Following a recent Abbotsford Heat practice, defenceman T.J. Brodie was quietly conduct-

ing an interview outside the locker room when his concentration was broken by teammate Jon Rheault’s best impression of a pro wrestling announcer.

“I’m Jon Rheault,” he growled, glaring into a video camera stationed just down the hallway. “Let’s make some noise! Go Heat go!”

Rheault was taping a promo to be played on the jumbotron at a future Heat

home game, and his over-the-top deliv-ery had Brodie cackling with laughter.

“I have a blast with that stuff,” Rheault said with a grin afterward. “Obviously I know I’m not good at it or anything, and I know it’s going to take me a million takes to get one thing right. But it’s fun.”

Fun has been the operative word for Rheault of late. After a painfully slow start to the season, the 24-year-old right winger racked up 14 points during a 15-game span bridging January and February.

That spurt of production which more than doubled Rheault’s season output – he’d registered just 12 points over his rst 38 games.

The early slump was particularly baf- ing in light of Rheault’s tremendous performances in last season’s AHL playoffs and during the 2010-11 pre-season. He led the Heat with six goals in 13 post-season games last spring, and appeared poised to build on that after excelling at a prospects’ tournament and at Calgary Flames training camp in

September.“It was tough,” Rheault said, re ecting

on his early struggles. “I knew I was ca-pable of more, and it stinks that it took this long for it to happen.

“I could feel it coming, but I couldn’t really put the games together. I only had sections of games where I felt I was playing really well, getting chances.

“But right now, I feel so con dent.”Heat head coach Jim Playfair says

that the speedy Rheault has “a lot of

After a slow start to the season, Abbotsford Heat right winger Jon Rheault (left) has found his form. He recently racked up 14 points in 15 games to more than double his season output.

THE

BENCHFinding consistency on road

In each edition of the Abbotsford News's FACEOFF magazine, beat reporter Dan Kinvig chats with

head coach Jim Playfair about the state of the team. For future editions of FACEOFF, fans are invited to pose their own questions for Playfair. Submit your questions for con-sideration via email to [email protected], or via Twitter to @dankinvigsports. We spoke with Playfair prior to the Heat's Feb. 18-19 set against the Oklahoma City Barons.

Q After three weeks on the road, you've had the luxury of practice time this week. What does that mean to the team's development as you get into the stretch run?

A "It allows us to work on details. We gave the players a couple days off to get some bumps and bruises healed up, and we just wanted to get some defensive zone stuff organized."

Q The team looked very con dent in what they were doing offensively against the Toronto Marlies last weekend (a two-game sweep Feb. 11-12). Is it just a matter of the guys being con dent and comfortable

within the system?

A "I think when you get a long road trip, when you play seven games in nine nights, your team nds out about the consistency of just playing together as a team. We were able to do some

things consistently. I thought we got pucks out of our own end well. I thought we got pucks into the of-fensive zone well. I thought we were stronger in battles. It really helped us to become a consistent team."

Q This is the second year in a row where your team has really found its identity on a long road trip, isn't it?

A "You know what, it's a situation when you get out there where you try to break it down into smaller portions. If you look at the big picture of a 10-game road trip, it can get a bit over-whelming. On the road, we met with the team and explained that without practice time, it's going to be a lot of videotape work to learn and get better. I thought they did a really good job of paying attention to that and doing that."

Q Looking at your goals for and goals against (131-150 as of press deadline) in relation to your win-loss record (27-22-2-5), your team has really made the most of what you've got, haven't you?

A "Yeah, we have. Leland Irving has been really good lately. We've got a great record in one-goal games (18-5-7), which is impressive. For me, we're still trying to gure out how to score more goals. We're 29th in the league in goal-scoring, so it's something we want to pay attention to. Overall, we know what we are – we're a team that has to compete really hard every night to have a chance, and that's what we want to do."

We’ve got a great record in one-goal games, which is impressive.

Q You’re from Toronto. What’s the thing you miss most about your hometown when you’re away?

A “My family. I’ve got two brothers I’m super close with. They both play hockey. One’s with the Erie Otters in the OHL (Adam), and the other is in the ECHL in the L.A. Kings’ system (Michael). I miss spending time with them.”

Q What’s your perfect day in the off-season?

A “The perfect day is going up to my buddy’s cottage, waking up late, going for a round of golf, and then a barbecue at night.”

Q If you weren’t a pro hockey player, which line of work would you be in?

A “I don’t know. There’s a bunch of stuff that seems really, really interesting. I’m interested in real estate – that seems really cool – and anything along the lines of personal training or re ghting.”

Q Who’s the most famous person in your cellphone?

A “The most famous person my cell phone is probably Mikael Backlund (former Heat forward, current Calgary Flame). Actually, you know what, it’s probably my uncle Mike Gillis (Vancouver Canucks general manager).”

Q What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?

A “When I was really young, my dad paid me for a week to organize le folders in a back room of his of ce building. It was awful. It was just painful – it was dusty, I was sneezing. It was a bad week.”

Q What’s the best trash-talk line you’ve heard on the ice?

A “When I was really young, I had a lisp, and people used to make fun of that when I was on the ice. That really used to get me going. I didn’t even have a good comeback. All my comebacks I’d be lisping back at them, so they’d just make fun of me even more.”

Q Who’s got the worst fashion sense on this Abbotsford Heat team?

A “I think a lot of people might say me. I just wear goofy stuff. I have lots of Super Mario and Ninja Turtles T-shirts and stuff like that. The older guys give me a hard time sometimes.”

At the NHL level, most goalies scout oppplayers’ shootout tendencies. That’s not aof Irving’s preparation at this point.

“I like to go in fresh, without thinking abothing,” he said. “If I’m thinking the shooterto do a certain move and he totally changehe might catch me off-guard. If I’m being pand waiting for him to make a move, just tthe puck, that gives me the best chance.”

At the end of a scoreless overtime, mentand physical readiness are Irving’s primarycerns heading into the shootout.

“I’m just trying to stay loose,” he said. “Aof the game, sometimes you can tend to tia little, so I get stretched out and ready to

"Our regular guys in the shootouts, they know what they're doing. But I've fi gured omoves, so it's a little hard for them to scortice."

When an opposing shooter is bearing down on him, Irving says the most important thing is to let the other player make the fi rst move.

“I just want to get out and be aggressive, cut down the angle so he doesn’t have a lot to shoot at,” he said. “I’m expecting a deke, but shot is always in the back of my mind.”

The ever-humble Irving fi nishes his shootout analysis the same way he began it – by giving props to his teammates. The credit is well-deserved, as the Heat boast three of the AHL’s top four play-ers in shootout goals – Matt Keith, Jon Rheault and Greg Nemisz.

“There’s no way I’d have as many shootout wins if they didn’t score at the other end,” Irving pointed out. “It’s great to know that if I hold the other team to one or two, we have a great chance to win.”

upside,” as evidenced by his recent streak of productive play, but consistency is his major area for growth.

“I think he plays a great game and then a good game,” Playfair said. “I’d like to see more consistent great games out of him, because I think he’s capable of it.”

Rheault doesn’t dispute the boss’s analysis. Consistency, though, is a dif- cult attribute for young pros to learn.

“A lot of it, I think, has to do with how I start a game,” Rheault said. “If I don’t start the way I want to, I can sometimes let that interfere with my mental game.

“I’ve got to learn how to bench anything that’s going wrong and forget about it. Every shift is a new opportu-nity to start over.”

As Rheault has heated up, so too has his team. The 2010-11 edition of the Heat won’t be mistaken for the 1980s-era Edmonton Oilers in terms of scoring prowess, but they’re starting to show more con dence offensively while maintain-ing their attention to defensive detail. Six wins in eight games, heading into last weekend’s set against the Oklahoma City Barons, has been the upshot.

“It’s just a lot of people playing good hockey at the same time and feeding off each other,” Rheault ex-

plained. “One line gets going, and the next line says, ‘We can do that too.’

“It’s con dence not only in yourself, but in each other.”

Even during his less-productive games, Rheault has been able to make a contribution in the shootout. He’s

tied with teammate Matt Keith for the AHL lead with seven goals in the skills competition (7-for-15 success rate), and has three shootout game-winners.

As for his recent individual suc-cess, Rheault said it’s been a product of focusing on breaking the game down mentally and playing to his strengths – speed and physical-ity – as opposed to putting pressure on himself to generate goals and assists.

“When you get con dent, you can pretty much do what you want,” he said. “I’m starting to get in that same mental state I was in at the end of last year.

“It’s tough to describe. You’re very con dent in every move that you’re making – the second a though comes into your head, you’re trusting it. When things are going wrong, you start to analyze each thought. I’ve been able to settle down and make plays.”

Confi dence is key for Rheault, Heat

Every shift is a new opportunity to start over.

Q What's your favourite thing about coming to a Heat game?

A "The excitement! It's so much fun, especially when the Heat are on re. When the home team is scoring, it's amazing."

Q I understand you brought your daughter to a game for the rst time last week. What did she think?

A "She liked it, but it was sometimes a little loud for her because she's only three years old. But she had a lot of fun."

Q Who's your favourite player on the Heat?

A "Right now there's so many guys playing well, but I'd have to say it's Keith Seabrook. I just like the way he plays. Also, Leland Irving – he's just on re right now. I love watching him. Last week against Toronto he made some amazing saves. I'm also a big fan of Quintin Laing."

Q How do you support the Heat when you're away from the rink?

A "I listen to games on the radio, and I'm always checking out the website."
