LEARN TO SWIM AT THE Y.Facts About Swimming & YMCA Swim Programs

stay active, be healthy and have fun together or by themselves.

Ys offer swim lessons (for all ages), family swim, competitive swimming and diving teams, and many kinds of adaptive swim programs to meet the diverse and unique needs of children and adults.

The Y is the largest operator of swimming pools in the United States, with more than 2,200 pools.

Today, tens of millions of people across the United States have learned how to swim at the YMCA, including Olympic Gold Medalists Cullen Jones and Ian Crocker, as well as former President Ronald Reagan.

Nearly 70 percent of YMCAs offer various aquatics programming that can include: lifeguard programs, swim lessons, synchronized swimming, skin diving/snorkeling, boating safety, water exercise and the YMCA's SPLASH program, which teaches swimming and water safety skills to children in underserved communities.

The Y is committed to water safety and uses a comprehensive, rigorous training program to prepare lifeguards to be vigilant and effectively guard pools, lakes or waterparks. YMCAs believe strongly in ongoing training and

instruction for their lifeguards

Interview with Elissa Frazier, mother of two autistic boys in buddy swim lessons

Ethan is empathetic, funny, and analytical. Levi is energetic, sensitive and musical.

Ethan has been taking swimming lessons since he was three years old. Levi has been in swimming since about eighteen months. We did the mommy and me classes.

What was the leading cause for bring the boys to swimming? I brought the boys swimming for different reasons. We wanted to take the boys on vacations and allow them the opportunity to enjoy pools and summertime water activities. I wanted Ethan to eventually swim within a team because he struggled with positive appropriate social interactions in pre-k because of his autism. When he took occupational therapy we realized that activities that forced him to focus were self-esteem boosters as well, climbing walls or walking on the balance beam – as examples. We also wanted Levi, who is hyperactive to have an outlet for his energy and to work on his focus.

Why did you choose the Y for swim lessons?

Ethan is autistic and is on the higher end of the spectrum in terms of ability to verbalize his needs and wants and to regulate his emotional responses. He has melt downs; but they are not as often or not as severe as they had been. We have taught Ethan to communicate with us before he inconsolable. Levi has a mild cognitive delay, ADHD, and

working on two-way conversations with him and 20-30 minutes of focused activities like reading. Levi loves music and is exceptionally agile. If we can mix his learning with singing and dancing, he does quite well.

South Side YMCA 2015 FALL SESSION

At the Y we are more than a gym. We are a cause dedicated to building strong children, families and communities – inside and out. This includes making our programs available to all regardless of need – because at the Y, everyone belongs. You can help us in the cause. Change a life by making a gift to the YMCA. Because membership dues and program fees support our daily operations, your gift will go directly to serving children and families in need. The impact of your gift will be felt when:• A kindergartner starts school ready to

learn because he attended the Y’s early learning center.

• Kids have a safe, nurturing environment to go to after school and in the summer.

• A child learns to swim – a critical life lesson for all.

• A family is able to spend quality time together while focusing on staying active and healthy.

• A child loses weight – and enjoys it –because at the Y, exercise is play.

MAKE A GIFT. CHANGE A LIFE. Make your gift today at donate.ymcachicago.org.
