Homecoming 2013 was a true celebration of community at Westlake High.

Special needs students Jacob Cox and Holly Thomas were named King and Queen before the football game against North Olmsted Sept. 20

The stadium crowd erupted in an explosion of green and white pride as Holly donned a tiara and Jacob was topped with his crown.

The message of compassion was felt deeply by those involved day in and day out with Westlake Schools and the Down syndrome students who were honored.

“This idea came from our students. I am just so proud of them,” said West-lake High Principal Tim Freeman.

“I am beyond blessed,” said Jacob’s mom to a TV reporter. “These kids at Westlake High School are awesome and they are won-derful, caring kids.”

Jacob and Holly were nominated to the Home-coming Court by a vote of the student body - two of just six seniors who are honored.

The excitement built

as Jacob and Holly took part in traditional Rose Arch ceremonies that took place in the school gym Friday afternoon. Enthusi-asm exploded as the royal couple were announced at the game.

Before the afternoon assembly, media inter-viewed Jacob and Holly, and also student peers who team with Down Syndrome and other special needs stu-dents during every school day.

“I think I am the one who learns more from her,”

said sophomore peer Gina Vanderver of her relation-ship with Holly.

Like the other stu-dents who volunteer in the peer program, Gina spends study hall and gym time with special needs students. No class time is taken, even though it is the life lessons that come through loud and clear.

“I wish I could be more like her, she is so loving, so easy-going. She is my best friend,” added Gina.

For Holly’s mom, Lori Thomas, the message of care resonates deeply.

“As a parent of a spe-cial needs student, one of the things I worried about from the time Holly was born was being accepted by her peers,” she said. “To see this love and acceptance is beyond words.”

“We appreciate all the peers that help out both in our classroom and in the community. I am so fortu-nate to work for a school district that prides itself

on acceptance of students with disabilities. We are so proud of Jacob and Holly,” said their teacher, WHS In-tervention Specialist Katie McGlynn.

Westlake Homecoming 2013 will also be remem-bered for more than this year’s extraordinary home-coming ceremony.

The new Westlake High School was dedicated Saturday morning. Jacob and Holly cut the ribbon.

Then the football team staged a stirring comeback to defeat North Olmsted, 29-28, Saturday afternoon to complete Friday’s storm delayed game.

Whatever the future holds for the new WHS and the students that pass through its halls, one thing is certain:

Westlake Homecom-ing 2013 will always be re-membered for its very spe-cial king and queen and the time Westlake High taught the world how to celebrate the power of community.

It’s a great time of year if you are a sports fan. We’ve got the Cleveland Indians and the Browns to watch, and the Cavaliers preparing for their pre-season. We’ve got it all going together, so let’s get out there and root for our teams.

Since we are on the topic of sports, nearly every school, starting from early elementary all the way up through college, is well into their season of sports as well. We tell patients of ours to wear some kind of protective device to protect their teeth. As is human na-ture, people generally think that nothing will ever hap-pen to them. Injuries to the mouth are so common in all kinds of sporting activi-ties. Certainly when you

are talking about a sport like football or hockey, a mouth guard is really, really essen-tial. Over the years that I have practiced dentistry, it is so sad to see a young man or woman, who has never had a cavity in their life, all of a sudden come in with two broken front teeth that may now need root canals and crowns and will now require a lifetime worth of dentistry.

Wearing a mouth guard is not just for kids any more as people are liv-ing longer and are healthi-er. Lots of people at my age and older certainly are en-gaging in all kinds of sports, including racquetball, ten-nis, rugby, and everything else that is out there. I have

seen people get elbowed in the mouth and break off teeth playing racquetball or bas-ketball, so it’s not just the real rough sports where people should consider wearing a mouth guard.

The other kind of mouth guard that is used very often is for people who grind their teeth. Approxi-mately 1/3 of the popula-tion grind their teeth in one form or another. If you are one of those with chipped teeth, easily broken fill-ings, caps or crowns that keep coming off, there is a good chance that you are a grinder. Mouth guards are

commonly used in these in-stances as well.

Your teeth are one of your best investments, so it really pays to protect them whenever you are doing any kind of aggressive ac-tivity. We are happy to of-fer you a free consultation to see if you need some kind of mouth guard or if you have any other dental needs. Please feel free to contact us at 440-892-1810. We are here to help you smile.

One of the challenges facing Citizens for West-lake Schools in this fall’s levy campaign comes from an anonymous group called EducateWestlake.org.

Citizens for Westlake Schools is a community group supporting Issue 88, the 5.4-mill operating levy for Westlake City Schools on the Nov. 5 ballot. Cris Kennedy is campaign chair and the group lists 36 com-munity members on its leadership team.

EducateWestlake.org remains anonymous and has declined to identify leaders or members.

In a Levy Forum held at Westlake Porter Library two weeks ago, Citizens

Westlake School Levy: Setting the Record Straightfor Westlake Schools, rep-resented by Kennedy and Westlake Supt. of Schools Dr. Daniel Keenan, offered a point by point refutation of anonymous claims about Westlake Schools.

Citizens for Westlake Schools has posted the document at its website, WestlakeLevy.com, un-der the heading, “Westlake City School Facts: Setting the Record Straight.” The document addresses many of the shoot-from-the-hip claims levy opposition has mustered.

Just who is EducateW-estlake? An email to the EducateWestlake website sidestepped a request from The Villager Newspaper

for leadership and mem-bership identity.

“Thanks (sic) you for your comments related to EducateWestlake.org,” was the reply. “As stated on the homepage Educate West-lake Inc., believes that all citizens have the right to receive full & transparent information related to pub-lic education and their tax dollars. EducateWestlake is dedicated to providing the citizens of Westlake a con-venient location and easy access to this school district information. We are sup-ported by a broad cross-

section of Westlake tax-payers, parents, and other community members.

“To answer your ques-tion directly, EducateWest-lake does not have a formal leadership group or direct membership. Information highlighted on the website is obtained through sources like The Ohio Department of Education, The State of Ohio Treasurer’s Office, The Westlake School Dis-trict, etc… Additional in-formation is derived from the comment section lo-cated on our homepage…..”- by Bob Tuneberg

SHOULD YOU GET A PSA TEST?

Healthy men under the age of 55 do not need routine annual prostate cancer screenings, according to new clinical practice guidelines released by the American Urological Association. The agency, which USA Today reporter Liz Szabo said “staunchly defended” prostate-specific antigen screenings in recent years, has now declared the tests are “not recommended” for anyone under the age of 40, for average-risk men between the ages of 40 and 54, and for anyone over age 70.

It was a special day for the faithful at St. Mary of the Woods last week as the touring statue of Our Lady of Fatima made a stop at the senior living facility in Avon.

An international symbol of peace, the statue scheduled a stop at St. Mary of Woods while touring the Cleveland area through Sept. 21. Life Enrichment Director Robin Hanna was on hand to welcome guests and said it was an honor to host the statue at St. Mary of the Woods for a noontime Mass. Many residents and guests stopped in for wor-ship and made hand-written appeals for peace and healing that were placed near the statue’s base. The Pilgrim Statue is known to have brought miracles to wor-shippers.

Our Lady of Fatima at St. Mary of the Woods

The statue was created in 1947 by Jose Thedim in accordance with an image of the Virgin Mary who was seen by three chil-dren in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The children said the vision carried a message from Mary, who encour-aged atonement for sins and prayer for world peace.

Community West Foundation, the west shore’s leader in philanthropy, reports that it distributed $3,264,000 in grants to 41 nonprofit organizations through the Foundation over the past year - helping feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and care for the sick and suffering. The announcement came at the Community West Foundation annual meeting, held Sept. 11 at the Cleveland Marriott. Nearly 200 guests from the philanthropic, non-profit, and business community attended. News of the Foundation’s generosity was shared by Board Chair William W. Baker. “In our work, we see that there are far too many people for whom homelessness, hunger, poverty, and indignity are the day to day experience,” said David T. Dombrowiak, Community West Founda-tion President and CEO. Nearly 90 per cent of the Foundation’s grantmak-ing is to agencies that support and meet the needs of marginalized communities. The other 10% is devoted to direct advocacy, particularly for those affected by mental health issues. The Foundation’s continuing contribution to

positive social change through its grant-making and collaboration was a perfect tie in to the keynote ad-dress by Christine Reeves, Senior Field Associate and nationally-known speaker for the National Commit-tee for Responsive Philanthropy. Christine’s presentation, “Navigating the Phil-anthropic Landscape: Nationwide and in Ohio,” emphasized that foundations must give general op-erating support and multi-year funding grants that explicitly benefit underserved communities and funding for social justice strategies. Her remarks were enthusiastically received. Reeves responded with a wonderful blog following her visit, saying she was “terribly impressed with the Community West Foundation, as well as their dedi-cated staff and board. “The Community West Foundation is doing tre-mendous work as both a grantmaker and foundation dedicated to building strong, trustworthy partnerships with their nonprofit partners and communities. “I am excited to see all the great work they will continue doing in the future.” Further comments from Dombrowiak underscore

the impact of the Foundation’s work on the West Side community. “CWF distributed $6,138,000 in grant funding over the past year including $3,264,000 to support commu-nity organizations. Our grants have resulted in: - 1,720,000 Meals for the hungry, - 610,000 Nights of shelter for the homeless, - 570,000 Instances of medical and mental health care, - 56,000 Days of education and recreation for the disabled, - 34,000 Showers and other basic needs for the homeless, - 365 Days of compassionate care for the dying for the eighth consecutive year. “We continue to support and to speak up on be-half of those who need it most - the vulnerable, for-gotten, and disenfranchised, concluded Dombrowiak. “We will always stand as a voice for those who have lost theirs and attempt to provide social justice through our grantmaking to our community.” Visit www.communitywestfoundation.org to learn more on ways you can be part of this important work.

Letters to the EditorSupport Westlake Schools

To the Editor:The Westlake School Levy didn’t lose in May because

of those with political motives, and others with well-inten-tioned reasons, voting against it. It lost because not enough people who were for it – for education, our children, our community, and our property values – did not take the time to vote for it.

Sadly, it lost to complacency. Ironically, the great suc-cess of our schools and our pride in them as residents led too many to believe the levy could not fail - that it did not need their vote. They assumed a levy, needed to maintain and improve a great school system, could not fail, leaving it to others to vote for it. How obviously wrong they were. Now, with issue 88 on the ballot in November, we have the opportunity to right this wrong by voting - and by getting out the votes for it. It’s not enough to simply be for some-thing, we have to make it happen.

We have to make it happen this time – vote! Vote for Issue 88!
