Jason Woodman begins his fourth season as head football coach at Fairmont State University after leading the Falcons to a third place finish in the Mountain East Conference standings in 2015. Wood-man was named the 18th coach in program history on December 20, 2012.

Last season following a slow start for FSU, Wood-man and his staff led the Falcons to a 6-2 record in the final eight games of the season. The finish helped the Falcons to a 6-4 overall record and a third place finish in the league. Following the season, nine FSU players earned All-Mountain East Conference honors, including Jacob Jean-Charles who earned first team honors and was named an all-region cornerback by the Don Hansen Football Gazette.

In 2015, the FSU offense scored 30-points or more in six games and quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed nearly 60 percent of his passes and did not throw an interception until the seventh game of the season. Hibbs finished the year with 21 touchdowns and just four interceptions, passing for over 2,400 yards.

In addition to Hibbs’ standout season, the FSU offense had three players earn all-conference honors, including junior wide receiver Fabian Guerra and senior running back Austin White.

In his first two seasons on the FSU sideline, Wood-man produced seven All-MEC performers and an All-Atlantic region honoree. Following the 2014 season, Fabian Guerra earned third team All-Atlantic Region honors by Beyond Sports Network and freshman in-side linebacker Marcus Porter was named a Freshman All-American by USA College Football.

Woodman came to Fairmont State after serving as the offensive coordinator at Bowie State in 2011 and 2012. The Bulldogs set several school records and ranked among the best in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). He coached three players to All-CIAA honors and his offense averaged well over 350 yards per game during his time with BSU.

Prior to his stint at Bowie State, Woodman worked for two years at Concord as the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator and helped resurrect the Mountain Lion program. In his two seasons with the program, the Mountain Lions compiled a record of 14-8. Woodman also helped develop wideout Thomas Mayo into a first team All-WVIAC performer in both of his seasons as wide receivers coach at Concord.

Woodman began his college coaching career with three seasons at Louisiana State University (2004-2006) under head coaches Nick Saban and Les Miles. Woodman worked as a graduate assistant under Jimbo Fisher, then the Tigers’ Offensive Coordinator.

When Florida State hired Fisher in 2007, Woodman followed the coach to Tallahassee to work under legendary head coach Bobby Bowden.

The following year, Woodman was hired at Cali-fornia University (Pa.). With Woodman as running backs coach, the Vulcans went 13-1, winning their first outright Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship and setting a school record for wins in a season while helping the Vulcans to the national semifinals.

Woodman and his wife, Kari, have four children, sons Taner, Knox and Brodi and daughter Kinleigh.

FSU entered this past week’s action as one of just 22 unbeaten teams in the country in NCAA Divi-sion II. Now just 16 unbeatens remain, including Shepherd University (4-0, 4-0) of the MEC. The Rams, who played for the national championship last season, were idle this past weekend and are tied with Fairmont State for the league lead. Shep-herd was ranked fourth in the nation last week in the AFCA Top 25 Poll and fifth in the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll.

Of the 16 remaining unbeaten teams only Fair-mont State, LIU Post and Southwest Baptist were not ranked in either D-II Top 25 poll. Both South-west Baptist and Post received votes in last week’s coach’s poll, but as of last week Fairmont State had not received a single vote.

The new AFCA poll will be announced Monday, while the updated D2Football.com Poll will be re-leased Tuesday.

FSU, which finished 8-2 in 1999 and 7-3 in 2000, has not been nationally ranked since Sept. 15, 1997 when the Falcons got off to a 2-0 start and were ranked 19th in the nation. That team finished 5-6.

Both Fairmont State’s coaching staff and players know they still have much to prove to deserve a national ranking. The combined record of the op-ponents FSU has beaten this fall is just 8-16 (.333).

“We recognize we’ve still got work to do as a team,” fourth-year Falcon coach Jason Woodman said. “We do a pretty good job of focusing on things week by week and staying on the guys and not letting them get complacent. I think our guys understand if we keep doing that and keep mak-ing improvements every week that we have the potential to have good things happen for us.”

Senior safety Manny Ivey agrees.

“Being 5-0 feels pretty good, especially since we were 3-7 my freshman year, 3-7 my sophomore year and 6-4 last year,” Ivey said. “The good thing about this team is we’ve got a lot of good, young talented guys and no one is satisfied right now with where we’re at. Every week is a new chal-lenge for us and we know we have to meet that challenge and improve each and every week.”

Five of the 16 unbeaten teams in NCAA Division II are in Super Region I. Those five include FSU and Shepherd of the Mountain East Conference, Indi-ana (Pa.) University and California (Pa.) University

of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and LIU Post of the Northeast 10 Conference. IUP and Cal will square off this coming Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Vulcans’ Adamson Stadium.---Fairmont State’s offense accounted for a season-high 41 points in the Falcons’ 48-14 victory over Ur-bana University Saturday. FSU, which found itself trailing the Blue Knights 14-7 with 7:39 left in the opening quarter, reeled off 41 unanswered points, 34 of which came from the offense.

Senior quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed 22-of-37 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns – a 23-yarder to freshman receiver Laurence King and a 13-yarder to senior Fabian Guerra.

Hibbs now has completed 118-of-176 passes for 1,297 yards and seven touchdowns this season. He’s been intercepted six times. For his career Hibbs has completed 590-of-1,007 passes for 7,106 yards and 53 TDs. He’s suffered 30 career intercep-tions. Hibbs currently ranks third in school history in all major statistical passing categories.

King, a 5-7, 180-pounder from Greenbelt, Md., en-joyed another big day catching the ball for FSU. He hauled in a game-high nine passes for 94 yards and his first college career TD. For the season he has a team-high 35 receptions for 343 yards and one score.

“When Urbana came out and scored on us early we knew offensively we had to answer,” King said. “They scored again and we answered again and then our defense locked down and shut them out the rest of the way and offensively we weren’t about to take our foot off of the pedal.

“We had some guys out today and I felt like I need to try my best to step up for them and step up for our team. Hopefully we get them back next week and we can keep progressing and keep getting better as an offense.”

King also returned a pair of punts for 68 yards in the win, including a 53-yard return in the second quarter which led to a field goal. He also returned one kickoff 26 yards.

Guerra caught six passes for 76 yards and a TD in the victory. He now has 191 career receptions for 2,424 yards and 18 touchdowns. He needs two more catches to pass Todd Anderson for second place all-time in terms of career receptions at FSU and 158 receiving yards to move past Ed Coleman for second place in school history in that category. With 13 more catches Guerra will move past Jason Trent for first place in FSU history in career recep-tions. For the season Guerra has 34 catches for a team-high 468 yards and five touchdowns.

Also on Saturday junior Brandon Boyd caught four passes for 42 yards and backup sophomore receiv-er Jeff Iweh tallied a career-high three catches for a career-high 55 yards.

In the fourth quarter Fairmont’s reserves got into the scoring act when redshirt freshman quarter-back Takwan Crews-Naylor connected with true

freshman receiver Dana Jackson on a 37-yard scor-ing strike with 8:57 remaining.---FSU junior running back Terrell Charles, who en-tered the weekend second in the Mountain East Conference in rushing, saw very limited action in Saturday’s win due to nagging injuries. He fin-ished with just 15 yards on four carries, three of which came on the Falcons’ first two drives of the game.

In his place FSU called upon sophomore James Oli-ver, who had only played sparingly in the Falcons’ first four games. Oliver, a 5-10, 205-pounder from Tyrone, Pa., responded with a career-high 127 yards rushing and one touchdown on 17 carries. His 61-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter gave Fairmont a 41-14 lead.

“I never got down,” Oliver said. “I just kept prac-ticing, working hard and taking advice from coach Woodman and coach Vince (Giardina), our run-ning backs coach. Today I got the call and I just tried to step up and do what I could to help us win. Give credit to the ‘O’ line. They opened holes for me and I just tried to take advantage of them.

“I love playing on this team. I came in here as a transfer and the guys accepted me from day one and made me feel like a real part of things. We’ve got a special thing going on here with our coach-ing staff and our players. They’re the best. I love them. I’ll go to war with them any day.”

FSU safeties Stephen Turner and Manny Ivey helped bolster the Falcons’ staunch defense with second-half interceptions in the red zone Satur-day in the win over the Blue Knights.

Turner, a 6-foot, 215-pound sophomore free safety from Clinton, Md., picked off a pass at the FSU 15 and returned it 85 yards for his first collegiate touchdown with 11:22 left in the third quarter to give the Falcons a 34-14 lead. The 85-yard return is tied for the fourth longest in school history with both Ryland Newman and Dewey McDonald. Mc-Donald is now a backup linebacker with the Se-attle Seahawks in the NFL.

Ivey, a 6-foot, 210-pound strong safety from Rich-mond, Va., recorded his interception on the very next Urbana drive at the FSU goal line and re-turned it 17 yards.

Fairmont’s defense is tops in the MEC in the red zone. Opponents are just 8-of-14 on red zone scor-ing chances against the Falcons (57.1 percent), scoring five touchdowns and kicking three field goals.

The picks were the second of the season for both Turner and Ivey and the 11th of the year for the Falcons, which is tied for the lead in the MEC with Glenville State. They both had one a week earlier in a 16-3 win over Alderson-Broaddus.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Fairmont State scored 20 third-quarter points and forced five second-half turnovers to rally past West Virginia State, 30-20, on Saturday afternoon at Lakin Field at Dickerson Stadium. Following 13 unanswered points by WV State to open the game, freshman wide receiver Andre Hall broke away from a Yellow Jacket defender and took off for a 42-yard touchdown with just 19 sec-onds remaining in the opening quarter. With the score still 13-7 in favor of the Yellow Jackets with just over six min-utes remaining in the second quarter, the Falcons went for a 4th-and-6 at-tempt from the WVSU 40 yard line and were held a yard short on a complete pass from Hibbs to Hall. On the next offensive snap, State signal caller Matt Kinnick hooked up for a 65-yard touch-down strike to Akil Washington, push-ing the Yellow Jackets lead to 20-7. Fairmont State kicker Sam Keil wrapped up the scoring in the opening half by connecting on a 25-yard attempt with under a minute remaining before half-time. It took very little time for the Falcons to cut into the halftime deficit when Ra-keem Darden capped a five-play, 38-yard drive in just 1:14. The drive was aided by a 60-yard kick return by Laurence King and a 40-yard pass over the middle to Hall. Following a three-and-out by WV State, Terrell Charles gave FSU its first lead of the day by capping a nine-play, 71-yard

drive with a six-yard touchdown run. The drive was keyed by three catches for 46 yards from King, another fresh-man FSU receiver that turned in a great performance in his Falcon debut this af-ternoon. Later in the third quarter on a punt by Sam Tucker, the WV State returner muffed the punt at the State 36 and Quincy Redmon recovered to set up the FSU offense in Yellow Jacket territory. On the first offensive snap of the drive, Charles crossed the goal line for the sec-ond time from 30-yards out to open up a 10 point FSU lead (30-20) with 5:04 re-maining in the third. Although the fourth quarter was score-less for both teams, the FSU defense did its job to help close out the victory by forcing turnovers on each of the first three State possessions. The turnovers included a second fumble recovery by Redmon, an interception by Antonio Harris and a fumble recovery by Eman-uel Ivey. FSU forced its fourth turnover of the fourth quarter with just over a minute remaining when Calvin Pringles picked-off Kinnick. Senior quarterback Cooper Hibbs com-pleted 26-of-40 pass attempts for 328 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Hibbs also threw a first half intercep-tion. Hall opened his FSU career with 11 catch-es for 178 yards and the opening score of the day for the Falcons. King pulled in eight receptions for 98 yards on the

afternoon. Senior Fabian Guerra also chipped in three receptions for 33 yards in the victory. After managing just nine carries for 23 yards in the opening half, Charles led the FSU rushing attack with 114 yards on 25 carries, crossing the goal line twice. In addition to forcing five turnovers on the afternoon, the FSU defense was led by Stephen Turner and Jerry Iweh with eight tackles apiece. Redmon was a force on the FSU defensive line with five tack-les, two fumble recoveries, a sack and a pass break-up. Marco Jones also had a big day at the opposite defensive end spot, finishing with six tackles, a sack, two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. Josh Ballard recorded the third sack of the day for the FSU defense. Kinnick connected on 22-of-38 pass at-tempts for 345 yards and two touch-downs. Kinnick also threw a pair of in-terceptions. Quinton Gray was on the receiving end of nine passes for 87 yards and Washington add five receptions for 142 yards, aided by a 65-yard touchdown reception. Jay Terry and Mitchell Rowell each re-corded 10 tackles to lead the State de-fense on the afternoon. Ayinde Warren forced the only Yellow Jacket turnover by intercepting Hibbs in the opening half. FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State se-niors Cooper Hibbs and Fabian Guerra hooked up for three touchdowns in the opening half as the Falcons blanked Concord, 28-0, on Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field. The victory, Fairmont’s first over Con-cord since a 27-8 win during the 2008 season, helped the Falcons improve to 2-0 on the season. The last time FSU shutout Concord was in 2007, a 17-0 win at Duvall-Rosier Field. Ironically, that 17-0 victory was the last win for FSU over Concord at home. The Mountain Lions fell to 1-1 on the season. Guerra finished the afternoon with 11 catches for 175 yards and three touch-downs, marking the first multiple touch-down game in his Fairmont State career. Laurence King also turned in a solid performance in the FSU passing game, totaling eight catches for 80 yards and gaining 18 yards on a reverse. Hibbs was nearly flawless on the after-noon leading the FSU offense, complet-

ing 25-of-31 passes for 297 yards. Hibbs threw touchdown passes of nine, 24 and 37 yards to Guerra. FSU turned in a balance attack offen-sively, totaling 443 yards of total offense – including 297 through the air and 146 on the ground. Terrell Charles recorded his second-consecutive 100-yard rush-ing performance, racking up 104 yards on 16 carries in the victory. Charles tal-lied 101 yards on 15 carries in the open-ing half. Fairmont State’s defense shutout Con-cord, limiting the Mountain Lions to just 232 yards of total offense (including 64 on the ground). The Falcons also forced two turnovers, including a 68-yard pick-six by Trevon Shorts that provided the only points of the second half. Zack Hoover also picked-off Concord quarter-back Brian Novak in the victory. As a team, the Falcons broke-up 10 pass-es in the win, led by two apiece from Emanuel Ivey and Jacob Jean-Charles. Ivey also led the FSU defense with a

team-high six tackles in the victory. In addition to outgaining the Moun-tain Lions by a 443-232 margin, FSU also dominated time of possession by pos-sessing the ball for over 37 minutes in the victory. The Falcons were once again heavily pentalized, being called for 18 accepted penalties for 185 yards. CU was flagged just three times for 25 yards. Novak led the CU offense by completing 21-of-45 passes for 168 yards. Novak also threw a pair of interceptions. Nick Loftin was on the receiving end of five passes for 32 yards for the ‘Lions. Concord’s defense was led by Darryl Johnson with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- Terrell Charles scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to help Fairmont State rally past West Liberty, 21-20, on Thursday night in the Mountain East Conference Game of the Week. WLU led 20-7 entering the fourth quarter of play. With the win, Fairmont State improves to 3-0 for the first time since 1981. That season FSU began the year 6-0 and fin-ished the season with a 9-2 mark. West Liberty falls for the third time this sea-son and is now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the league. FSU cut the West Liberty lead to 20-14 at the 11:42 mark of the fourth quarter when Charles crossed the goal line from four-yards out. The drive was set up by a 13-yard punt return by Andre Hall and two 19-yard receptions, one from Cooper Hibbs to Fabian Guerra and the other from Hibbs to Brandon Boyd. On the following WLU possession, Hill-topper quarterback Brenton Colabella was sacked by Fairmont’s Josh Ballard on third down to force a punt. However, FSU went three-and-out on the ensuing possession and the Falcons settled for a Samuel Tucker punt that was downed at the WLU 20.

After the Hilltoppers picked up a first down and advanced to the WLU 34, Marcus Porter ripped the ball loose from Hilltopper running back Jeremiah Ortiz and the ball was recovered by Dalton In-man at the West Liberty 37-yard line. Five plays later, Charles took a hand-off 10 yards for the game-winning FSU score, capping a five-play, 37-yard pos-session. FSU kicker Sam Keil knocked through the extra point to put FSU out in front, 21-20. On West Liberty’s final possession, Co-labella was sacked on third-down by Quincy Redmon before being intercept-ed by Jerry Iweh on 4th-and-18. FSU quarterback Cooper Hibbs finished the day 27-of-40 for 273 yards and a score. Hibbs also threw an uncharac-teristic three interceptions in the game. Charles finished the day with 85 yards on 22 carries, scoring both fourth quar-ter touchdowns. Guerra had another breakout perfor-mance for FSU this evening, pulling-in eight receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown, his fourth score in the last two games.

Porter had a monster performance for the FSU defense, recording 14 total tack-les (nine solo) and forcing a fumble. Redmon also had a big day on defense, recording nine total tackles and three sacks. Emanuel Ivey and Iweh each chipped in seven tackles apiece. Colabella finished the day 6-of-20 for 121 yards and a pair of scores after replac-ing starting quarterback Dakota Con-well because of injury early in the first quarter. WLU receiver Dan Monteroso hauled in four catches for 118 yards and two scores for the WLU offense. West Liberty’s defense was led by Logan Deri with nine solo stops and an inter-ception. Despite trailing for a majority of the evening, the Falcons outgained West Liberty, 373-285, in the victory. FSU once again had over 100-yards in penalties, being flagged 13 times for 117 yards. FSU was called for eight penalties for 95 yards in the opening half of play.

the third quarter. Rakeem Darden also crossed the goal line for the second-straight game, totaling 35 yards on six carries and scoring a touchdown.

The FSU offense rolled up 533 yards of total offense in the victory, including 309 yards through the air. After giving up touchdowns on the first two Urbana possessions of the game, the FSU defense tightened-up, allow-ing just 197 yards and intercepting three passes the remainder of the game, al-lowing zero points in the final three quarters of play. Marcus Porter recorded a team-high six tackles in the FSU victory. Demonne Cox, Arnold Roots, Antonio Harris and Stephen Turner each chipped in four tackles apiece. Turner, Emanuel Ivey and Michael Porter each picked-off passes for the FSU defense and Quincy Red-mon recorded a sack. Redmon has now recorded a sack in seven of the last eight games. With the score tied at 14-14 early in the second quarter, Hibbs and Guerra gave the Falcons the lead for good on a 13-yard pass-and-catch over the middle. Sam Keil, last week’s MEC Player of the Week, also converted on a 29- and 39-yard field goal in the second quarter to send the Falcons to the locker room leading 27-14.

With Urbana threatening at the FSU 13 early in the third quarter, Turner picked-off a pass and returned it 85-yards for the score, putting the Falcons in front 34-14 with 11:22 remaining in the third quarter. FSU added to its lead late in the third when Oliver took a handoff 61 yards to put FSU in front by a score of 41-14. FSU added one more score in the fourth when freshman receiver Dana Jackson hauled in a 37-yard touchdown strike from Crews-Naylor, scoring a touch-down on his first-ever collegiate recep-tion. Tajuan Green led Urbana in both pass-ing and rushing, completing 10-of-22 pass attempts for 131 yards and added 42 yards on 10 carries on the ground. Receiver Larry Southall led the Blue Knights with five receptions for 73 yards. Josh Dillard and Duray Hall each racked up double-digit tackles for the Blue Knights, recording 14 and 13, respective-ly. Dillard also picked off a pass for the Urbana defense. The Falcons will return to action next Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Bobcats.
