External Data Validation Tammy Morgan National TQIP Educator Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Annual Scientific Meeting and Training 2012
Why TQIP External Validation?
• Reinforce data validation as a national standard
• Identify educational needs
• Validate accuracy of data as it translates into reports
• Increase confidence levels of facility reports All of the above elements added together, ensure that your data driven performance, is accurate, and the changes you make are based on solid valid data
How confident are you…..??
ACS Criteria: Level I, II & III Trauma Hospitals
What we’ve learned about the centers…
• Staffing • Training • Coding
• Missing data • Misinterpreted data definition
Staffing
• Do not meet suggested FTE/volume dedicated to the trauma registry
• Trauma Registry Staff supporting multiple hospitals
within their healthcare systems • Other responsibilities in addition to the trauma
registry
Training
• Many are not AIS trained • Many have never attended a Trauma Registrar
Course • Many do not have all that abstract data
participating in TQIP Education
Abstracting/Coding
• Using HIM coding
• Depending on the trauma registry software to assign the correct code by description
• AIS coding without proper training
• Coding without the proper coding tools • External injuries
Missing Data
• Complications by definition
• Comorbid Conditions by definition
• Mapping • Not capturing • Missing data fields in trauma registry software
Misinterpreted Data Definitions
• Hospital Complications
• Comorbid Conditions
• Total ICU Length of Stay • Total Ventilator Days
What we’ve learned about the process…
• Time consuming
• Expensive
• TQIP validation tool
• The data submission cycle does not work as well for TQIP as it does for NTDB
Where we’re headed…
• Provide a more current validation review
• Quarterly data submissions
• A change in the way we do
data validation • TQIP data review • Remote access
Take home message
• Data Dictionary
• TQIP Team
• TQIP Tools
• Validate Your Data
