Message from the Chair From the chilly start at Hit the Links to the WGANJ Cup Club Championship, we’re having a great season. This year we hit a new all-time high with 456 members and we couldn’t be happier. You make this an organization that others want to be a part of and you should be proud of that. We offer fun outings, supportive leagues and challenging competition which combined, has helped us attract more new members than ever before. As always, I’d like to thank the Board of Directors, Governance and all of the volunteers that have help put this year together. As an all-volunteer organization we depend on each other to make it happen and this group comes through every time. Lori Dugan has put together daytime events and weekend getaways so you had plenty of opportunities to choose from and JoAnn Jordan organizes the WGANJ store so you look good playing. Juliet Sisti, with directors Valerie Oakes-Locascio, Wanda Baker and Jeanette Kirazian have organized all of the leagues, education and handicap opportunities so that you can learn and play all summer long. Kerri Donnelly and Pat Schumacher, do all they can to encourage new membership and welcome the women that join WGANJ in a way that makes each of them feel that they have a personal connection with someone right from the start. Patty Steele and Eva Conover work tirelessly to keep the website up to date, create and manage the email information blasts and development of this newsletter. Without them, many of us wouldn’t know what’s going on in the organization at all. Allyson Doherty along with Margaret Bryzk and Pura Rios support the organization with marketing and sponsorship efforts to help fund the subsidy program so that we can cut your cost for events and get more members involved. And Lorie Saettler, with support from Barbara Adamek, help to keep us on financial track processing all of membership, league and event registrations and payments. Balancing the checkbook at the end of our year can’t be easy and I’m glad we have them to do it. Lorraine Siu helps us keep our meeting documents up to date and the Governance Board including Linda Graham, Jane Mercante and Laura Marini, help us operate in the best interest of the organization. The season may be winding down but the excitement isn’t. We still have leagues in progress as well as events planned such as the Seaview Trip, End of Season, Scrambleween – which is always full of fright and fantasy – and finally the Holiday Party, which will be held at Biagio’s Restaurant this year and promises to be great. We hope that you are able to join us for all or at least some of these events. We look forward to seeing you and thank you for your continued attendance and involvement. WGANJ Cup 2014The only competition of the year and our version of the Club Championship, The WGANJ CUP Tournament, was held on August 17th at The Knoll West Country Club. Thirty members took the challenge and tried their best to keep their scores low in the chase for the CUP. The weather was beautiful despite forecasts of storms and the course was in good condition. With members divided into three competitive flights, foursome after foursome teed off at the first hole with excitement and a little trepidation. Some of the competitors have been here year after year and some embarked on the adventure for the first time. No matter how much experience you have, that first tee is always a little nerve-racking. Soon enough the nerves quickly settled down and play was fully underway. Finishing in about a 4 ½ hour round, groups returned to the clubhouse to await the news and see how they measured up. Winning Low Net in Flights were: Flight 3 winner was first timer Kathy Nugent, Flight 2 winner was repeat performer Kim Kent, Flight 1 winner is always a top finisher, Phyllis Johnson, and overall club champion and WGANJ CUP Low Gross winner was Anna Turner with an 80, only eight strokes over par. Congratulations to all of the winners, you did really well and made twenty-six of your fellow competitors envious of your game.

Hit the Links Kick-off – Cold Hands.... Hot Shots!Blustery weather couldn’t cool down the hot golf happening during the 2014 WGANJ annual season opener held at Crystal Springs Resort on Sunday, April 27th. Seventy-six members enjoyed a delicious brunch while the WGANJ store sold out of every item of clothing that offered protection from the cold! Those who won door prizes were met with loud cheers and congratulated! All golfers convened dressed for the Arctic and thoroughly enjoyed the first taste of golf for this year!

Twenty WGANJ members embarked on a weekend trip to nearby Pocono, PA., staying at the accommodating Pocono Manor Inn and Spa, June 6 through 8th. They had the great fortune to be met with weather-friendly days, and three golf courses in great condition, making for a truly enjoyable golfing experience. Day one was played at the beautiful and challenging Mt. Airy Golf Course. Fernwood Golf Course provided the venue for the second day’s interesting round. Just ask Naomi and Jeanette who we can say “experienced cart problems”. With no thanks to our collective GPS systems, and road closures for the big NASCAR race, we all finally arrived at the picturesque and challenging Jack Frost National GC on day three. Nightlife is always a fun part of these trips and the hotel offered shuttle trips to The Mt. Airy Casino. Others chose to remain at the resort, where a live band provided the music for listening and dancing. Thank you to Lori Dugan for putting together this wonderful trip!

It’s been great to see the Advanced Beginners really grow as golfers this season! The camaraderie of this group has been amazing. Everyone has been so encouraging and willing to help their fellow golfers out with a few tips when needed. Add in the great lessons we received from the pros and these ladies have really learned to manage the golf course so much better and with more confidence. It is evident how much progress this group has made with all the Par, Chip In, Break 60, Break 50... And even a Birdie bragging pins that have been given out! The Advanced Beginners are now feeling comfortable to attend the outings and are having a ton of fun getting to know the ladies of WGANJ.

The Weekend Intermediate Travel league had a great season.

More than forty different women enjoyed the courses that we played such as Fox Hollow, Nashanic Valley, West Point and Architects. We’ve had our challenges with tall fescue and mountainside fairways, but we always had fun. The courses that we played have been in beautiful condition and it’s nice to play a course that you haven’t been on for a while. Bringing a gentle mix of competition and fun to the league, each week we recognize the player with the low net score and low putts. We also have a voluntary chip in pot where members are eligible to win the pot if they chip in from off the green. The focused attention on chipping and putting has helped us to play a better game.

We’re sad to see this season draw to a close and look forward to next year and a new group of courses to conquer.

Volunteers NeededAs you know, WGANJ is an all-volunteer organization. Planning and coordinating leagues and outings take the efforts of many individuals. We can use all the help we can get. If you have time and can make an ongoing commitment to becoming a board member or chairing a committee, we need you. If you have limited time and can assist with planning a single event, coordinate registration for a single outing, welcome new members at an event or reach out to local businesses for sponsorship and support – we need you. Any time you can contribute will help WGANJ and all its members. Please contact [email protected] to discuss your availability and we will help match your time and talent to a real job that needs to be done to make our 2015 season a great success. This is your opportunity to get involved. We at WGANJ pride ourselves on being a dynamic organization that strives to provide great golf opportunities for our members. We rely on your support and active participation to make this happen.

Fresh Ideas for Healthy Living with Eva Conover, Health Coach

Your Healthy GameWhat do golf and healthy living have in common? One word comes to mind….practice. We all want to improve our game and lower our scores. So what do we do? We take lessons to learn the proper techniques, then we practice what we have learned, and build some type of muscle memory. And we joined WGANJ to make the time to play regularly, knowing that the knowledge of the right technique, paired with practice would help improve our game.

We actually do a lot of this in life. We buy cookbooks and practice making new dishes. We take classes and practice all kinds of things. Why don’t we all practice a healthy lifestyle? A large percentage of us are not as healthy as we want to be, we don’t have the energy level we want and may be carrying around some unwanted pounds. We complain about it. We spend billions of dollars on “fixes” and potions and books and videos, often repeatedly, trying to find that magic combination that will make us feel better.

What if I told you all you had to do was practice – just like golf.

1. Find the right technique: Find (or learn) the healthy activities, foods and routines that make you feel better. The basics are simple.

•Eat“wholefoods”,foodsthatcomeintheirnaturalstate.Avoidpackaged,processedfoods,addedsugars and white flours.

•Addveggies–asmanyasyoucanofallcolors.Eightservingsoffruit/veggiesperday! •Drinkwater •Sleepwell •Stayactive •Becomemoremindfulofhowyourbodyreactstodifferentfoods,activitiesandstressors. •Activelyworkonstressreduction •Findalifeyoulove •Practicegratitude

2. PRACTICE! Once you recognize feeling better, you will want to keep practicing. Its that simple. It might not be “easy”, but the concept is quite simple and easy to follow.

We probably allowed ourselves, for years, to practice bad habits, that is how they became so ingrained in our lives. Bad eating habits, possibly due to stress, loneliness and anger. Working at jobs that don’t fulfill us and choosing relationships that don’t support us. We practiced all those bad habits, almost unknowingly.

It’s time to open our eyes and find a healthy lifestyle to practice. We need to find activities, food, relationships and new habits that make us truly happy, not just superficially. Things that support our mind, body and soul in a healthy way. Find them, then practice them. I guarantee that practice will make it almost perfect (nothing is perfect) and you will definitely improve your “game”, both in life and in golf.

Enjoy and be well!

Green Mountain State Welcomes WGANJ for a Spectacular Weekend.Fourteen WGANJ members traveled to Vermont for three glorious days of golf. Erin Kennedy graciously offered the use of her vacation home, hot tub, games and hospitality for the trip. We were all there by Friday night, with some of us playing the Okemo Mtn. course Friday morning – beautiful vistas and some pretty good golf. We all met up and headed out for dinner at the Foundry. Then it was back to the house for games, conversation and a few too many libations.

On Saturday, we played Green Mountain National. The course was in great shape, the weather was beautiful, the egg sandwiches unparalleled and we were itching to get out there. After the round, some of us relaxed at the Kennedy Compound while the more adventurous among us hiked up a mountain to a beautiful waterfall, where we swam in pools created from the falls and got back massages from water rushing down the rocks. We have decided this is a must see for the next trip! For dinner that night, we had a Mexican Fiesta, complete

with margaritas, sangria and everyone made a dish or a dessert. How do you say smorgasbord in Spanish?

On Sunday it was the Killington

course. The course was tough, but we all made it through. A night of leftovers and frozen drinks followed and prizes were given out for various on-course contests. Monday we said goodbye to Vermont and headed to New York State, where we played at Hiland Golf Club. The playing was slow, but the day was beautiful and the beer was cold. The course got us closer to home, three hours later we were home and signing up for Seaview!

Recipe: Baked French ToastFrom the Kitchen of: Ginny Perazzone1 loaf sourdough bread (I used Pepperidge Farm, 1.5 pound loaf)8 eggs2 cups milk (I used 1%)1/2 cup heavy cream3/4 cup sugar

2 Tbsp. vanilla

Topping:1/2 cup all-purpose flour1/2 cup packed brown sugar1 tsp. cinnamon1/4 tsp. salt

1 stick cold butter, cut into piecesGrease a 9x13 pan with butter. Tear bread into bite-size chunks and place evenly in the

pan. Mix together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla. Pour evenly over bread.

Cover tightly and store in the fridge for several hours (I put mine in overnight....it was

about 12 hours). In a medium bowl mix together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon,

and salt. Cut in the butterwith a pastry blender until it all looks nice and crumbly (like

small pebbles, according to P-Dub). Place in a ziploc bag and put in fridge. When ready

to bake, take pan and bag out of fridge. Remove wrap and evenly sprinkle the crumb

mixture over the top. Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees (or 45 minutes if you like it more

soft and pudding-like).IMPORTANT!! You must use a dense bread or this dish will turn out soggy. After

getting a few comments below about soggy outcomes, I figured I’d better make sure

you understand that. You can’t use regular sandwich bread because it will NOT soak up

the egg mixture! I highly recommend starting with the bread listed in the ingredients

above as this has ALWAYS turned out perfectly for me.• You can serve with syrup, but we made a quick glaze with powdered sugar and milk.

Delish! • If you don’t have brown sugar, mix 1/2 Tbsp. molasses with 1/2 cup sugar

until well blended. • Like I said, you can bake it for less time if you like it softer, but I

love how the top gets crispy when it’s baked for an hour. The underneath part is still

somewhat soft. One hour in my 350-oven was just right. • The directions said to scoop

out, but I wanted to be able to control the portions so I cut it into 12 servings (they

were large, and this is rich, so you could serve other breakfast dishes and use this as

more of a side dish and get 24 servings). • If you have a hot oven, cover the dish with

foil for the last 15 minutes or so if you notice that it’s starting to get too brown (I have

never had to do this, though). • If you don’t have a pastry cutter use two knives

moving away from each other to cut in the butter for the topping. Do NOT use a fork

to mash! It will be a globby mess!

Education Programs with WGANJWGANJ is all about women and golf and teaching to women to golf is a big part of that. We have the most comprehensive education program around for women and we’re proud of it.

Our first and most utilized education program is the Beginner Golf Program and Advanced Beginner leagues. The Beginner Golf Program takes women that may have never picked up a club and provides lesson and mentors to teach them the basics of the game and swing so that by the end of the summer they are able to hold their own on the course. Many of our Beginner Golfers this year are already playing full rounds of golf on the weekends and having a great time with it.

The Advanced Beginner Leagues offer members that have the basic understanding of golf and some experience the opportunity to play in a weekly league which offers support in a non-threating environment. The two Advanced Beginner Leagues this year offer members either three or seven lessons as part of the league so that members could select the program that is best for them.

In addition to leagues, WGANJ offers clinics for golfers of all levels. Our newest teaching pro is LPGA certified and offers lessons outdoors or in. Debbie O’Connell hit the ground running with our groups this year offering members training drills, exercises and tips to help improve their games. These clinics offer members the most selection opportunities with varying days, times and subjects. Once the weather turns colder, Debbie will continue to offer members clinics in an indoor environment so you can keep learning and come back next year ready to take on any challenge.

The newest addition to our education program this year was a weekend golf school in the Pocono Region. This was two days of intense education with multiple teaching pros. The focus on each facet of the game was beneficial to all with breakout groups for Driving and long irons, chipping and pitching, and special devotion to putting since we know what a key part of the game it is. These pros taught the members new techniques as well as drills to keep it all fresh once they returned home. We’ve already had members asking when the next education weekend will be so that they are ready for next year.

If you have a special education request or idea, please let us know by emailing [email protected]
