ECONOMIC FREEDOM FIGHTERSmember of parliament, Mpho Rama-katsa, says he and his faction willlodge an application at the Bloemfon-tein High Court to nullify the party’snational assembly held last Decem-ber.

Disgruntled party members calledthe elective conference, “undemocrat-ic, unconstitutional and irregular”.

Ramakatsa was one of the fourmembers of the EFF who launched acampaign called Save the soul of theEFF on Saturday (21/02) at theMangaung Outdoor Sports Centre.

Ramakatsa also said his caucuswould ask the court to force partyleaders to release the party’s finan-cial statements following allegationsof mismanagement of party funds bythe party leader Julius Malema.

EFF MP Khanyisile Litchfield-Tsha-balala told reporters her party wasmore corrupt than the ANC.

Tshabalala slated Malema’s style ofleadership and accused him ofturning the party into a militantorganisation determined on beingdisruptive rather than being con-structive.

Ramakatsa accused Malema ofusing the party as a “cash cow” tosupport his lavish lifestyle with

money from party coffers.Fellow EFF MP Andile Mngxitama

said the EFF was their home andthey would not allow the party’s soulto be destroyed by behaviour import-ed from the ANC.

Ramakatsa said although he,Mngxitama and Tshabalala had beensuspended last week by the party, they would continue to participate in

committees in parliament.“We were suspended by an illegiti-

mate structure,” Ramakatsa ex-plained.

In response to the allegations,Khotso Morapela, the party’s FreeState provincial chairperson, releaseda statement distancing the party’sprovincial structures from thecampaign spearheaded by Ramakatsa.

OVER the past few years, South Africa’smatric pass rate has shown an increase –from 60,6% in 2009 to 75,8% in 2014.While as a country we are celebrating

this growth and hoping it is a reflection ofimproved teaching and teaching methods,we also recognise the serious problem inthe overall education and training systemin relation to a lack of capacity to train andeducate for a skills-intensive economy.Ignoring for a moment the fact that less

than half the learners that began gr. 1 12years ago made it to gr. 12 and furtherignoring for a moment that these youngpeople need access to occupational skillsand training, it remains a fact that moreoften than not learners need to furthertheir matric education in order to acquireknowledge and practical skills that, togeth-er with their matric, will allow them toenter the job market.Matric is a year fraught with tension and

very hard work. Learners leave this yearabsolutely worn out and oftentimes ill-equipped to deal with the battles that lieahead in terms of securing a viable futurefor themselves and their future families.“Thousands of matriculants do not pass

with university exemption due to variousfactors beyond their control,” says NatalieRabson, marketing manager at the BostonCity Campus & Business College. “As aninstitution specialising in occupational andhigher learning, we register many learnersfor further or higher education and we setthem on a pathway to arm themselves withskills and make them work-ready.“Of course, many learners do not meet

the entry requirements for various occupa-tional and higher education programmesand I can tell you that from a counsellor’spoint of view it can be very dishearteningand frustrating.“Boston recognises that too many youths

are not reaching their full potential atschool and are not prepared to enter the jobmarket. It’s for this reason that Boston hascreated a series of exciting access pro-grammes, including a range of highereducation Gateway programmes offeringprospective students various access optionsinto tertiary education without the need torepeat gr. 12.“We started these programmes with a

purpose of providing students a path thatboth leads to credits awarded towards ourvarious accredited and registered highereducation programmes, as well as entranceto the career of their dreams,” says Rabson.Boston’s Gateway programmes offer a

range of alternatives, including programmessuch as Marketing Management, BusinessManagement, Financial Accounting andEvent Management. These are bridging courses that can

provide you access to higher educationprogrammes at Boston. On successfulcompletion thereof, you will have met theentry requirements for a range of highereducation diplomas and secured futurevertical access to a degree programme, achieved without having to redo gr. 12.Rather than repeating matric, Bostonbelieves that a better option is to moveforward with one’s tertiary education bycompleting a Gateway course. The advantages of participating success-

fully in a Gateway access route, is that notonly will one then have access to Bostondiplomas, but because there are variouspathways one also gets a taste of one’schosen career and the opportunity to findout if it really is one’s preferred careerchoice. Then you also get a taste of thetime, commitment and effort involved inhigher education, and you can see if youare suited to something academic orperhaps whether you should investigate aprogramme that is more practical.“A good education system ensures not

only the development of human endeavours, but guarantees the maintenance of ade-quately functioning social, political andeconomic systems.“Over the past few years, the country has

seen a doubling of the education budget, yetthe resources invested have not resulted ina dramatic increase in the quality ofeducation.“While Government alone might not have

the solution, we at Boston believe that thisdilemma must be made a national challengethat invites tertiary institutions to step up.Our learners deserve a chance at highereducation,” concludes Rabson.Visit the new Boston campus at 99 St

Andrew Street, Bloemfontein, or call051-447-5700.

BY 2010, most people knew there was aglobal financial crisis.Unfortunately, most people did not know

what to do about it.Rather than let go, most clenched their

fists tighter and waited for the crisis topass, praying that their political leaderscould solve this global crisis and that happydays would return.A few knew they had to make changes.

Yet, without a strong financial education, they did not know what to do or how tochange.I am not very religious, yet I learned

very important lessons in Sunday School. Two lessons that are still applicable todayare:) Blessed are the meek for they shall inheritthe earth. X Matthew 5:5.The meek does not mean the weak. The meek are those who are humble

enough to know they need to reduce theirarrogance and be willing to learn anew.)My people are destroyed from a lack ofknowledge. X Hosea 4:6.The real financial crisis is a crisis of an

educational system that is obsolete and outof touch with the real world. The financial crisis will not go away until

our schools inform learners about thetruth behind jobs, work, taxes, andinvesting. It is time our schools stop training

learners to become dependent (employees). If we do not teach people about

money, we will have many more peoplelike the proverbial poor dad: a verygood, well-educated, hard-working, andhonest man, but a man who died angry atthe rich expecting the government to takecare of him.It is time we set people free.Humans cannot find freedom until they

let go of old ideas. As Albert Einstein rightly said, the

definition of insanity is doing the samething over and over and expecting adifferent result.

Yet, that is what people are doing. They listen to obsolete experts dishing

out obsolete financial advice, advice thathas not worked in the past.Yet, they continue to cling to those

obsolete ideas.I know it is hard to change old ideas. As

they say: “You can’t teach an old dog newtricks.” With humans, it is difficult tochange a person who clings tightly to oldideas.Taking action is important because we

learn from our mistakes. The idea that mistakes are bad, is a bad

idea.If people do not make mistakes, they fail

to learn, which is why my poor dadremained poor.Rather than look at the loss of his job,

the election, and his ice-cream business asblessings, he looked at his failures – just asa school teacher would – and punishedhimself for making mistakes. He died a poor man, not realising that his

failures were his biggest opportunities tolearn and to grow. You see, in school, students who make

the most mistakes are labelled stupid. In the real world, people who make the

most mistakes and learn from them, become smarter people.Looking forward to the budget speech of

the new financial year, it is time toposition you for the next financialperiod.) Send your contribution to this co-lumn, of no more than 500 words, [email protected].

ASTRONOMERS of the South AfricanAstronomical Observatory (SAAO) andSouthern African Large Telescope (SALT),together with collaborators in Americaand Europe, have recently discovered adim star which they calculate passedthrough the edge of our solar system 70 000years ago.

A close pass by astronomical standards, the star passed Earth at a distance ofaround 8 trillion kilometres (52 000 timesthe distance between the earth and thesun, or 0,8 light years).

At that distance astronomers think thatthe star passed through the “outer OortCloud” system – a region at the edge ofthe solar system filled with trillions offrozen comets larger than 1 km in diame-ter.

“At that time, the star referred to asScholz’s Star was the closest known star toour solar system (other than our sun) withpotential to disturb the Oort Cloud.

No other star is known to have everapproached as close to our planetarysystem, and the nearest star currently,Proxima Centauri, is over five times asdistant at 4,2 light years away.

“We were alerted by European colleaguesto a new discovery of a nearby star,” DrPetri Vaisanen, SAAO and SALT astrono-mer, said.

Using the SALT telescope in Sutherland, the team immediately measured the star’sspeed relative to earth. In technical terms,it turned out its radial velocity was veryhigh, while the tangential velocity wassmall.

“Essentially, it is moving very rapidlyaway from us, while its sideways ortangential motion across the sky is slow.

“After these measurements and discus-sion, the realisation of what might havehappened was intriguing,” explainedVaisanen.

“We were dealing with stuff from sciencefiction movies here.

“The star must have zoomed past usrelatively recently. How close? Did itdisturb any comets’ orbits, which couldthen rain down into the inner solar systemposing serious threat to life on Earth?” heasked.

Led by Eric Mamajek from America, theastronomers proceeded to calculate themost likely path of the star through spaceover time.

They wanted to estimate the distancebetween Scholz’s Star and the sun, at themoment of closest approach to see whateffects the star might had on the solarsystem.

A massive slow-moving object enteringthe inner solar system could triggerso-called comet showers – periods withenhanced number of comets whoseorbits are perturbed by the passingobject bringing them into the innersolar system. These events are extremely rare, but

they could potentially lead to extinctionevents on Earth due to comet impacts, such as those that are thought to havewiped out the dinosaurs.

The results, to be published inAstrophysical Journal Letters , show thatluckily for earth, Scholz’s star is a rela-tively low mass object that passed at highspeed through the outer part of the OortCloud at the edge of the solar system.

The astronomers said they had carriedout 10 000 simulations of the star’s possiblepath through space and none of them hadyielded an encounter that should havetriggered a significant comet shower.

“We are happy that there are no apoca-lypse dates to report, but it is veryinteres-ting that after hundreds of years ofastronomy with telescopes we can stilluncover surprising stellar-size objectsright in our neighbourhood,” said Vaisan-en.

Scholz’s star’s close pass of only 0,8 lightyears, puts it as the closest known stellarflyby to the solar system.

While the close flyby of Scholz’s starlikely had little impact on the Oort Cloudand the rest of the solar system, there maybe many other stars that may have had asignificant effect, or may do so in thefuture.

The recently launched European SpaceAgency (ESA) Gaia Satellite will allowastronomers to measure the distances andthe velocities of billions of stars, to find

out if other stars may have had a closeencounter with earth in the past or will doin the distant future.

Background InformationScholz’s Star is a small, dim red dwarf

type star in the constellation of Monocer-os, about 20 light years away.

Its formal designation is WISEJ072003.20-084651.2, however it has beennicknamed Scholz’s Star to honour astron-omer Ralf-Dieter Scholz who discoveredthe star in late 2013.

Further observations by Valentin Ivanov,Vaisanen and Alexei Kniazev using SALT,and by Adam Burgasser using the Kecktelescope, demonstrated that Scholz’s staris actually a binary star system consistingof a low-mass star (about 8,2% the mass ofthe sun, or 86 times the mass of Jupiter)and a “brown dwarf” companion withmass about 65 times the mass of Jupiter(6,2% the mass of the sun).

Brown dwarfs are considered failed stars– with masses too low to burn hydrogendeep in their cores to shine like a star, butmuch more massive than gas giant planetslike Jupiter.

The Oort Cloud is a vast distant spheri-cal shell surrounding the entire solarsystem filled with trillions of long-periodcomets. Though not directly observed, itsexistence is required to explain the orbitalcharacte-ristics and numbers of cometswith orbital periods around the sun ofmany thousands to millions of years.

Computer simulations of the Oort Cloudshow that these comets usually remain inthe Oort Cloud unless they are gravitatio-nally perturbed by encounters with nearbystars.

When stars pass through the Oort Cloudthey change the orbits of some of thecomets, causing them to enter the innersolar system and are seen as these as longperiod comets.) Dr Nicola Loaring is the outreachastronomer for the South AfricanAstronomical Observatory (SAAO).

Prof. KintuMade my enemies come and

confess to me…

Several years of unhappiness in my marriagelead to loneliness and continued crying. Afterhearing testimonials about Professor Kintuon the radio, in newspapers and my oldfriend's son he had saved from drugs andalcohol abuse, I decided to visit him .

For only R200 Professor Kinthu read my fortune accurately andtold me about my past life and my marriage.

In a dish of water with a mirror he showed me the face of myenemies as well as my husband's girlfriend.

He performed a special prayer and gave me powerful love crystals- a special one to use at my workplace

and for my business success. Unbelievable! In one week myenemies approached me and confessed bad things they did to usand my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me. Over theyears I tried healers and priests but they all failed. Professor Kintu, there's no other way to say thank you but to tell others about you.

Only one visit to himand you will live smiling. I am OMIE SINGH, aresident of Pietermaritzburg, after I saw an article inthe paper saying that The Great Papa Magi chargesonly R200. I believed in him, I booked anappointment and met with him at his beautiful

temple. In Bloemfontein at Waverley next to spar. Before I met him, I was struggling financially and I could not stay in relationships, whoever came in my life, and then something happened and my girlfriend left me. Itwas like a bad omen on me, but after I saw The Great Papa Magi, he touched myforehead and palms, and prayed for me and told me to wait for seven days. In just 3days, my girlfriend requested us to meet with her at their home. On arrival, she kneltdown and told me she was ready to be my wife. We made a great wedding and arehappy now. The Great Papa Magi is the right person to solve our society problems. You can find him at next to Spar. Thanks to him again.Waverley Bloemfontein

PRIMARY SCHOOLS across thecountry are invited to become partof the biggest football tournamentin the world for kids between 10and 12 years old. They can do this by entering the

2015 Danone Nations Cup.In total, 32 countries have started

the gruelling qualifiers to identifytheir team that will compete in theWorld Finals in Morocco later thisyear.South Africa is no different.

Registration has opened and allprimary schools have until 27February to do so.The competition is run under the

auspices of the South AfricanSchools Football Association(SASFA) and the Department ofBasic Education. Games will beginat cluster level immediately afterregistration closes. The winners will progress to the

regional finals, culminating in thenine provincial winners who willthen play in the national finals todetermine which school will becrowned the national champion.“Through the Danone Nations

Cup we are reaching kids at acrucial age,” said Chantel Ehlers,Danone communications specialist.

“We are passionate about makinga difference to people’s lives andour mission is ‘Bringing healththrough food to as many people aspossible,’ which we are achievingthrough this tournament. We arealso encouraging kids to believe intheir dreams.”Both the 2014 winners (Siphume-

lele Primary School in Inanda,KwaZulu-Natal) and runners-up(Farrarmere Primary School fromBoksburg, Gauteng) will be back inaction this year. For Siphumelele, there are only

four positions that need to be filledas the rest of the 2014 winningteam will play again.According to team manager,

Emmanuel Mkhize, the trip toBrazil last year has had animmeasurable impact on the livesof all the players that went. Thisexperience will help the team.“The trip to Brazil to compete in

the world finals has opened theeyes of every player. They knowthat there are endless opportunitiesawaiting them and I can see thattheir confidence and fighting spirithave improved dramatically.“All this helps in their approach

to the game this year,” saidMkhize. He said they have learnt that

you can achieve anything if youput your mind and energy to itand remain focused. The specialist coach that took

the team to Brazil last year hasleft and the school coach, JabulaniMkhize, will take charge.“The kids know him well and

are used to his coaching style, so itwill not make a difference,”Mkhize said.Tebogo Ngakane, manager of the

Farrarmere team, is also confidentthat his school can win thetournament this year.He admits that being part of the

Danone Nations Cup last year wasan incredible and great learningexperience for the kids.“We were proud of the team to

have reached the national finalsthe first time – and coming secondwas the cherry on the cake. Butthat was last year and we have anexcellent team again that I knowcan do the job,” he said.“We have also brought in a new

coach, Pride Moeketsi Morosi, whohas a UEFA B licence, and a loadof experience to go with it, to helpus.”Unlike Siphumelele, Ngakane

said that the entire 2014 team hadprogressed to high school. Thisyear a fresh new team will becompeting.“The u.10 team will be competing

this year and, although we stillhave to hold trials to finalise theDanone Nations Cup team, theyhave all played together for anumber of years, which is a help.”To enter your school in the 2015

THE Proteas captain, AB deVilliers, has admitted that hisside was outplayed by a spiritedIndian outfit, a defeat he feels is abitter pill to swallow early on inthe competition.“It’s a big knock for us to get

beaten by 130 runs. It’s almostembarrassing. You never want tolose by that number of runs. Youalways want to be a competitiveteam and feel like you are in thegame.“We pride ourselves on that and

it didn’t happen today,” DeVilliers said after the match onSunday (22/02).De Villiers emphasised the key

role the coaching staff and seniorplayers would play in helping thesquad to refocus ahead of their“must-win” match against theWest Indies in the Sydney CricketGround (SCG) on Friday (27/02).“We are going to have to lick

our wounds – your confidencetakes a knock with performanceslike that and it’s up to the seniorgroup of players to make surethat the confidence is up there,

come Friday against the WestIndies.“Little things like today’s

(Sunday 22/02) performance cancreep into your game if you startthinking about it too much andallow it to knock your confidence. There are a few things that needto happen.“Obviously after a loss like that

you want to recover and toregroup as a unit.“We will put all of our focus on

Friday, it’s a big must-win matchfor us in Sydney,” concluded thecaptain.

Proteas loss a ‘bitter pill’Things in my life went fromgood to worse in a very shorttime. My love live, financial

problems jealousy, myhusband’s family were allagainst me. Luckily I cameacross Marria through a

friend. She helped me andshowed me my enemiesthrough a mirror for only

R200. She did miracles in my life. She told me all myproblems without mentioning anything to her. She showed me

the people who worked hard to see me suffering some ofwhich were my friends and relatives. She performed a specialprayer, washed away my bad luck and cleansed my home.
