Challenge Sailcloth

One of the widest ranges of woven sailcloth available today is engineered by Bob Bainbridge, part of the Howe and Bainbridge weaving Dynasty and Terry Cronburg probably the two most innovative sailcloth designers in the world.

There is a product available for every application from cost effective Cruising Cloth, through Blue Water Sailing to Grand Prix Racing such as the Volvo Round the World Race.

Where there are unusual demands, Challenge are capable of designing and producing special fabrics to cater for unique circumstances.

The Application Chart is intended for use as a guide only, as the experienced Sailmaker will judge for himself whether a different weight or construction of sailcloth should be used for a particular application.

The Chart is divided into FOUR CATEGORIES OF USE: ● Performance Quality Cruise Fabrics, • High Quality Cruise and Club Race Fabrics • Premier Cruise and Grand Prix Race Fabrics • Radial Fabrics

It incorporates the main Challenge woven products: • Performance Cruise, • Hi Modulus Low Aspect • Hi Modulus High Aspect (also Hi Modulus Soft) • Marblehead • High Aspect • Radial Weaves

Other Challenge products include: • 3.8 oz Colours • Hi Modulus Egyptian Cream ● Hi Modulus Tan ● Tall Ships Fabrics ● Kevlar Patch ● A wide range of spinnaker fabrics

• Lowest bias stretch to resist higher bias loadings of big mid-girths in lower aspect sails

• Highest fill count, tightest weave for best possible bias stability• More even crimp, where yarns grab each other means lower

bias stretch• Bias stability is better in even denier weaves than when there

is large disparity between warp and fill• Larger warp yarn and smaller fill yarn than high aspect fabrics

By Bainbridge & Cronburg Low Aspect Weave Concept

• Large fill yarn to counter high leech loadings in tall, thin sails• High “sley”, that is high count of warp yarns• Warp yarns touch each other, creating tunnels that

encapsulate the fill yarn• High fill count, for best possible bias stability in a fabric with

large disparity in warp and fill yarn size• High tenacity yarns in both directions

Woven on the most modern looms in World

Fabric Properties• New yarn, combined with new constructions produce best

cruising weaves• Woven on Next Generation, Newest Design Looms• Low aspect weaves in light and medium weights require less

resin to hold shape during repeated use than higher aspect fabrics

• Durability is maximised by high mass warp yarns in weights over 7oz, which provide resistance to degradation from Ultra-violet rays, resistance to tear, and abrasion

• Very large 500 denier warp yarns in 8.68, 9.68 and 11.18 make these fabrics suitable for use in sails which see highest UV exposure and abrasion

The Best Blue Water Fabric AvailableFabric Properties• New yarn, combined with new constructions produce best

cruising weaves• Marblehead Weaves use the best yarns in warp and fill: 1W70

and DuPont Type 52 Dacron. Other fabrics use little or none of these.

• 5.77, 6.77, 8.77, 9.77, 10.77, 11.77 use 100 percent Dacron 52 or Honeywell 1W70

• Marbleheads are the most tightly woven fabrics in the world• For use in highest quality mainsails of 2.5/1 aspect ratio or less• In light to medium weights, Marblehead uses close to even

denier ratios: 1/1.5. In heavier weights, fill yarns become gradually larger to accommodate more highly loaded sails. The result is more even crimp, so yarns lock onto each other, and rely more on weave tightness than resin for bias durability

• Marblehead weaves require half the resin to achieve a particular bias spec than most high aspect fabrics

Marblehead WeavesWarp-Oriented Using Dacron 1W70 Fabric Properties• Radial weaves use very high warp counts to achieve warp

strength. Radial weaves have substantially more yarn in the warp than in the fill

• Balanced construction offers best bias resistance, and stability without puckering

• Lightweight fabrics are proportionately stronger on the warp than heavier weights. This is because they have lighter fill yarns: During weaving the warp is pulled through the loom with a very high tension. This tension bends thin fill yarns, leaving warp yarns with lower crimp. But it is unable to bend heavy fills, leaving more warp crimp, resulting in higher stretch under load

The cruising cloth for traditional and classic craft with the authentic look and feel of canvas

• Spun Polyester yarns in both warp and weft• Colouration system imparts UV protection• Anti-soil and water repellent finish• Range of 5 different weights• Authentic canvas feel• Soft handle, easy to use• Superior durability• Rot proof and water repellent

Clipper Canvas is the only stable polyester cloth in the world designed specifically for traditional and classic sails. It is of balanced fabric construction.

Advisory Note:To maintain the authentic feel of canvas, spun polyester as opposed to continuous filament (Dacron®) is used. A feature of spun polyester, is a greater level of yarn and fabric irregularities. The customer must accept this as a natural characteristic of this authentic canvas product. Clipper Canvas can also be subject to occasional colour variation due to the traditional processes employed.

Challenge Spinnaker Fabrics

FABRIC PROPERTIES

• Challenge Stabilised Finish adds virtually no weight

• As a result, Fibermax Nylon has maximum number of fibres / weight.

• Fibermax has proven “The most durable nylon in the World” by its selection by Global Challenge, Volvo, The Race and many more.

• As with Stabilised Dacron Finish, it is coupled with high density constructions.

• Excellent seamsticking and printing: Many sailmakers seamstick Fibermax 44 radials without sewing.

• Names are approximate weights.

• Challenge invented the first 210 denier “Volvo” Mega-Fabric. Now we introduce a 420 denier fabric, Fibermax184. Both helped power ABM-AMRO 1 to victory in the Volvo Open 70.

Stabilised Nylon Explained

THE RESULT:

• Full resin impregnation means better durability.

• Porosity is higher than coated fabrics: no film on the surface.

• No coating means more fibres can be woven for the same weight: Higher strength, lower stretch (depending upon firmness.)

The fabric is dipped through a solution of dissolved resin. The resin is then cured at high temperature.

Very small resin particles are embedded in the weave, restricting its stretch. The resin weight add-on is so slight, it is nearly undetectable.

Coated Nylon Finishes

THE RESULT:

• A cohesive film seals the fabric, encapsulating the yarns.

• Coated fabrics have zero porosity, and arguably better performance because no wind passes through.

• Coated fabrics are easier to cut, as they are pulled down on vaccum tables better and are flatter for cutting.

Lightweight, small fibre mass spinnaker fabrics must be coated to reduce porosity. Solid, high viscosity (thick) Urethane coating is pumped onto the fabric, and “squeegeed” by a coating blade to control the weight and thickness.
