ACADEMICS

Curriculum Focus

The students of Fall Creek Junior High participate in the state mandated middle school curriculum. We believe that regardless of their post-secondary goals, students who leave FCJH should be prepared for the rigor and challenge of high school course work and beyond. With this as our benchmark, we believe we are preparing our students for success. Scheduling and Schedule Changes

Schedule changes may be made through June 1st of the current school year. After this date, changes will be made only due to special circumstances. Students and parents should carefully consider all course requests prior to the upcoming school year. Students leaving for summer vacation should consider course requests made at the time of scheduling as final. Requests for specific teachers will not be honored. Schedule changes after June 1st will be administratively granted under the following circumstances:

- Administrative error in scheduling (i.e. original student requests were not entered correctly)

- Need to balance class size - Documented physical or mental condition requires a modification in the

schedule - Special Education consideration - Student is academically misplaced in the course (has not completed pre-

requisites, new enrollee misplaced) - Student wishes to increase the academic rigor of his or her schedule - Principal discretion - Students interested in being an Office or Library aide will need to complete

the required form by May 1st of the current school year. Students must have no grade lower than a B+. Space is limited.

Advanced Courses

Courses at the Advanced/Honors level are offered in the disciplines of Mathematics, Science, and English. A World Language course is offered in 8th grade only. These courses are advanced in course material, pace and rigor. Students must meet the criteria for enrollment in advanced courses as well as receive teacher recommendations for enrollment in the courses.

High School Courses in Junior High

The curriculum at Hamilton Southeastern is rich with various opportunities for advancement. Students who seek rigorous academic challenges may find that they can excel at advanced courses and successfully accomplish high school coursework while in junior high. The advanced courses have been designed to meet the needs of students who have evidenced high aptitude and maturity while in earlier grades. 1. Honors Algebra I - for students who successfully complete* 8th grade math prior to 7th or 8th grade.

2. Honors Geometry - for students who successfully complete* Honors Algebra I.

3. World Language – for students who are interested in exploring French, German, or Spanish. *Successful completion in junior high math and science accelerated courses is defined as earning a B- or above.

Earning High School Credit toward Diploma 1. High school honors courses taken in junior high will be counted in the high school grade point average as a weighted credit.

2. If the student earns a grade of C- or higher in the course, high school courses taken in junior high will count toward Academic Honors Diploma credit requirements.

3. Biology I/Honors Biology I is a required course for high school graduation and must appear on the high school transcript.

Procedural Considerations 1. Students who are not successful in an accelerated course placement may be moved to an alternative course. This may involve repeating a 7th or 8th grade level course.

2. With the exception of World Language, students with a “B” or lower on a high school course in junior high may retake the course or semester as a 9th grader. Retakes are permitted for World Language grades of “C-” or lower, or the student can take Level I of a different language in high school.

3. Except for Honors Biology I, a course taken in junior high can be removed from high school transcripts if the request is made before the end of 11th grade.

4. Consistent with high school procedures, a student will be allowed to retake within two semesters of the previously taken course. The grade the student is assigned when repeating the course will replace the first grade earned and will become part of the student’s GPA.

Grading

Fall Creek Junior High is on a nine-week grading system with midterm grades issued at 4 ½ weeks and report cards issued at the end of each 9 weeks. Parents and students may access midterms and report cards on Skyward. Students who achieve all A’s on their report card will receive High Honor Roll status. Students who achieve all A’s and B’s on their report card will receive Honor Roll status. The grading scale used at FCJH is the corporation-wide grading scale.

ATHLETICS/EXTRACURRICULAR

Extracurricular/Athletic Opportunities

Participation in the athletic and extracurricular programs at FCJH is encouraged. These programs provide our students the opportunity to provide leisure time activities, to promote personal physical development, to gain leadership experience, to receive intensified educational experiences, and to have fun with fellow students and teachers. Students wishing to participate in athletics must have a physical examination and have an IHSAA physical form completed and on file with the Athletic Director prior to their first practice.

Athletic/Extracurricular Eligibility Policy

A student who receives 2 F’s for the nine-week grading period is ineligible for the current season and for the next grading period. Students will also become ineligible immediately with 2 F’s on their mid-term report during the season until that mid-term grade is at a passing level.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BUSINESS

Business Information Technology This semester course will enable students to develop and enhance their touch-typing skills on the computer keyboard. Skills that will be introduced may include, but are not limited to, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Office 2013. This course will also help students develop knowledge and skills for money management, spending and credit, saving and investing, as well as basic business concepts. Students will also learn about, and prepare for, college careers. This semester course is required for 7th grade.

ENGLISH

Composition 7

This course will focus on the skills necessary to effectively communicate ideas in writing in a grammatically correct manner. Students will conduct research for both research and argument papers, write essays and narratives, and work both independently and collaboratively with their peers. Students will also participate in at least one oral presentation. Students will learn to improve their organization, grammar, sentence fluency and writing methods. This is a one-

semester course.

Composition 8

This course will build upon the skills students learned in Composition 7 to further improve writing quality and prepare students for high school level writing assignments. Students will conduct research for both research and argument papers, write essays and narratives, and work both independently and collaboratively with their peers. Students will also participate in at least one oral presentation. Students will learn to improve their organization, grammar, sentence fluency and writing methods. Students enrolled in Honors Prep World

Language will not take Composition. This is a one-semester course.

English 7 The course of English 7 consists of an in-depth analysis of grammar, writing, literature, speaking, and listening. Students read works of literature that encompass all genres, including but not limited to novels, poetry, fables, legends, and nonfiction. Students use writing, listening, and verbal communication skills in order to become better speakers and writers. Students learn how the English language, writing, and grammar affect every part of their daily lives. Students participate in student and group-led discussions, write literary responses, give speeches and presentations, and use creative writing to write their own creative stories. Students use hands-on experiences and HSE 21 skills to make cross-curricular connections through reading, writing, and speaking. Advanced English 7

The course of Advanced English 7 consists of an in-depth analysis of grammar, writing, literature, speaking, and listening. A wide range of texts, including many that are above grade level, will be used to teach higher-level thinking and concepts, but in Advanced English 7, a greater emphasis will be placed on critical thinking skills, higher level questions and literary analysis. There is an expectation that students will be asked to go above grade level when appropriate. The rigor of the course will be in the relevancy of the tests and the differentiation of instruction implemented by the teacher. Placement is by teacher recommendation.

English 8

The major areas studied in English 8 are literature, writing, and oral communication. Grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary are integrated throughout the course in all areas. Students will delve into the world of poetry, novels, short stories, non-fiction, inquiry based research, and drama. Students will participate in persuasion, literary analysis, drama, historical fiction studies, oral presentations, essays, creative writing, reader response, research projects and long-term independent reading projects. Writing standards are stressed more heavily in 8th grade English. Students use hands-on experiences and HSE 21 skills to make cross-curricular connections through reading, writing, and speaking.

Advanced English 8 The Pre-AP handbook will be used extensively at the high school level and some of its content is expected to be mastered while in junior high. This includes, but is not limited to numerous literary devices (irony, tone, mood, figurative language, theme, point of view) and certain AP skills such as how to mark a text. A wide range of texts, including many that are above grade level, will be used to teach these concepts. Students will delve into the world of poetry, novels, short stories, non-fiction, inquiry based research, and drama, but in Advanced English 8, a greater emphasis will be placed on critical thinking skills, higher level questions and literary analysis. Students use hand-on experiences and HSE 21 skills to make cross-curricular connections through reading, writing, and speaking. There is an expectation that students will be asked to go above grade level when appropriate. FINE ARTS

Art Art 7: Students will have the opportunity to create both two and three dimensional art projects. They will explore drawing and painting as well as printmaking, clay, papier-mâché and other media. Experiences with web quests, digital photography and learning about and discussing the work of professional artists will also be part of this class. Sketchbook assignments will be used to supplement art projects. Art 7 is a year-long class.

Art 8: Students will have the opportunity to work with painting and drawing, as well as plaster cast masks and sculpture, clay sculpting, using the potter’s wheel, printmaking and other creative experiences. Students will also learn about a variety of artists and their art. Sketchbook assignments will be used to supplement art projects. Art 8 is a year-long class.

Art Survey: Students will create both two and three dimensional projects. Drawing, painting and papier-mâché are some of the media explored. Art Survey is a nine-week course for 7th graders opting to take the FACS elective and for 8th graders choosing band, choir or orchestra. Art Survey is a semester class for 8th graders electing to take the Tech Ed option.

Band

Symphonic Band: Symphonic Band is for advanced 7th and 8th grade band students who display leadership qualities through practice habits, playing skill, and daily class work ethic. Performances include Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts as well as band contest and solo and ensemble contest. Students from this band may audition for extra-curricular groups such as Pep Band and Jazz Band. The intermediate and junior high school directors select membership. This is a year-

long elective that may not be changed at semester. Please refer to the schedule change request procedure.

Concert Band & Varsity Band: Concert & Varsity Band are intermediate level groups for 7th and 8th grade students. Performances include Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts as well as band contest and solo and ensemble contest. Students from this band may audition for extra –curricular groups such as Pep Band and Jazz Band. This group provides leadership opportunities for players at an intermediate level. The intermediate and junior high school directors select

membership. This is a year-long elective that may not be changed at semester. Please refer to the schedule change request procedure.

Beginning Band: Beginning Band is offered to 7th and 8th graders who want to learn to play an instrument. Students will perform at the Winter and Spring Concerts. Participation in beginning band will require the rental of an instrument. Students will be fitted to an instrument within the first few weeks of school. Once an instrument has been selected, it will be the responsibility of the parents and students to obtain an instrument. Information regarding instrument rental will be handed out at the start of the school year. 8th Grade students enrolled in band, will have nine weeks of Art Survey. Band classes meet daily. All students are welcome to

Beginning Band. No prior experience is necessary!! This is a year-long elective that may not be changed at semester. Please refer to the schedule change request procedure.

Choir

Choir 7: You can be a beginner or a veteran singer! No experience necessary. Music of various styles and cultures will be learned and performed. Professional choreographers will teach dances to some songs and there will be some music without movement. Students will study solfege and music theory to assist them in vocal technique and reading music. There are 4 mandatory, evening concerts as well as some optional performances such as singing the National Anthem at school basketball games. All students are welcome in choir! This is a year-long

elective that may not be changed at semester. Please refer to the schedule change request procedure.

Choir 8: Eighth grade choir opportunities typically include an Honors Girls Chorus and an Honors Mixed Chorus. These groups are typically made up of veteran singers who took choir in 7th grade but can also include new singers with a desire to learn! There are 4 required evening performances for all performing choirs as well as ISSMA large group contest, and opportunities to sing the National Anthem at athletic events as well as participate in events with HSE High School Choirs! In this course, students will explore the basics of music theory and history through the means of hands-on experiences with keyboards, hand chimes, Ukuleles, and rhythm instruments. General Music is a nine-week course for 7th graders

electing the FACS option and for 8th graders choosing Art 8. General Music is a semester course for 8th graders electing the Tech Ed option.

Orchestra Chamber Orchestra: This orchestra class is open to 7th and 8th grade students who have had at least one year of study on a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass) and display qualities of musicianship and leadership to participate in an advanced junior high orchestra. Performances in fall, winter and spring will take place along with opportunities for extra-curricular string playing throughout the year. The intermediate and junior high orchestra directors will select students for

membership in this class. This is a year-long elective that may not be changed at semester. Please refer to the schedule change request procedure.

MATH

Math 7

The seventh grade math class prepares students for their final year of pre-algebra study. The curriculum includes, but is not limited to, the following: - Operations of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers

- Applications of each set of numbers, using problem solving strategies

- Number theory

- Algebraic expressions and equations

- Geometric definitions and concepts

- Uses of measurements of plane and solid geometric figures

- Percents and their applications

- Statistics and graphs

- Probability

- Coordinate graphing and equations in two variables

Advanced Math 7

This advanced math class prepares students to take high school Algebra I in eighth grade. The curriculum consists of the topics listed below: Placement is based on grades and teacher recommendation.

- Algebraic concepts - Trigonometric ratios - Graphing algebraic equations - Percents and their applications - Geometric definitions and concepts - Uses of measurements of plane and solid geometric figures - Probability and Statistics - Square roots, Pythagorean Theorem - Solving equations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers

Math 8

The eighth grade math class prepares students to take Algebra I in their freshman year. The curriculum consists of the topics listed below: - Patterns and measurements in Geometry

- Algebraic concepts

- Problem solving

- Real numbers (rational and irrational)

- Probability and statistics

- Coordinate graphing

- Solving equations and inequalities

- Percents and applications

- Number Theory

Honors Algebra I

This is a high school Honors Algebra course. After successful completion of this course, students will go into Honors Geometry as freshmen and should plan on taking math all four years of high school. This is a rigorous class, recommended only for students who have been successful in Advanced Math 7. The curriculum topics are the same as for Algebra I, but are covered more in depth and at a faster pace. Students will receive high school credit upon completion of Honors Algebra I.

Placement is based on grades and teacher recommendation.

Honors Geometry – 8th Grade

This course covers primarily plane geometry with some solid geometry topics. It includes deductive and inductive reasoning; the ideas of proof and logic are stressed. Properties and relationships of geometric figures including the study of angles, lines, planes, triangles, parallel lines, circles, coordinate geometry, trigonometric ratios, polygons, and special drawings are all included. Students will

receive high school credit upon completion of Honors Geometry in 8th grade. Placement is based on grades and teacher recommendation.

PRACTICAL ARTS

Family and Consumer Science

Topics include Kitchen safety, food safety, Food preparation skills - 8 Foods labs, Nutrition, Food guidelines, Child Development - Babysitting, Basic sewing skills and Clothing care - Laundry. This class uses wheat, dairy and egg ingredients. This is a semester class taken by 7th-8th graders not enrolled in 7th grade full year art, band, choir or orchestra. 8th graders who took band, orchestra, choir or art as a 7th grader may request this course as a semester elective.

Technology Education

Tech Ed studies the following technological systems: transportation, manufacturing, construction and communications systems. Major projects include a balsa wood tower, a transportation vehicle, design challenges, architecture, and coding. The materials utilized in the lab include wood, plastic, and spray and brush paints. This is a semester class for 8th graders choosing the Tech Ed

Option. Eighth graders who choose a fine arts elective will have nine weeks of Tech Ed.

Digital Media Digital Media is a hands-on course designed to educate students about the ever-changing digital world. Students will study and participate in pre-production planning, writing and script editing; on-camera appearance; post-production editing of projects; and presentation of these projects. Students are expected to create and produce original video projects which examine specific genres (short documentaries, interview, sports, school activities, and entertainment). Students will understand and effectively use pre-production techniques such as storyboards, shot lists, script writing, presentation of project proposals, and creation of schedules. Students will learn to use iPads to film and effectively communicate an idea and tell a story. Other topics of study may include website production, photography, graphic production, audio production and computer applications. Digital Media is a semester long course.

SCIENCE

Science 7

Topics covered include cells, the scientific method, what is a Scientist? and environmental science. An in-depth study of plants and animals is also covered as well as how these fit into different biomes. Students will be studying the different concepts in a lab setting which will help to develop their scientific thought. A special opportunity is offered in attending a three-day, two-night camp near Lafayette, Indiana. Under the direction of teachers and camp counselors, students complete a wide assortment of environmental and ecological activities. The Camp Tecumseh experience occurs in October.

Advanced Science 7

Topics covered include cells, the scientific method, what is a Scientist? and environmental science. An in-depth study of plants and animals is also covered as well as how these fit into different biomes. This class will require students to be an independent thinker, be able to handle a faster pace setting, and be able to utilize higher thinking skills while studying each topic. During the Advanced course, students will also be required to complete a long term independent study project utilizing the skills of a scientist. Students in this course will also participate in the Camp Tecumseh experience in October. Placement is based on

grades and teacher recommendation.

Science 8

Students will gain a better understanding of the different concepts involving chemistry and physics through a hands-on approach. Major projects include the egg-drop project, the Rube Goldberg project, an element database project, an element brochure, and a formula spreadsheet project.

A student in this class should have a strong interest in science, be willing to work daily in preparation for the next day, be a critical thinker in the science world, be able to apply concepts and skills being taught, and utilize higher level thinking skills while acquiring knowledge. During the Advanced course, students will also be required to complete a long term independent study project utilizing the skills of a scientist. Placement is based on grades and teacher recommendation.

SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies 7

Seventh grade social studies will explore the Eastern World from ancient to modern times. Major civilizations and historical events (e.g. Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, South Africa, colonization) are studied through a wide variety of means to include, but not limited to, lectures, group and individual projects. Map skills, historical literature analysis, and writing skills are also implemented.

Social Studies 8

Eighth grade social studies will focus on United States history from the original inhabitants of North America through the reconstruction of the South after the civil war. As we chronologically work our way through history, we pause to look a little more in depth at our Constitution and election process. Geography is incorporated throughout the year. Social Studies 8 – We the People The primary goal of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program is to promote civic competence and responsibility among Indiana’s middle school students. The program includes: A full year Social Studies course different from the 8th Grade US History course. We the People will cover historical perspectives but it is primarily focused on improving students’ understanding of the institutions of American Constitutional democracy and discovering the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Also, culminating activity of a simulated congressional hearing in which students “testify” before a panel of judges. Students will complete in the state level competition against other Junior High and Middle schools. Due to the culminating activity, the section of 8th

grade We the People will be limited to 25 students. A student must have a recommendation from their 7th grade Social Studies and English instructor. Additionally, a student must have earned a C or higher in each class for the 7th grade school year. Students must have passed the English Language Arts and Math ISTEP tests and have a proficient reading score from the 7th grade NWEA testing. Students will submit a written application to the We the People teacher and the (SS dept. chair) for review and final selection of the class roster.

WELLNESS Wellness 7 and 8

This course will improve the health of the whole person – physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Wellness will cover units on consumer health, personal wellness, growth and development, the body systems, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and AIDS prevention. Wellness lessons will also include abstinence and substance abuse. Wellness is a yearlong class.

WORLD LANGUAGE World Language – 8th Grade

All students will have a choice between French, German and Spanish. We offer this as a Regular World Language or Advanced World Language. This course will be taught and graded as a high school world language course, and is intended for students who intend to study five years of World Language prior to graduation. Students will focus on the four skills – reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will identify and learn various parts of speech in the target language. Successful completion of world language classes in 8th grade qualifies the student for the next level of their chosen language in 9th grade. Students will receive high school credit upon completion of the World Language class taken in 8th grade. In order to be eligible for Advanced World Language in 8th grade, students in Advanced 7th grade English must achieve a B or better in both semesters of their English Class. Students in regular English 7 must achieve a B+ or better in both semesters of their English class. Students must also achieve a B or better in Composition 7 as well as pass the English portion of ISTEP.
