Well InjectionIn order to avoid costly downtime due tofreeze-ups of deep water well systems, chemicals such as Methanol are injectedinto each well as a preventive countermeasure. This is a criticalprocess requiring verificationmeasurement — should high-pressure pump systems fail or develop an excessive amount of leakage, it is imperative to know at what point lines will freeze.

Flow Technology’s positive dis-placement flowmeters are an effective answer for high-pressure methanol injection, where detectionof fluid loss resulting from worn internal pump packings is essential. These flowmeters feature a new, patented “boltless” design which is ideally suited for high-pressure applications, such as methanol injection, where process pressures can reach 15,000 psig.

In well injection applications involving corrosion inhibitors, paraffin inhibitors and other concentrated fluids, offshore producers utilize our low flow positive dis-placement flowmeters. Capable of measuringflow rates down to seven gallons per day,they offer a reliable, high-resolution flowsensing solution for low- to high-viscosityliquids.

Flow Technology also provides all of thenecessary electronic components for a complete deep water flow checking system.In methanol service applications, for exam-ple, our flowmeters are typically paired witha magnetic pick-up sensor, and either aloop-powered rate indicator/totalizer housedin a NEMA 7 explosion-proof enclosure, or asmart two-wire rate transmitter.

Valve ActuationMeasuring the flow of hydraulic fluid used insubsea control pods requires the utmost levelof instrument performance. The control podssupply hydraulic fluid which activates valvesat well heads on the ocean floor. In thisprocess, large surges of hydraulic fluid againstvery low flow rates can result in abrupt andrapidly changing flow conditions.

Petroleum producers rely on FlowTechnology’s turbine flowmeters in suchchallenging hydraulic applications. Themeters’ exceptional repeatability provides aprecise baseline “footprint” to monitor theperformance of hydraulic circuits, as well asan accurate total flow reading to verify valveposition. Additionally, their wide dynamicrange ensures adequate sensitivity to identifyleaks, while allowing measurement of the

top flow rate during actuation of the device.By delivering high-resolution flow measure-ment data, Flow Technology’s turbineflowmeters enable early detection of valve-related problems. This eliminates the needto raise well head equipment to the surfacein the event of system failure, and mini-mizes the potential for spilling hydraulicfluid into the environment.

Blowout PreventionIn offshore oil fields, “kicks” or blowoutsdue to downhole pressure surges can resultin an uncontrolled flow of fluids from a well,and may cause serious formation damage.To guard against these events, a BlowoutPreventor (BOP) consisting of a set ofhydraulically-operated valves or rams isplaced at the well opening and is used tosafely shut-in the well.

In this application, Flow Technology’s turbineflowmeters are used for precise sensing ofhydraulic fluid flow during activation of theBOP. Meters monitor flow on the surface at the hydraulic power unit (HPU), and on the sea floor at the BOP. These meters are specifi-cally designed to withstand the extreme waterhammer effect within the hydraulic system, as well as the demanding external environmenton the ocean floor. This equipment providesaccurate flow information which allows leakageor other problems within the hydraulic systemto be detected prior to a catastrophic failure.

The impellers activate a non-intru-sive sensor which generates a pulsed output signal.Each pulse represents a known volume of liquid cap-tured in between the lobes of the impellers. A K-Factor converts the pulses into engineering units for remote data collection and digital display.

Specifically designed for use in low flow applications in the oil and gas industry, ourTrickleMeter® measures flow rates from 0.005 to 0.5 GPM. This innovative meter,which is able to withstand pressures up to 15,000 psig, features a stainless steel caseand carbide shafts.

Specialized Turbine MetersFlow Technology is recognized throughout the oil and gas industry forits ability to develop custom flow measurement systems which meetspecialized application requirements. For example, a “high shock”design was developed for installations such as monitoring BOPactivation where the meter may be subjected to extreme hydraulicshock loading. This design enables the turbine meter to withstandthe water hammer effect without sustaining damage. Variousother mechanical configurations, including manifold housingsand meters with SAE Code 62 end fittings, have been utilized as theapplications require.

Several different electronic packages have been developed for use inboth surface and subsea applications. Watertight packages are

available to house a standard pick-off with a low level output,an amplified pick-off with a square-wave pulse output, andlinearizing electronics that provide a linear output of±0.1% throughout the 100:1 dynamic range of the meterwith a frequency and analog output. These subseapackages also have the flexibility to utilize variousconnector brands, such as SeaCon, D.G.
