CAFÉ Flutes

CAFE (Central Arizona Flute Ensemble) is a seven-

member flute choir that specializes in performances for

audiences in all types of senior communities. Playing

instruments that range from the traditional piccolo to the

distinctive 10-foot long contrabass flute, CAFE

musicians produce a spectrum of textures and styles that surprise and enthrall audiences.

A past audience member commented, “Who needs an orchestra when you can enjoy the CAFE flute

choir? This is so amazing. I came here thinking, 'uh….I’ll listen to a few flutes.' Little did I know

how interesting and amazing this performance would be!”

You can look forward to hearing creative arrangements of familiar melodies along with a few new

pieces to enjoy. In

interesting trivia about

the music and composers,

the musicians will host a

question/answer session,

then invite audience

members to pose for a

photo with the gigantic

contrabass flute, flutists,

and instruments.

Friday October 2 2015 7pm 4/2/1 (4 Hands 2 Hearts 1 Piano) Dian Baker and Eckart Sellheim, 4 Hands/2 Hearts/

1 Piano (4/2/1), have concertized together since 1998 in

the United States and Europe. Their many years of inter-

national performing and collaboration merge in the per-

fect medium -- the piano duo. Baker and Sellheim feel

equally at home with mainstream repertoire, music “off-

the-beaten-path”, and contemporary works for piano four-

hands.

4/2/1 has performed the complete four-hand works of

Franz Schubert on a variety of pianos and fortepianos.

These compositions, along with the complete works of

Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bartholdy, Schumann, Brahms, and Debussy, for the core of their extensive rep-

ertoire. In performances of 18th and early 19th century music, the Duo frequently features fortepianos

from their own collection.

Recent highlights of 4/2/1’s multifaceted activities include a recital on Clara Schumann’s 1827

fortepiano at the Schumannhause in Zwickau, Germany with a live recording of this concert published

on the Figaro label; a performance in 2013 at the Arizona Bach Festival featuring J.S. Bach’s Bran-

denburg Concertos transcribed by Max Reger; and a first-ever recording of four-hand works by late-

Romantic German composer Carl Reinecke, co-produced with Westdeutscher Rundfunk,

Cologne, and released in 2011 on the ARS label to high critical acclaim. Free will offering.

Sunday October 18 2015 2pm Lake/Crissman guitar duo Jonathan Crissman has earned degrees from

Houghton College, Slippery Rock Universi-

ty, the University of Akron, and Arizona

State University. Connecting with audiences

across the globe, Dr. Crissman has given

concerts throughout the United States, as

well as the UK, Ireland, the Czech Republic,

Germany, Italy, India, Mexico, Canada, and

South Korea. Currently based in the Phoenix

Valley, he has performed as both soloist and

in ensemble at many of Phoenix’s notable

venues, including the Phoenix Art Museum, Tempe Center for the Arts, Scottsdale Center for the Per-

forming Arts, and the Musical Instrument Museum. Dr. Crissman currently serves as a faculty associate

at Arizona State University, an adjunct professor at both Grand Canyon University and GateWay Com-

munity College, and a teacher for the nonprofit Lead Guitar.

The guitarists Brendan Lake and Jonathan Crissman are both protégés of the internationally renowned

guitar pedagogue, Frank Koonce. The duo will add to this performance with a virtuosic collage of Span-

ish works from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries by Rodrigo, Granados, Soler, and others.

Sunday November 15, 2015 2pm Michelle Rice, Mezzo-soprano/Kerry Jennings, Tenor with Andria Fennig, Piano

We are a tenor and mezzo-soprano duo dedicated to performing musically-

engaging and dramatic 20th-21st Century repertoire by both living and non-

living composers. Our performance is greatly enhanced, and comes to the-

atrical “life” through the addition of staging , costuming, and multi-media,

cinematic effects (when applicable and

feasible in performance space or venue). Extreme care has been taken to

explore and represent culturally and compositionally diverse repertoire, as

to reach a varied audience of countless backgrounds. Through this form of

dramatic and musical expression, we are striving to introduce our audiences

to a new and innovative way to present vocal repertoire, opening new doors

of opportunity for vocal performance in a recital setting. While we will for-

mally honor the historical and musical integrity

associated with each of the performed works, we are also attempting to break

down barriers often associated with classical music performance, making it

accessible and enjoyable for even the novice concert goer. We are ultimately

creating an experience of elation, expansiveness of spirit, which challenges

current cultural musical standards and expectations, while simultaneously pro-

ducing some dissonance for the sake of breaking new ground in people's aural,

visual, and spiritual consciousness.

Tenor, Kerry Lee Jennings, holds the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and

Master of Music Degrees from the University of Washington and the Doctor of

Musical Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Maryland at

College Park. He is now an Assistant Professor of Voice at DePauw University

where he teaches Applied Voice, Diction for Singers and directs the Opera and

Musical Theatre Scenes Programs. He is an active member of the College Mu-

sic Society, Opera America, the National Opera Association, and the National

Association of Teachers of Singing.

Michelle Rice, Mezzo-Soprano, with “tones of pure gold” (Washington Post), Michelle Rice brings to her

work a rich mezzo voice and notable performance intensity. Ms. Rice's masterful musicianship and

warmth of tone make her a sought after artist in modern music, opera and the concert stage. Ms. Rice

has been awarded prizes from the American Bach Society, the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition, the

Seattle Musical Art Society, the Mary Levine Scholarship Fund, the Bell T. Ritchie Awards, and the

Classical Singer Convention. She holds degrees from the University of Washington and the University of

Maryland Opera Studio.

Dr. Andria Fennig, piano, received her Doctorate of Musical Arts from Arizona State University in

2002. She has previously taught on the faculties of the University of Hawaii-Manoa and Paradise Valley

Community College. Dr. Fennig has a wide and all-encompassing piano performance background in-

cluding solo performance, collaborative artistry, chamber music, and pit orchestra work for touring

Broadway shows and entertainer acts (Wicked, Color Purple, West Side Story, Jackie Evancho, Il Divo,

and Three Irish Tenors. She currently is on staff as a pianist/accompanist/coach at Grand Canyon Uni-

versity. Additionally, she teaches a large body of private piano students in the Phoenix metropolitan ar-

ea, and is an accompanist and member of the Arts and Music Ministry at Paradise Valley United Meth-

odist Church.
