The ArrangerJanice L. McAllister, graduate of the University of Utah, is a co-author of the

Kjos publications Strings Extraordinaire!, Holidays Extraordinaire!, More Strings Extraordinaire!, Bon Voyage! Music of Russia and Bon Voyage! Music of Canada. She is part of the award-winning orchestra teaching team in the Logan City School District as well as a private teacher of violin, viola, and cello. She has performed with the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra, Camerata Werdenfels in Garmisch, Germany, Classical Music Festival Orchestra in Eisenstadt, Austria, the Cache Chamber, Cache Symphony, and the American Festival Orchestras. Ms. McAllister has served as a frequent faculty member of the Utah State University Summer Music Clinic, presenter at Music Educator’s Conferences, string judge and clinician. She was named “Secondary Teacher of the Year” in 1998 by the Utah Chapter of the ASTA and honored by the Utah Music Educators Association with their “Superior Accomplishment Award” for the 2002-2003 year. She

is a past president of the Utah State Chapter of ASTA and was selected to be a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program for 2006.

She and her husband Byron reside in Logan, Utah, and are the parents of four grown children, all of them string musicians.

The ArrangementThe tune for Sing Noel dates back to the Renaissance (1450–1599). This traditional French carol from 15th-

century Burgundy is one of the oldest European examples of a Christmas carol. “Noël Nouvelet” (the original French title) has been translated into many languages, including the English songs “Christmas Comes Anew” and “Sing We Now of Christmas.”

The singing during the first four measures of the piece establishes the cheerful mood of Sing Noel, and the final shout (m. 78), punctuated by bows pointing upward in unison, reaffirms that joy in conclusion. Polyphony was often used in early music: we get a taste of this technique with the round beginning at m. 24. The use of parallel 4ths and 5ths plus the repeated triplets of the cello, bass, and drum add a drone-like sound reminiscent of the Renaissance.

Music was an essential part of the civic, religious, and courtly life of this time period. Since the Middle Ages, traveling musicians brought music to town squares all over Europe. Music provided much of the entertainment in the lives of the townsfolk, and the Christmas story was a favorite topic in music of the time. Sing Noel transports us back to those days of long ago.
