times for some operatic selec- tions by this artiste. Her first

choice has fallen on " Salce," the famous aria from " Otello." The simplicity of this melody and the perfect rendition by this superb soprano have, we feel sure, placed yet another 'Vocalion' record in that category of famous things that will live for all time.

! N EGRO 'Spirituals' have come into the musical life

of this country, and have been taken to the heart of those who appreciate that which has a strong human interest and is, at the same time, beautiful. These traditional songs represent the spiritual yearnings of the American Slaves who throughout their servitude, and possibly due to it, preserved a deep religious instinct, and came to express this emotion in a way that to the modem mind is at once pathetic and ingenuous.

Roland Haves came from this stock, his parents having been slaves, and with that exceptional voice which he possesses he gives a rendering of these old religious melodies that is unique. " Go Down ]loses," which proves when analysed to have its inception in an ancient Jewish chant, translated through the negro mentality, is as appealing in its sentiment of wistful longing as it is melodious. " Steal Awav," a story of those slaves who were appealing to their companion: in bondage to go and hear the missionary across the river,is another spiritual which has a most alluring charm.

Lawrence Brown, the negro accompanist, is a nian of much the same antecedents as Roland Haves, and gives to the accompaniments a sympathetic atmosphere. Here is a wonderful record.

C ARRIE TUB], shows us once again her superb art in these two songs. " Buv my Strawberries " is

just a sweet old-world air, rendered with a simplicity and restraint that is in itself a proof of perfect technique, and "The Dancing.Lcsson," is a songfull of florid passages, which reveals her versatility still further. As usual our orchestra has given a very fine accompaniment.

HAYDN M'OOD'S creation is one of those ballads that will appeal to every hearer;

a good story together with a rollicking melody. Malcolm McEachern, with his sonorous voice, and breezy rendition, aided by a rich o_chestral ac- companiment, makes the song a real gern. LIONEL TERTJS Opening with tones like those of a 'Cello, he, by easy stages,

gives us, as it were, music of the whole string family, and the finale is a wonderful example of double stopping. Ethel Ilobday- is always a great accompanist, and never more so than in this class of music.
