The Centre of Studies of Russian Art - CSAR of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice was officially inaugurated on 6 March 2011, in the framework of the celebrations for the Year of Russian Culture and Language in Italy and the Year of Italian Culture and Language in Russia. The solemn ceremony took place at Ca’ Foscari’s main building, in the presence of Svetlana Medvedeva, wife of Dmitrij Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation from 2008 to 2012, of the Russian Ministry of Culture Alexander Avdeev, of the Russian ambassador in Italy Alexey Meshkov, of Tatiana Shumova, Director of the Direction of International Programs, of Ca’ Foscari’s rector Carlo Carraro, and of numerous national civil authorities.

/CSAR

CSAR is promoted by Ca’ Foscari and by the Direction of International Programs of the Russian Federation, with the support of the Ministries of Culture and of Foreign Affairs. It is the first research centre in Italy whose aims are the systematic study, enhancement, and promotion of Russia’s extraordinary cultural and historical heritage. The practical articulations of this experience – past and present art and culture, as well as the Russian musical, theatrical and cinematic tradition – are among the main objectives of the Centre. Characterised from the very beginning by highly qualified international partnerships, CSAR aims to become a permanent place of encounters and exchange, open to students, teaching staff, and anyone interested in studying the great accomplishments of the Russian civilisation throughout the centuries. The Centre’s activities include temporary and permanent laboratories, exhibitions, international conferences, film screenings and other performances, scientific publications, the cataloguing of art collections and the promotion of cultural activities, mostly addressed to young generations. The Centre’s international and multi-disciplinary calling reflects the most authoritative Russian cultural

current emerging trends. These criteria could be verified on the occasion of important exhibitions (“Dmitri Prigov: Dmitri Prigov”, 2011, with the Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg; “MOCKBA Underground”, 2012; “Lost in translation”, 2013, with

approaches and is translated into the composition of its scientific committee, which includes qualified experts from a variety of disciplines: art historians, art critics, curators, Slavistics and Russian Art scholars from universities and museums worldwide, including Italy, Russia, the United States, and Germany. CSAR promotes its scientific programs among Italian and Russian companies, so as to attract their support. Public and private companies and institutions can become “Friends of the CSAR” and are involved in the Centre’s initiatives.

The CSAR’s location in Venice is not irrelevant. To the contrary, it determines the Centre’s ambition to become a platform between two countries and two cultures in the international and modern context provided by Venice. Its actions are also aimed at establishing original criteria of cultural exchange. In addition to traditional studies, current research, and cultural communication, these criteria also rely on multi-disciplinarity, recent developments in ICT technologies, multimedia and new strategies of fruition of the artistic and cultural heritage, through a rigorous and scientific approach to recent history, with a particular focus on

the MMOMA; “Viktor Popkov”, 2014, with ROSIZO), of international conferences (e.g., on Pavel Florenskij, 2012, and on Jurij Lotman, 2013), and of collaborations with the programs of major Russian cultural institutions.
