some inspiration in a couple noted writings: THE STATION, by Robert Hastings. It’s the ol’, “enjoy the journey” thing. The other is a best-seller, THE LAST LECTURE by Randy Pausch. This is the healthy-looking college prof who turned his terminal disease into an example and inspiration for the ages. He, too, encourages us to live each day to the fullest. I hope these writings can give a little boost as the world of TV spins furiously around us. I read them a constantly...just like breath, you need to keep taking it to live! And ya know what? In spite of it all - in our business, in our company and in the world - we still get to work in television! Everyone’s journey takes us to Cannes in a couple weeks, and CABLEready will be there! In fact, MIPCOM will mark the return of the CABLEready Party! We’re taking over the C21 lounge on Wednesday night - a great night to let your hair down, whether you have any or not! Hey! It’s Lico! For those of us who would like to see the world in a nice, little, predictable, organized package, we set ourselves up for disappointment. We will always be met with challenges. Never has this been more true than just this year ... in the USA, in the UK, even here at 98 East Avenue.
