2016 SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT NEWSLETTER

NOW EVERY FOUR WEEKS

Denver Residents can now put large items out every four weeks instead of every six. The City will no longer provide Large Item Pickup or Cart Overflow Service; instead every home will receive Extra Trash Service for large items and materials that do not fit in trash carts.

To make this possible, the pickup areas have changed significantly. Please pay very close attention to the map and schedule on page 2 of this newsletter. Or better yet, take advantage of the new electronic service reminders that are explained on page 3.

Extra Trash Service is designed to help residents dispose of large items from their homes like couches, mattresses, and branches, and any extra trash bags that may not fit in their trash cart. A maximum of 5 large items and 10 bags of trash will be collected per home per Extra Trash collection.

EXTRA TRASH SERVICE

Starting in January 2016, Denver will replace the Large Item Pickup Program and Cart Overflow Program

with the NEW Extra Trash Service for all homes. This service improvement is part of Solid Waste Management’s

plan to help keep our neighborhoods clean as we transition toward Citywide cart-based trash service.

tarting in January, the Denver Composts program will add one more route and then two more routes will be added in the Summer of 2016. This means the program will be accessible to more

neighborhoods and more participants than ever before.

The Denver Composts program is a fee-based service that collects residentially generated organic materials like yard debris, food and non-recyclable paper. These materials are collected weekly and taken to a commercial composting facility that turns these materials into a soil amendment known as compost.

Organic material is the single largest item that is thrown away by Denver households and accounts for more than 50 percent of what is taken to the landfill. Residents participating in the compost program have reported that with recycling and composting, they have been able to reduce the amount of trash they throw away by 50 to 75 percent.

TRASH CART SERVICE UPDATE

In 2014 and 2015, the City of Denver transitioned about 47,000 homes from dumpster and manual trash service to cart-based trash collection services. There are now more than 104,000 homes citywide receiving cart-based trash collection service.

Standardizing trash service is a key recommendation of the “2010 Master Plan for Managing Waste in the Mile High City” to ensure equity of service, improve efficiency, drive sustainability and improve the cleanliness of our neighborhoods.

In 2016 another 30,000 homes will receive trash carts. Check out the map at DenverGov.org/SolidWastePlan to see where trash carts will be delivered. Delivery of trash carts does not begin until summer 2016.

Questions about trash carts and how the service works? Check out our FAQ’s at DenverGov.org/SolidWastePlan to learn more.

RIGHT SIZE YOUR NEW TRASH CARTGET A SMALLER TRASH CART TO SAVE SPACE

As Denver Solid Waste Management continues to transition neighborhoods to cart-based trash service, residents are encouraged to start thinking about the size of trash cart their family may need. Starting in 2016 the standard issue cart will be the 65-gallon trash cart.

Each home has the opportunity to opt into the larger cart or the smaller cart.

PROGRAM DETAILS Trash collection will be weekly and your trash will need to fit inside the black trash cart. Extra trash will be collected every four weeks.

RECYCLE AND COMPOSTSolid Waste Management also offers 95-gallon and 65-gallon recycle and compost carts.

To order a smaller or larger cart please call 311.

Solid Waste Management and other utilities use the public right-of-way (streets and alleys) to provide services to your home and neighborhood. To ensure access for these service providers, Denver property owners are responsible for pruning trees and vegetation.

1. Tree branches that extend over the street or alley must be a minimum of 13.5 feet above ground.

2. Vegetation extending off of your property into the street or alley must be pruned back to your property line.

3. Vegetation should be pruned so it does not block traffic visibility.
