Where is it located?
Spread across an area of 5.1 sq. km, Jaisalmer is
situated near the border of India and Pakistan in West
Rajasthan. Predominantly a desert region, it attracts
tourists with its rich cultural heritage.

Places of interest in Jaisalmer
Akal: A stunning fossil park of a 180 million year old
forest, this bare hillside of mica, red and yellow stone
resembles an army frozen in its tracks with fear.
Excursion to Khuru Village: Located 45 km to the
east of Jaisalmer is a quaint village with clusters of
thatch roof houses and people dressed in traditional
attire. The village is surrounded by high rolling sand
dunes for miles together where you can enjoy a
memorable camel ride or camel safari.
Folklore Museum: If you wish to understand the
culture of Jaisalmer through the ages, you can pay a
visit to the Lok Sanskritik Sangrahalaya or the
Museum of Folk Culture situated on the bank of
Gadsisar.
Gadsisar Lake: This rainwater fed reservoir, was
built in 1156 AD and later rebuilt in 1367AD by
Maharwal Garsisingh. Until 1965, it was the city’s only
water supply. Along the lakeshore and on the islands,
are several little temples and cenotaphs. You can also
spot many beautiful birds here.
Jaisalmer Fort: Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 and
is the second oldest in Rajasthan. 250 ft tall and
reinforced by an imposing crenellated sandstone wall
30 feet high, it has 99 bastions, 92 of which were built
between 1633 and 1647. The fort is also known as the
Golden Fort for its amber hue, attracting tourists from
the world over. Almost a quarter of present day
Jaisalmer lies inside the complex of this massive fort.

Jaisalmer is named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer is sometimes called the ‘Golden City of India’ because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in most of the city’s architecture gives a yellowish-gold tinge to the city and its surrounding area.
