2-0837 Capriccio Italien, Op. 45, Part 1. 7chaikovsky

A N interesting glimpse of Tchaikovsky composing this brilliant and genial Capriccio Italien is to be found in his letters. He had

come from the Russian winter to Florence, where the Southern

spring was already stirring. Opposite his rooms in the lovely city on the Arno was a cavalry barracks from which the bugle calls suggested the fanfares with which the piece begins. Down in the streets the gay Florentine crowd and its animation stamped upon the composer's mind

a picture which inspired him to depict the scene in music. The

opening phrases for trumpet recall the military pageant, then comes a

vivacious movement, the lively saltarello rhythm of which evidently

represents the throng in the streets of the famous city, while the melody which follows is in the style of a popular folk-song. From these ideas, and with masterly instrumentation, the composer has woven a

work of which the Albert Hall Orchestra, under Landon Ronald,

has made a wonderful record. It is, indeed, one of the finest

orchestral numbers we have ever issued. (Speed 79)

Orphee aux Enfers-Overture Offenbach Published by Lafleur & Sons.

1 "Miniature Suite," No. III (Scene du hal) Eric Coates Published by Boosey & Co.

T RUE to its reputation the Queen's Hall Light Orchestra has

produced yet another superb record of delicious sparkling music, played with all the artistic perfection of tone, technique

and expression for which this famous body of players is so noted. The Offenbach overture, from one of the most delightful of his light operas- the successful revival of which, a few years ago at His Majesty's, will be remembered---is full of gay melody and piquant rhythm. In its dash and swing the music is typical of the genius of one of the greatest comic-opera composers the world has ever known. The charming little piece by Eric Coates, one of the cleverest young English

composers (himself the leading viola player of the orchestra, and therefore actually taking a prominent part in the recording of his own music), is equally taking. The lively introduction, to which succeeds a graceful waltz melody, and then a dainty measure, in thirds, all suggest cleverly the brilliance and gaiety of the ball-room. (Speeds 79)

C ARUSO in a Neapolitan folk-song-what more delightful record

could the music-lover desire ? For the great operatic tenor sings these popular ballads of his own country--he is a

Neapolitan, of course-with inimitable charm. He realizes perfectly their quaint sentiment and gives to them a miniature dramatic expression that is quite wonderful, while, needless to say, lie sings the music with gorgeous beauty of tone. This record, too, is of a world-famous Neapolitan tune, " O sole mio," a song of life under the Southern sun. Many will recall the melody, especially as it has been used as a waltz in our ball-rooms, but to realize all its beauty you must hear the Caruso record. (Speed 79)

ONE of the most successful of the Beecham operatic productions has been Mozart's " Il Seraglio," the immortal melodies and amusing comedy of which have delighted thousands all aver

the country recently. The comic figure of the Pasha's servant, Osmin (which Mr. Radford plays so capitally), is heard, in this charming air,

gloating over the fate he has in store for the hero and his servant, who are endeavouring to rescue the Pasha's fair captive, beloved of the hero. The merry melody, with its many sly touches of humour, of which Mozart was such a master, and the sparkling accompaniment make the

song quite irresistible, while Mr. Radford sings it with immense spirit. It is, indeed, one of the finest records the popular English basso has

ever produced. (Speed 79)

A VERY beautiful example of a modern English song is this exquisite setting of Tennyson's familiar poem, by one of our most gifted native composers. It has found a place in the

repertoire of most singers, for the softly sensuous melody suggests so perfectly the ecstasy of the magic hour the poet describes in his wonderful love-song. Mme. Kirkby Lunn has made a fine record of the song, singing it with beauty of tone and fervour of expression, the artistic accompaniment by Mr. Percy Pitt adding greatly to the effect.(Speed

08067 Theme and Variations from Trio in A minor, Op. 50, Part I Tchaikovsky

T HE magnificent A minor Trio by Tchaikovsky, in which the three instruments-piano, violin, 'cello-are combined with such masterly effect was dedicated by the composer, " to the

memory of a great artist," and intended as a musical tribute to his friend

and teacher, Nicholas Rubinstein. This act of homage inspired Tchaikovsky to produce a work of the greatest beauty and one remark. able for its technical cleverness. The glorious theme and variations here

recorded form the second movement of the Trio. The exquisite melody

which the piano announces is said to be a reminiscence of a happy day

spent by Tchaikovsky with his friend. Its serenity and beauty are enhanced by its repetition on the violin. Then begin some brilliant

variations, one of which, for the 'cello, is particularly beautiful. Finally, piano and violin join together in repeating the theme. A won- derful performance of the music has been recorded, with Mark Hambourg

at the piano, Marjorie Hayward the violinist and Warwick Evans as 'cellist, these fine artists producing a singularly perfect ensemble.(Speed

A NEW record by such a perfect player as Marie Hall is always sure of a welcome. Her remarkable technique and delicate beauty of tone are quite at their best in this picturesque piece by

Sarasate. In the " Jota Arogonesa" the composer has created, from a popular dance of his native Spain, music that is fascinating alike in melody and rhythm, and admirable for a display of violin virtuosity. Marie Hall, one need scarcely say, makes light of its technical difficulties and plays the piece with the utmost spirit. (Speed 79)

IN no country is the taste for light opera more widespread than in Britain. One may say that light opera is to us what lyric opera is to Italy-it is the form of theatre music which seems to appeal

most generally to the national taste and temperament. If we consider musical comedy as a somewhat humble form of light opera, then one may say that the latter holds our stage very largely.

I do not mean to imply that grand opera is not appreciated or understood in this country ; on the contrary, there is a very large and growing public for it. But light operatic pieces seem peculiarly suited to the average British taste. Perhaps it is because the self-conscious- ness of our national character finds the frank comedy of light opera more in keeping with the conventions and unrealities of the stage, whereas grand opera puts a greater strain upon those dramatic

artificialities.

Moreover, light opera comes as a welcome relief from the mental strain of life that the war brought about. Sparkling melodies and light-hearted lyrics are a real tonic which can make us more ready to face sterner things.

The lover of light opera has a big field to choose from when it

comes to gramophone records. There are not only the pieces at present popular, such as " The Lilac Domino," but the beautiful

works of past generations, which, when revived from time to time nowadays, delight us as much as they did our fathers. First and fore-

most is the glorious French school-Offenbach, with his incomparable

series of oßera-boufle, Auber, Audran, Lecocq, Planquette, Messager,

and others. Then our own exquisite works, headed by the peerless Sullivan, to whom a worthy successor is Edward German, while such composers as Sidney Jones, Howard Talbot and Lionel Monckton have given us many charming pieces of a light character. The list of "His Master's Voice" light-opera records is so extensive that it is only possible to mention a few typical examples, which are given in the programmes printed on the opposite page. Realizing the popularity of light opera, the experiment-already very successful-has been made of issuing, in record form, complete operas, two delightful examples of which are mentioned. 11,NEW BALLAD RECORDS

A SPLENDID record by Carmen Hill is among this month's

ballads. The popular mezzo-soprano has chosen a very

effective number of the late Liza Lehmann. It is a very exquisite

love-song, the words of which are of tender sentiment, and the

music, which matches them perfectly, in the style of an old folk-song.

Most melodious are its phrases, and beautifully sung by the artist.

A quaint, old traditional tune, splendidly recorded by Mr. Ernest

Butcher, may next claim our attention. " Little Bridget Flynn " is

a dainty ditty of a love-lorn youth, graceful and charming in the

melody to which the words are set, and very attractively sung by

this popular artist, who has made a speciality of old folk-tunes, which

he sings most sympathetically.

A record by Miss Phyllis Lett shows off the well-known contralto's

beautiful voice perfectly. The song, with its fanciful theme, has a

broad, stately melody of a type ideally suited to the singer's rich,

smooth tones. The striking close, in which Miss Lett's low notes

are heard with telling effect, should be particularly noted.

The two songs recorded by Hubert Eisdell are well contrasted in

style, and both exceedingly effective as sung by the popular tenor,

who is such an accomplished ballad-singer. "As a Star" is deep

in feeling, while "A lesson in love" is bright and piquant. Both

are very melodious and vocally attractive. (Speed 79)

H ERE is another splendid Lauder record to add to the unique series which the great Scottish comedian has already given to the world. The song in which he is heard has all that large-

hearted humour and genial philosophy that have made him so

universally popular. How delightful is this little story, set to a lively

tune of the kind one knows so well, of the old man's reminiscences of his youth. The " patter " in between the verses of the song is delicious in its deft portraits of the old man wheezing and coughing, but still cheery, as he thinks of his gay past. Such a record is a real tonic, a sure cure for the blues. (Speed 79)

S OME very taking dance music is a feature of the light orchestral records this month. Two very melodious waltzes first must be mentioned, " Youth and Beauty," a very captivating tune for

dancing, a remark which applies equally well to the Riverside Bells," with its picturesque bell effect. Both are excellently recorded by McKee's well-known New York Orchestra, while the Metropolitan Dance Band supplies a merry Fox-trot, very catchy in tune and rhythm. A lively one-step for banjo orchestra is a very pleasing novelty in records, and the medley two-step from the Gaiety success " Going Up," recorded by the Gaiety Orchestra, is one of the best of the dance numbers. This fine theatre orchestra also gives us another selection from the piece in excellent style. Finally, the popular Savoy quartet of banjoists have recorded two bright pieces, in each giving their characteristic orchestral and vocal effects. (Speeds 79)
