Human-like behavior: AI has the same intellectual abilities as humans, can transfer conclusions to other areas, think / act in system breaks

And: What if they “wake up?”
Example: “Short Circuit” movie (1986) Military robot struck by lightning (“fulguration”) becomes restarted, "wakes up”, escapes and flees for it‘s life confrontation with emotionality, friendship, fear of dismantling 27-Jun-2019 13

Secret of “consciousness” – still not revealed
What does „consciousness“ mean? Different definitions, depending on disciplinary approaches „Where“ is consciousness? And how AI can become conscious?

Basic Categories of Consciousness
Widely accepted:
1. Vigilance consciousness (wakefulness vs. sleep)
2. Cognitive awareness (focusing attention on something) 3. Condition awareness (to have a conscious state) 4. Phenomenal consciousness (feeling, sense etc.)
5. Awareness of action (doing something with intention) 6. Self-confidence (being aware of one's thoughts, sensations, etc.)

Expectations on AI Consciousness
Different popular approaches: Consciousness arises from complexity. As soon as a certain point is crossed, it emerges. Consciousness is the result of a certain neuronal combination (correlate) we try to find and to rebuild. Consciousness comes from outside and enters machines and "awakens" them.

Expectations on AI Consciousness
Different popular approaches: Consciousness always needs a body, not only the brain. Consciousness consists on integrated information, brain and body only are jelley. Conscious AI comes from outer space, is “living” in our computers and networks, hiding from us.

Social dimension of the confusion
Many people expect ai consciousness in the future. AI consciousness narratives are created and fed – not only by the film industry and pop culture, but also by technology manufacturers and media.
And as we know:
Narratives can be very powerful, and people adapt their behaviour to them

Our research questions on AI Consciousnes:
Which social and scientific groups have so far dealt with "conscious AI" or "machine consciousness"?
Which approaches are underlying them, which future perspectives are being discussed?
Where is the cross-disciplinary critical discourse blocked?
Which mutual reproaches are formulated? Where do disciplinary concepts and ideas not fit together?

Our research questions on AI Consciousnes:
What effects does the language used in the disciplines, e.g. in the form of metaphors and analogies, have on the understanding of "conscious AI“?
What elements should a common interdisciplinary understanding include? What indications suggest that conscious AI could actually be expected? Are there already efforts to adjust to a possible conscious AI?

Ethical statement
27-Jun-2019 23
"We have to design technology in a way that serves us, and not that we bow under it.
We have to keep ourselves under control, not be seduced by technology and not get lost in it.
We have to tame the AI to preserve ourselves from loss in the long run."
Apparatus Sapiens: AI becoming human? | Keynote | Prof. Dr. Karsten Wendland
I look forward to hearing from you
