Dear Friends, Our season of preparation for a royal birth includes worship that reminds us that the experience of waiting and anticipation is an important part of life. Our Advent Event, classes for all ages, the St. Nicholas Dinner, Lessons and Carols with the Lovett School, our Blue Christmas service for those who do not find it easy to access their own joy in this season and our non-anxious Christmas Pageant, all help us prepare for a magnifi- cent celebration of light shining into all that is dark in our lives and in the world. I hope and trust you will join in some or all of the offerings described in these pages, as long as they serve your ability to recognize that following Jesus is a little odd in a world that has so thoroughly appropriated our cel- ebration for commercial purposes that any experience anticipation is related only to consumption. My prayer is that the gifts of time you give yourself as much as any gifts you give out of generosity to others will be an antidote to the anxiety engendered by the rampant materialism all around us; and that in claiming or re-claiming a holy time of preparation, we may each enjoy a wonderful celebration of Christmas in due course. †Geoffrey

By Jamin Harkness

Meet Benjamin. He is the redheaded kid who you’ll seecrawling around in the All Saints’ magnolia, on Sundays (in his church clothes). Ben is seven years old and in secondgrade. He is a cradle Episcopalian, baptized at All Saints’.

He receives a weekly allowance from us, his dads. He divides his money into three jars, labeled “Spend – Save – Give.”Using this popular method (from Dave Ramsey) he learnsweekly that to receive his allowance he must work extrahard, over and above family responsibilities. For example,taking your plate to the sink, picking up clothes and helpingwith the dogs are family responsibilities. Volunteering to takeout trash and volunteering to help with a household projecthowever will earn him his allowance. So far, the system hasworked out great. He can use the money in his Spend jar when he finds a toyhe just has to have! He must use his money in his Save jarwhen he (or one of his buddies) causes damage (even if acci-dental) to his belongings or something in the house (he’s allboy!); or, we can transfer funds to the other two jars withpermission. The Give jar is used to help out someone in need.

A few weeks back Ben had saved up a good bit in his Givejar so we started talking to him about how best to use it. Wediscussed buying toys for kids at a shelter, putting it in theoffering plate, and then we told Ben about Threads. Just thethought of helping kids with clothes really touched him. He

was fired up and wanted to get some kids some clothes.Off we went to Walmart on a Saturday to pick outsome clothes. To our surprise, Ben did not make a dashto the Lego’s aisle, he focused on the clothes (maybebecause he had his jar in hand). We picked out somebasic tee shirts, short and long sleeved. I had to talkhim into getting a few girl colors and he agreed. The next Sunday morning, he couldn’t wait to bringthe shirts to church. He folded them and put themin the bag. He sat with them beside him in churchduring the 9:00 a.m. service as we were going tomeet Mr. Bob (Tick) at Threads in-between services.Ben was literally bouncing down the sidewalk todeliver the shirts. Mr. Bob met us there and gaveBen the tour. He couldn’t believe it was like a realstore and he couldn’t wait to give the shirts. Mr. Bobmade a big deal and thanked Ben. The smile and joy that he got from giving the shirtsmade the whole weekly process of dividing upmonies worth it. We figured out a creative way to teach our son the joy of giving. That same day, we also made sandwiches in Ellis Hall for the home-less. We were on giving overload and he reallyunderstood the Joy of Giving.

What’s happened since that day is that when Ben receiveshis allowance we now see him consciously and unpromptedby his parents, take moremoney from his Spend jarand put it in the Give jar.We just bought some coatsfor Threads and he asked tomove money from Save intoGive. He gets the point! Benjamin Harkness is the sonof Jamin Harkness andRodrigo Maragni, members atAll Saints’. Feel free to giveBen a high-five and lovinglyslow him down if he’s zoomingaround church too fast!

It’s late fall now in New Haven. When I sit in an upper alcoveof the Divinity School library in the afternoons, doggedlyclimbing what I have come to refer to as Mount Reading, themaple tree outside my arched, mullioned window is burntorange. By the end of this week, most likely its leaves will begone. I wish I could turn my pages with comprehension andretention as quickly as the wind blows this season’s leaves fromthe maple tree!I love it here in New Haven, although I miss my family and All Saints’. I was trying to decide which class to tell you I likedbest – it’s a toss-up among Patristics, Anglican Prayer Book,Foundations of Christian Worship and Old Testament. I reallycan’t decide, as they're all great. The professors are wonderful,and my classmates are diverse and interesting, and we’ve formeda close community. To make up for my recent sabbatical fromthe Morning Choir, I am singing in the Marquand Choir,thanks to Ray and Beth’s excellent teaching and discipline overall of these years, and the Berkeley Choir too. And – Noelle,this one is for you: I’m also a Sacramental Winer, the women’sa cappella group – because I just couldn’t resist. They let mebecause I said I knew you. I’ll see all of you over the holidays,just as soon as my papers are turned in and my finals are over! Della Wager Wells

A View Into Brotherhood: An Internship With The Society of St. John the Evangelist

By Simeon Bruce

My phone buzzes and Istumble, still in my pajamasand rubbing the sleep frommy eyes, the ten feet frommy room to the chapel inGrafton House. The otherthree interns are alreadywaiting in silence. We awaitthe appointed time to offerprayer, to break the silencewe have kept since lastnight when we said,“Thanks be to God.” We

offer prayer corporately five times a day. Sometimes we praywith the 11 brothers of the Society of St. John theEvangelist (SSJE) and sometimes we are joined by guests at Emery House who are here on silent retreat.Grafton House is in West Newbury, Massachusetts. (The official monastery of the SSJE is in CambridgeMassachusetts, about an hour away.) There are 175 acres ofbuildings, forests, gardens, and farmland. We work togetherwith the brothers to care for the property and our guests, as well as a number of chickens, geese, and ducks. Myfavorite work is on the forest trails. I love to wander off andput my headphones in. Since nobody’s around, I dance like a rockstar while I work. The fact that we work with ourhands also makes our work very satisfying. We get to see

the benefits of our labor every day in walkable trails, beautifulgardens, and vegetables on our plates.I am learning something new every day. The Spirit is constantly teaching me, through nature, silence, and my fellow followers of Christ. I hope you will pray for me, my All Saints’ family, as I pray for you. Pray that I will remainopen to all that God has for me here, that I may learn tolove God and my neighbor with ever increasing abandon.

Simeon joined All Saints’ in 2011 while a student at theGeorgia Institute of Technology, and spends some of his timebeekeeping at Grafton House in Massachusetts.

A Special New Book From Martha SterneDuring this past summer, Martha Sterne met with eighteen Men of Hope, alumni of Covenant Community, to talk about addiction and to remember Juelz Mitchell, the charismatic former Program Director of CCI who died latelast year. The result of those conversations is entitled Juelz: Wisdom Stories andSayings from the Men of Hope.During the recent Kanuga weekend, Martha asked a roomful of parishioners for a show of hands of all those who have no family or friends affected by addiction.NOBODY RAISED THEIR HAND.

Juelz lifts the curtain of secrecy and shame around addiction and lets in some airand light. Juelz is full of the gentle, authentic, humorous and encouraging All Saints’ spirit that has marked Covenant Community since its inception 25years ago. Martha says, “Juelz would be a wonderful gift for just about anybodyyou can think of!”

Resolution in Honor of Malinda Snow Whereas Malinda Snow has been reading since the ageof five; andWhereas Malinda Snow hastaught thousands of students to read critically through herwork as a Professor of English at Georgia State; andWhereas Malinda Snow is oneof the few people in the countrywho can read and sing thenotes in shape note music; and

Whereas Malinda Snow was one of the first group of lectorsto be trained in the Diocese of Atlanta by the legendary Bill Sparrow in the 1980s; andWhereas Malinda Snow accepted Harry Pritchett’s invitation to serve as coordinator of the lector Ministry at All Saints’ in 1990; andWhereas Malinda Snow has inspired generations of readersin public worship by writing a letter to her dear readers eachand every season of twenty five years; and Whereas Malinda Snow has done all these things while alsoassuming many other roles in church and society, therefore;

Be it Resolved that the vestry of All Saints’ Church at its regular meeting on Monday, October 19, 2015 honorsMalinda Snow for her ministry while regretting that she is unwilling to accept appointment to a further twenty-fiveyear term; and Be it Further Resolved that said vestry believing that thereis no better exemplar of commitment than Malinda Snow,declares that the Sunday known as Commitment Sunday,November 8, 2015 shall this year be known as MalindaSnow Day; and Be it Further Resolved that said vestry encourages everymember of the parish to express their thanks to Malinda and to honor her ministry by actually reading their Bibles for themselves as often as possible.

At least once every holiday season I want to throw mycoffee at the television when I hear Joy to the Worldfor the millionth time. The holidays are a wonderfulopportunity for us to rest, but in our fast-paced culturechanging that mindset requires a lot of intention. Here are 5 ways to make the most of your holidays, by practicing doing less:

1. ASK FOR HELP. Whether it’s a special family meal,transporting children to events, or wrapping gifts, reachout to your support system to share the load;

2. DON’T TRY TO FIT IT ALL IN. Remember that holidayscome every year—you don’t have to do it all in 2015;

3. MAKE TRADITIONS, NOT SCHEDULES. Be creative,flexible, and spontaneous in planning your time;

4. PRACTICE ACCEPTANCE. Say a prayer of acceptance toremind yourself to enjoy, not control, your special time.

5. CONNECT. Holidays are times we can reconnect withthose we have made distant, and grow closer still withthose we hold dear.
