Dear IMPers:From the summer edition of the IMPulse, you will recall that one piece of IMP’s Enterprise Strategy, “Levers of Success” is developing our corporate social responsibility. On Friday, September 28, 2012, Dalhousie University recognized Mr. Rowe’s generosity by renaming its business school, the Rowe School of Business. IMP’s contributions to Dalhousie, as well as other educational organizations and hospitals, are evidence of how IMP is conscientious about being a socially responsible company.

For Dalhousie, Mr. Rowe provided a significant contribution to the building that bears his name, the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building, and is home to the newly named Rowe School of Business.

A few months ago, Atlantic Business Magazine recognized IMP Group as the “Biggest Giver” in Atlantic Canada for 2012. IWK Health Centre, QEII Health Sciences Centre, United Way, Salvation Army, Canadian Cancer Society, and the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia are a few of the organizations that benefit from IMP Group

giving back to our communities across the country. IMP Group also supports employee activities around raising funds

for charitable organizations, such as CAN-med’s efforts for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Corporate & IMP Solutions’ efforts for Feed Nova Scotia, CanJet’s clothing and food drives for local organizations, Innotech-Execaire’s efforts to support Asperger syndrome and Centraide, Atlantica Hotels’ employee efforts for the IWK and one of their own fighting cancer, IMP Aerostructures’ efforts to support their local United Way and YMCA, IMP Electronic Systems employee efforts to support their local food bank, and IMP Aerospace’s efforts to support cancer research organizations and Make-A-Wish Foundation to name a few.

I’m proud of all that we do as an organization and what you do as individuals to be socially responsible in our communities.

Rowe School of Business

On September 28th, 2012, students, faculty, and university dignitaries gathered under the beams of sunlight shining through the atrium of the beautiful Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building at Dalhousie University to hear the announcement that their business school is being renamed the Rowe School of Business.

Dr. Tom Traves, President, Dalhousie University, kicked off the event. “Almost the day I arrived on campus, Ken immediately impressed on me the importance of maintaining and strengthening business education at Dalhousie – a point on which, I’m happy to say, we totally agreed. Ever since that day, over the years, Ken has worked steadily, vigorously, to support and encourage the development of our School of Business.”

Dr. Peggy Cunningham, Dean, Faculty of Management, said that, “Dr. Rowe’s support and advice along with his generous gift are already showing results. Faculty, students and staff are energized, working hard, and producing results that would not have been possible without this support.”

In Mr. Rowe’s speech, he addressed the students, “I would like to emphasize to [you]

that there are no shortcuts or substitutes for hard work, honesty and integrity in business. We have seen too many examples in recent years of alternative behaviour, which led to the downfall of many successful careers and organizations. Also, try to have a passion for what you want to achieve as it can last a lifetime. I still have the same passion today to grow my company, the IMP Group, as I had when I started it in 1967.”

Dr. Tom Traves presented Mr. Rowe with a locally hand crafted crystal replica of the entrance to the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building. Christie Lang, President, Dalhousie MBA Student Society,

presented Mr. Rowe with a life preserver, signed by the students, to represent their thank you for “throwing them a line.” Mr. Rowe also received one of the first official Rowe School of Business hoodies. With a huge smile, he quickly traded his suit coat for the hoodie.

Paper airplanes branded “Dalhousie University, Inspiring

Minds, Rowe School of Business,” with the IMP Group logo tucked under their wings,

filled the atrium to finalize the celebration. The students who had been watching from all levels of the atrium showered Mr. Rowe with the planes to commemorate his contribution to the aerospace industry. On the inside of the planes, was a written tribute to the soaring competitive spirit of Kenneth Rowe. “It is Mr. Rowe’s leadership style, combined with his drive to win and his commitment to ethics in business that have led him to be widely regarded as one of the most brilliant business minds Canada has ever known. It is also what landed him in the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and it’s why Dalhousie University has named its business school after him.”

Rebranding: IMP Aerospace & DefenceOver the past number of years, IMP Aerospace has expanded its overall capabilities beyond the CP140 Aurora and CH124 Sea King fleets into supporting the CH149 Cormorant fleet at all operating locations and providing Depot Level Maintenance at the HIA location. Recently, the operation was successful in winning contracts to provide warehousing support to the Canadian C130J Hercules fleet, second line maintenance for the CT114 Tutor fleet and maintenance support for Canadian Army CH146 Griffon helicopters at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown. IMP Aerospace continues to be involved in international programs with the re-wing program for the Royal Norwegian Air Force P3 Orion fleet.

Over their history, IMP Aerospace has grown from a depot maintenance operation into one which provides turn-key “In-Service Support (ISS).” They have expanded their Materiel operations, their Engineering and Integrated Logistics Services (ILS), and are developing more comprehensive Technical Publications support for their customers. Their Continuous Improvement organization, which was created several years ago, continues to work hard to ensure they do all this work in an efficient and effective manner, in order to deliver better value to their customers.

The IMP Aerostructures and IMP Avionics facilities have evolved as well. In April 2011, they moved the IMP Machining operation to Amherst and made significant investments in tooling and machining equipment. The IMP Avionics operation has evolved from the traditional aircraft wire harness fabrication and Repair and Overhaul of avionics equipment to perform a significant amount of work for non-aircraft programs such as Army Land Vehicle Systems as well as Navy towed array

systems. Over the past twenty years they have taken on a significant amount of space related work, including most recently the Radarsat 3 buss and payload systems, and work on the James Webb Space Telescope and Ukrainian communication satellites.

Clearly, IMP Aerospace has developed a broad range of world-class capabilities, which have application beyond the aerospace sector, and is in fact, already providing substantial amounts of both products and services to naval and land customers. To better recognize this growing diversity of their customers and product applications, and to bring a stronger focus to the naval and land activities, the company has been reorganized with the creation of ‘IMP Aerospace

& Defence.’ This change comes at a time that fits well with current trends, given the recent announcements by the federal government to commit significant resources to recapitalizing

the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Coast Guard and Canadian Army. Thus, they have reorganized to better focus on the broader sectors.

The recapitalization projects outlined in the Canada First Defence Strategy and the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy include significant ISS activities, as well as manufacturing requirements for which IMP

Aerospace & Defence has significant competencies. To strengthen their ability to provide effective service and support to these sectors, David Gossen is pleased to announce that a Naval & Land Services office has been established. IMP Naval and Land

Services will coordinate integrated solutions utilizing the company’s expertise in Integrated Logistics Support, Engineering, Materials Management, high quality manufacturing and In-Service Support for customers in the Navy and Land system sectors.

Coincident with this change, the title of IMP Avionics has been changed to IMP Electronic Systems to better reflect the work performed and the customers they currently support and intend to support. Going forward, IMP Aerospace & Defence will consist of three separate divisions: IMP Aerospace, IMP Electronic Systems, and IMP Aerostructures. The IMP Naval & Land Services office, although not a separate division as such at this time, will report directly to David Gossen.

Developing new business is very dependant on performing well on existing business. They all have an important part to play towards ensuring they keep their existing customers delighted so that they will recommend them for additional business as opportunities arise. The dedication and professionalism of all IMP Aerospace & Defence staff has been a major factor in their growth and is very much appreciated. Mr. Gossen will continue to rely on his employees’ dedication and professionalism as they seek out new opportunities to expand their business and build a secure future for the company.

Smooth Operator: ExecaireExecaire has deep roots in the Canadian aviation industry that reach back nearly half a century. Today, Canada’s longest-standing corporate aircraft management company is part of the aviation division within the IMP Group of Companies – a diverse, privately owned Canadian conglomerate that employs more than 3,500 people across its six divisions.

Execaire currently manages a fleet of 33 aircraft, from Pilatus PC-12 turboprops to Bombardier Global Express business jets, and even a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter. From its head office in Montreal, Que., the company’s management team oversees Canadian branches in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver, as well as international operations in Spain and Africa. The firm has about 225 employees worldwide.

“Our core offering is aircraft management,” explained Michael Fedele, Vice President and General Manager. “With that, we also offer maintenance and charter services. In addition, we have a number of other ancillary services we provide to the industry.”

Execaire was founded 48 years ago, and was acquired by the IMP Group in 1991. The company had purchased a number of aviation-related organizations and merged them into the IMP Aviation Group. Execaire is the air operator and the aircraft management company within that group. It bills itself as the only company in Canada that can manage the entire life cycle of an aircraft, from the pre-purchase to acquisition, to certification, management, charter, maintenance and even re-sale.

“It’s a complete turnkey operation,” Fedele told Canadian Skies. “Our focus is on making the aircraft ownership experience the best it can be for our clients, which means that each of them has a bit of a tailored solution. We provide dispatch, flight planning, operations, maintenance, commissary services, car care services, financial planning and budgeting, and account management for support contracts associated with aircraft.”

Fedele said most owners hire Execaire to handle every aspect of managing their aircraft. Other customers may want only heavy or line maintenance, or perhaps just flight planning services. To keep track of the myriad of tiny details, Execaire implemented a customer relationship management (CRM)

system that contains a detailed profile for each individual aircraft, and each person who typically flies on that aircraft. No request is too small.

“All our customers need to do is give us

their requirements, and we take care of the rest,” said Execaire’s Director of Sales and Marketing, George Nader. “We get a lot of repeat business because we deliver to their full expectations. Something that is unique to Execaire is that we have our own private, dedicated lounges in Montreal and Toronto. Our clients come into an exclusive lounge, where we have customer service staff on hand to cater to them. It’s not a public FBO; it’s an exclusive, secure and private facility.”

A number of Execaire’s clients have been with the company since its pre-IMP days. Some owners reserve their aircraft for exclusive use, while others are happy to have Execaire charter out their plane when they don’t need it.

“More and more these days, a good management company needs a strong chartering capability,” said Fedele. “We have a dedicated charter sales group and we do a fair bit of chartering. Not all of our owners want their aircraft chartered; but for those who do, we take care of them.”

In 2011, the Execaire fleet flew approximately 10,000 hours. Charters accounted for roughly 20 per cent of that total, with the remainder being owner-occupied flights. The dedicated charter sales department includes seven staff members, who serve two categories of customers: those who are members of the Execaire Jetcard program, launched in November 2011, which allows customers to purchase a block of hours on a certain category of airplane; and, those who “spot charter.” In Fedele’s words: “This could be a high net worth individual, an organ transfer, or any number of scenarios.”

The Jetcard has been a very successful addition to Execaire’s suite of products and services. Fedele said the block purchase program makes good financial sense

for executives who need the benefits of corporate aviation, but who don’t travel enough to justify owning an aircraft.

Innovation, Process and PeopleForward thinking is encouraged at Execaire. The latest technology and tools are put to good use in the office and in the cockpit, where pilots utilize electronic flight bags, including iPads and smartphones, to stay in touch while on a trip. Aircraft are tracked via satellite on a round-the-clock basis by the flight

operations centre in Montreal. On the customer side, Execaire’s Customer

Care website features an online billing system accessed through a secure portal. Here, clients can see every expense that has been billed against their aircraft, with invoices provided to validate the charges and for comparison purposes against their 12-month aircraft operating budget. “We have a 100 per cent transparency process when it comes to expense management,” said Fedele. “In fact, we’re a very process-focused company. We recognize that our clients don’t experience our departments; they experience our processes. We are focusing more on process management and improvement.”

One of Execaire’s signature processes is the assignment of a dedicated aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) to each managed aircraft. That engineer works exclusively on one plane, becoming intimately familiar with its unique characteristics.

Jim Sleeth, Maintenance Production Manager at Execaire in Toronto, said the company has been structuring its maintenance services this way for the better part of 40 years. “The whole emphasis behind it is to have a dedicated AME assigned to a particular airplane. They keep track of all ongoing maintenance; they schedule heavy maintenance; they meet and depart the aircraft on every trip. They also have dealings with the aircraft budgets. They are the maintenance point of contact for that airplane,” explained Sleeth, who has been with Execaire for 32 years. “From my personal standpoint as a former assigned engineer, you have ownership of that aircraft and you take pride in looking after it. That in itself says a lot. Because of that, the level of service is often higher.”

With about 65 AMEs on staff and 33

aircraft in the fleet, not every engineer is assigned to a specific plane. Those who are not are often called upon to service the country’s Cessna Citation fleet (Execaire is Canada’s only factory-authorized Citation service centre). In addition, the maintenance staff provides everything from line repairs to heavy inspections on a variety of aircraft, including the Bombardier Challenger, Learjet and Hawker aircraft. Specialized services, including non-destructive testing (NDT) are also offered to outside operators. Heavy maintenance is performed in Montreal and Toronto, with other locations offering line maintenance only.

In addition to its long-time practice of assigned AMEs, Execaire provides dedicated flight crews for each of its managed aircraft. Its structure is also unique in that it has divided Canada into three regions – Western, Central (Ontario) and Quebec-Eastern. Although the management group is mostly concentrated in Montreal, each of the three regions has a chief pilot, a head of maintenance and a business leader who looks after client interests. The system works, said Fedele: “You get to tap into a lot of expertise. We have a huge amount of expertise at Execaire and we work to tap into that for our clients’ benefit as much as possible. It allows for closer supervision of the operation, as well as evaluation and operational improvement. It’s a larger team, and we leverage that experience.”

Notable GrowthDespite recent economic upheaval, Execaire has forged ahead with an aggressive business plan that resulted in the addition of 11 aircraft to the fleet in 2011. “In the last year, our most notable achievement was our growth,” said Fedele. “When you look at the economy, and you look at the number of jet aircraft that have come into Canada, we’ve significantly outpaced the market. Last year, we also moved into international operations. It’s been a pretty busy place here; it’s been a lot of fun, but also challenging.”

In keeping with its service commitment, Execaire has made significant investments in its infrastructure. A 24,000-square-foot hangar is due to be completed in Montreal later this year. In addition, a new private customer lounge was finished in Toronto and exterior building improvements are also planned for that location.

Along with improving facilities and services at its existing locations, Darren Oldford, Toronto Sales Manager, Aircraft Management and Charter, said Western Canada is a region that is targeted for expansion.

“My focus is to develop the West,” Oldford said during a recent Canadian Skies visit to Execaire’s Toronto base. “We are also looking to grow in the markets where we already have a strong foothold. Our biggest growth has been in the Toronto market in the past year, where we have added four aircraft.”

Oldford said there has been a concerted effort to market Execaire’s services by establishing connections with prospective clients and educating them about the company’s capabilities. And, those capabilities go far beyond aircraft management and charter. “We also provide international flight planning services for 12 companies over and above our own managed clients,” Oldford explained. “We see this as an avenue that is truly one of our strengths. We’ve started marketing it heavily and speaking to people about it specifically.”

Other red-carpet services provided by Execaire include custom aircraft grooming, performed by in-house staff who also handle

the company’s executive car care program. While on a business trip, a client’s automobile is groomed to the same high standards as their aircraft. Execaire hangars have also hosted several large-scale social events, dinners and fundraisers.

Serious about SafetyExecaire takes safety very seriously, said Fedele. The company passed an external audit and has received its ISBAO (International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations) level one certification, an internationally-recognized set of best practices for corporate aviation operations. It has also been awarded a platinum rating from the safety audit experts at ARGUS, which is the highest certification awarded to operators with a well-developed safety management system (SMS), a clear emergency response plan, and thorough documentation and record-keeping practices in the operations and maintenance departments.

Fedele added that safety at Execaire extends beyond in-air operations. “We have a robust health and safety management committee, with zero accidents and lost days at work.”

Overall, Execaire’s success has been built on years of solid experience in corporate aircraft management, charter and related services. Last year, the company established its first international bases in Spain and

Africa. Also targeted for further expansion are Europe and South America, where Fedele said the company can leverage its “Canadian know-how and bring it to other regions outside of Canada.”

From aircraft management to charters, and from maintenance to aircraft sales and beyond, Execaire has worked hard to establish its solid reputation in the aviation industry. The focus is on the future, with expansion plans in motion that will allow the company to further serve its existing customers, while also attracting new business.

Long-time maintenance employee Jim Sleeth puts it this way: “We’ve been successful because we pay attention to detail, and focus on the customer. My view of dealing with people is that I deal with our customers in the same way I would want to be treated, and that’s always worked well.”

As it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2014, Execaire is forging ahead by capitalizing on its experienced people and proven processes, while continuing to nurture a culture of innovation. They know that for aircraft owners and users, it’s all about the experience.

CanJet has a New Hangar in Montreal

As of mid-July, CanJet has moved into the new Air Creebec hangar in Montreal. The hangar is situated on Ryan Avenue and borders on runways 24 Left/6 Right. The CanJet staff, maintenance and stores, has settled into its “new home”.

By all accounts, the facilities are extremely impressive and employee-friendly. The stores facility’s floor space has almost tripled in size. The well-lit, climate controlled hangar makes working on the premises more comfortable and, thus, more enjoyable. The

ramp, located directly in front of the hangar, makes scheduled work easier to plan and execute. All in all, CanJet employees are thrilled with the locale.

IMP Electronic Systems Completes Major Satellite MilestoneIMP Electronic Systems is pleased to announce that they have successfully completed and installed the repeater wire harnesses for the Express-AM 5 and the Express-AM 6 Satellites for Macdonald, Dettwiler and Associates Corporation (MDA). The satellites will be operated by the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC). The first satellite is expected to be launched in early 2013. The wire harnesses represented an incredible technical challenge

due to the high wire count (over 30,000 connection points), detailed workmanship required and the physical challenges of building harnesses on a 15x8x7 foot mock up.

Upon the successful integration of the AM 6 Satellite, IMP was awarded a follow on program for the manufacture, test and install of wire harnesses for the Lybid Satellite. Final testing of the harnesses will be completed at IMP in September 2012 with integration occurring at MDA in Montreal by the IMP

team in October. The Lybid Satellite will be in the first Ukrainian telecommunications satellite and will be launched in 2014.

Employment Equity at CanJet

The Employment Equity Committee at CanJet is taking off with their employment equity initiatives. In August, they released the second edition of their Employment Equity newsletter highlighting their initiatives to encourage a more diverse workforce, a success story of a flight attendant’s journey to make it on her own in Canada and a list of multi-cultural festivities in Montreal, Toronto and Halifax.

One of the main goals of the committee is to increase representation of the designated employment equity groups in their workforce by joining forces with organizations that represent these groups. They have identified organizations in Halifax, Montreal and

Toronto to which they will be sending job opportunities in an effort to attract greater diversity amongst their workforce.

Despite being challenged by being located in many different geographical locations, the CanJet Employment Equity Committee is working together to make a difference for diversity in their workplace.

Congratulations on the success of your continued efforts!

Controlling the Cost of Your Prescription DrugsOver the last couple of years, several provinces have experienced a change in prescription drug prices as a result of Provincial Generic Drug Reform. The core focus of the drug reform is that the provincial governments have limited the cost of generic drugs to their provincial drug programs, and this has been carried into the private plans offered by employers as well, including IMP.

While the revised ingredient costs have helped reduce plan costs across the provinces, it has come at the expense of an increase in dispensing fees (the portion of the drug cost related to what pharmacies charge to dispense the drug). In Nova Scotia, we have seen this fee limit increase from $9.83 in July 2011 to the present level of $11.65. This does not mean that all pharmacies have increased their dispensing fees to this level, and many, including Walmart, Costco and Superstore, are still charging dispensing fees

well below the new fee limit. The opportunity for us as IMP employees is

to consider shopping around for prescription medications. While we understand you have relationships with the pharmacies you currently use, we would encourage you to discuss the cost of the medication with your pharmacist. Just like we do with other purchases we make, the more informed we are about the cost of an item, the more we can look around for the best price. Consider pharmacies with lower dispensing fees in your purchasing decision.

By taking these small steps, it will help ensure that our drug plan will remain financially stable for the long term, and at the same time, will help to minimize your out of pocket cost.

Claire’s Share

Claire Shay, 6 year employee (and Star of the year 2010) at Atlantica Hotel Halifax is notably recognized for her warm presence, friendly smile, compassionate nature, eagerness to impress and stellar service excellence.

Claire has been diagnosed with cancer

and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. In an effort to assist Claire with her medical expenses and ease the weight of her battle, Roanna Richard (this year celebrating her 10 year anniversary at the Atlantica Hotel Halifax) executed a two month fundraising initiative during the months of July and August at the hotel. Every week, Roanna sold 50/50 tickets to Atlantica staff and the draw took place every Friday during their ‘Shining Stars’ meeting. With Roanna’s dedication and determination, the Atlantica Hotel team contributed over $1000 to Claire’s Share.

Claire has expressed her deep gratitude and looks forward to seeing her friends, family and colleagues at Atlantica Hotel, very soon!

Claire is missed by the staff of the hotel. They all look forward to seeing her smile again soon. ,

Roanna has reminded everyone the importance of putting your caring thoughts

and wishes into action. Thank you Roanna!

The NS - NB Cross Border Challenge

The Cross Border Challenge is a 10k walk or run across the World Famous Tantramar Marsh. For those of you not familiar with the marsh (formerly known as Beaubassin), it is a National Wildlife Area on the southern part of the Isthmus of Chignecto, which joins Nova Scotia to New Brunswick and the Canadian

mainland. The 10 K point to point course starts in Aulac, NB, and finishes in Amherst,

NS.The Cross Border

challenge has been held annually since 2009 and continues to grow in size with 280 registered participants for this year’s race. The net proceeds from the challenge go to the Cumberland YMCA for youth programs and this year the run raised over $20,000! It truly was a fantastic fundraiser for the community. A big

congratulations goes out to the volunteers and those that participated in the 10k run/

walk, including the IMP Aerostructure’s employees who contributed to the run’s success.

Excellent Family Reunion at the Atlantica Hotel HalifaxA letter to the General Manager of the Atlantica Hotel Halifax:Dear Mr. Rehemtulla,...I am part of a team of family members who recently held an event at your hotel. The Carvery Family Reunion had a Gala Dinner and Dance on July 21, 2012, at the Atlantica Hotel [Halifax] and it would be remiss of me if I did not write to tell you of your wonderful staff. This Reunion was in the making for a full year as we wanted nothing but the best for our family members as they were traveling from all parts of this country and others… We were in touch for that year with your Executive Meeting & Conference Service Manager, Catherine Coutts, Laura Dole, Sales Manager, Jeannette Kline, Food & Beverage Manager, and Chef Luis Clavel. These people

were excellent and went over and above to accommodate us in any and all of our many questions and requests. The venue itself was first class and beautifully decorated…The food was off the chart and no one had any complaints… I cannot forget the servers for that night, as they were great, everything went smoothly, very professional, even when we had late arrivals. Your staff at the front desk were courteous and friendly, checking in and checking out our relatives…

We as a family cannot say enough or thank these individuals enough for making our Family Reunion the best. They are to be commended, your hotel will be highly recommended by us all. These individuals that I have named by name and those I have not are assets to your establishment and like

I said, I would be remiss in letting you know how wonderful they are.

Chef Louis wow! We had a food tasting with him before the event and it was very good. The night of the dinner, it was even better. Folks were asking for more and they were a hard crowd to please.

Atlantica Hotel [Halifax] “You Rock.” As I have been told by my grandson that means, “You’re the best.”Sincerely yours,Paula Grant-Smith

Condiments BBQ for Corporate OfficeThe Corporate Events Committee organized the third annual summer BBQ for Corporate and IMP Solutions employees. The event has become a much anticipated treat for a Friday lunch each June. This year, back by popular demand for their comedic approach to bar-b-queing, were guest chefs, Bernie (Ketchup) O’Rourke and Dave (Mustard) MacKinnon. This year, the chefs decided that instead of competing, they would coordinate their efforts and work together as friendly condiments instead of fueding super-hereos. Despite their

best efforts to be

friends, they decided at the end of the BBQ, that next year they will once again be foe and compete for the ultimate BBQ championship title. The staff aren’t sure how it is that they are competing or what the title is, exactly, that they are competing for. But that’s OK, everyone has food and fun. A special thank you to the members of the Corporate Events Committee for organizing this and other events that bring together the different departments of people at the Corporate office building.
