THE matriarch of the Mapikela family hasraised concerns of her family’s safety after shediscovered that some community memberswere throwing accusations around that theFree State’s Sports Department gave her mil-lions of rands when they refurbished the his-toric Mapikela House. The 78-year-old Esther Mapikela, who is the

granddaughter-in-law of the founder of theANC, Thomas Mthobi Mapikela (1869-1945),said the communitywas accusingher of receiv-ing a hand-out of money from the government. This happened after the home in Batho Loca-

tion,Bloemfontein, was restored by theDepart-ment of Sport. She is fearing that these jealousies will ex-

pand and turn into threats.“Rumours have been going around that Iwas

given millions of rands and that I’m hiding thetruth from my family.“We received nothing after the renovations

and this is what I want to tell the residents ofBatho Location,” Mapikela told Express.According to the Sports Department’s

spokesman, Tankiso Zola, the structure at theback of Thomas Mapikela will not be a muse-um, but an interpretative centre.“Prior to the erection of the centre the house

was visited by many people and this was in-fringing on the privacy of the family. The gov-ernment decided tobuild the centre for the fam-ily where they will receive guests and sharewith them the history of Mr Mapikela, showphotographs in the form of an exhibition andhis work without interfering with day-to-dayfamily life in the house,” Zola said.“The centre is still under construction and

security has been appointed by the contractoron a 24-hour basis to look after and protect thecentre until the date when the centre will behanded over to the Department of Sport, Arts,Culture and Recreation (DSACR) to officiallyopen it and hand it over to the family,” he add-ed.Zola also stated that the security guard at the

building was appointed by the contractor forthe period of construction work on site.“Once the centre is handed over to DSACR

newsecurityarrangementswill thenbeconsid-ered moving forward. The community andme-dia houses will be informed when the centrewill be officially opening.”

ASwecelebrated the InternationalDayofPeaceon Saturday, let us reflect on whether peace ispossible and how we may achieve it.“The Great Peace towards which people of

goodwill throughout the centuries have in-clined their hearts, of which seers and poets forcountless generations have expressed their vi-sion, and for which from age to age the sacredscriptures of mankind have constantly held thepromise, is now at long last within the reach ofthe nations,” says the governing council of theBahá’í international community in a statemententitled The Promise of World Peace. The statement continues by saying: “World

peace is not only possible, but inevitable. It is

the next stage in the evolution of this planet . . .”We now have more than ever before condi-

tions for theestablishmentofpeaceonearth.De-spite all these there are persistent barriers topeace. The most common barriers are pre-judices, suspicions and self-interest.In order to achieve peace we need to accept

that we are one human species. Physical differ-ences such as skin colour or hair texture are su-perficial and have nothing to do with any sup-posed superiority of one ethnic group or anoth-er. According to the Bahá’íWritings we are likeflowers in one garden, the fruits of one tree andthe leaves of one branch.Although we differ from one another physi-

cally and emotionally, and have different tal-ents, we all belong to the same human family.

TheBahá’í Scriptures state that: “Allhumani-ty are the children of God; they belong to thesame family, to the same original race”, “Loveye all religions and all races with a love that istrue and sincere and show that love throughdeeds and not through the tongue . . .” and “ . . .let us try with heart and soul that unity maydwell in the world, that all the peoples may be-come one people, and that the whole surface ofthe earth may be like one country.”The constructive role that religion can play

in creating a peaceful global order and the de-structive impact that religious fanaticism canhave on the stability and progress of the worldcannot be denied. Considering that frequentlyreligion is used for the accomplishment of nar-row ends, there is need for us to contemplate on

the appropriate role which religion should playin our lives and in public sphere.According to the Bahá’í Scriptures: “Religion

must be the source of fellowship, the cause ofunityandthenearnessofGod toman. If it rouseshatred and strife, it is evident that absence ofreligion is preferable and an irreligious man isbetter than one who professes it.”The great peace long awaited by the peoples

of theworld iswithin our reach.Anynew think-ing about peace must begin with belief in theoneness of humanity. The ultimate goal is notonly to end war and create agencies of interna-tional cooperation, but it is the unification of allthe peoples of theworld in one universal family.) LEARNERS from Parys will be among com-petitors in the international powerboat tour-nament to be held at the Abrahamsrust Resortin Sasolburg in December. The grand prix tournament will be held on

14 and 15 December.Free State Tourism, led by MEC Msebenzi

Zwane together with the president of Power-boat South Africa, Christo de Jager, and Metsi-maholo mayor Moeketsi Moshodi, launchedthe F2 World Championship Powerboat FreeState Grand Prix.Zwane said the importance of the tourna-

ment is on the same scale as the 2010 SoccerWorld Cup Tournament. The tournament will be hosting 18 interna-

tional F2 drivers from 10 different countries.Among the countries, Italy, Sweden and Azer-baijan, including South Africa’s ownWynand deJager, will be in the three-day powerboat tour-nament.According to Zwane, statistics show that

South African lives are lost in water in the in-land areas due to lack of knowledge of howto survive in water.“Water as being part of our lives should

be treated as a resource that can help us.”He placed it in simple words by saying as

black people, unlike before when parentsstopped and scared children from playing inthe water by saying “there is a snake in thewater”, should encourage them to be one withwater. The 18-year-old Puleng Direko from Parys

is one of the students who has been power-boating for the past four years.“Though we don’t have a car at home, it only

took me a day to drive the powerboat.”She further said that the community respects

her for what she was doing though they didn’tthink she would survive in water, she beat theodds and will soon be the first black womanin South Africa to lead the country to greaterdepths and higher waves.

SOME Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pi-rates fans breathed a sigh of relief af-ter last Monday’s 2013 Telkom Knock-out draw in Johannesburg.“We got a soft draw,” some said

while others proclaimed with hiddensmiles that the draw was “cooked” tobenefit the two Soweto giants.Forme there is nothing to be excited

about. In fact, they should be moreworried about this outcome. Let thosefans not fool themselves into thinkingthat just because their clubs haveavoided each other, and the likes ofMamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars,Bloemfontein Cel-tic, SuperSportUnited and Free State Stars – they arenowas goodashavingqualified for thenext stage of the tournament. In the previous seasons, we have

witnessed the so-called smaller teamscausing big upsets in cup competi-tions. So Chiefs and Pirates should ex-pect a tough match when they square

off with Polokwane City and Mpuma-langa Black Aces respectively.City, who on paper are no-hopers,

surprised all and sundry; includingthemselves, when they registered ashock 2-0 victory overAjaxCapeTownonSunday. Following thiswin, Eduar-do Schoeler’s troops will go into the 5October fixture oozing a lot of confi-dence.Schoeler, who was thrown in at the

deep end as a caretaker coach for Cityafter the club parted ways with Dun-can Lechesa last week, knows quitewell what a win over Amakhosi coulddo for the morale of his players. Hewill try to impress the management ofthe Limpopo side by recording a sec-ond win on the trot.So my question is: If Schoeler is

lucky to beat Chiefs next month, willCity’s head honchos appoint him astheir new head coach?I don’t think so. The Brazilian does

not have adequate coaching experi-ence as he has worked as a physicaltrainer for more than a decade in hisnative country, before coming toSouth Africa in July.In the past few days, big names such

as Ian Palmer and Vladislav Hericwere linked with City, but the PSLrookies have yet to name a successorfor Lechesa. We shall see who will be-

come thenewcoach forCity. Timewilltell.Going back to a “cooked” draw, Pi-

rates could find the going toughagainst Aces who have assembled astrong squad to compete in the PSL.The likes of Clifford Ngobeni,

Onyekachi Okonko and MabhutiKhenyezahold thekey forAmazayoni.) Last year’s Telkom Knockout final-ists, Bloemfontein Celtic andMamelo-di Sundowns, have been pairedagainst each other in the first roundof the competition. Their match willbe played at the Kaizer Sebothelo Sta-dium in Botshabelo on 6 October.) The bitter race for South AfricanFootball Association (Safa)’s top jobwill reach its climax on Saturday. Ei-ther Dr Danny Jordaan or Mandla“Shoes” Mazibuko will be named asthenewSafa president after the organ-isation’s quadrennial elections thatwill be held at the Helderfontein Es-tate, Fourways, Johannesburg.Jordaan is a favourite to land the

plum job after he was nominated by 32of the 52Safa’s lastmonth, butMazibu-ko is unfazed and he was quoted in themedia as saying that many minds hadchanged since the nomination processafter weeks of campaigning. All I can say, is good luck to both

gentlemen.

preparing for this fight.“I’ve already won it even before I’ve

stepped into the ring.“This fight will not go beyond the

seventh round, I’m going to knock him

out,” Moselesele said.Moselesele, who hails from Welkom, is

mourning the death of his father whopassed away on Thursday, but said hisfather’s passing would not affect hispreparations for the fight.“I won’t let my father’s death affect me.

In fact, I’ll be dedicating this fight to him.I can’t wait to hit the ring,” he said.Moselesele is a graduate of the 2006 BSA

and SABC Baby Champs Programme, where he defeated all his opponents in theflyweight division and was crownednational “baby champ” champion. In his professional career, he has fought
