1. Title

Sinusoidal Waveform, Measuring Phase And Frequency Using Oscilloscope

2. Outcomes

The desired outcomes to be achieved at the end of the experiment:

1. Analyze the characteristic of an AC circuitry using an oscilloscope.( PLO2-PS-C4)

2. Organize time management in group effectively according task given. (PLO5-TS-P5)

3. Demonstrate good leadership skill during laboratory experiment. (PLO9-LS-A3)

3. Overview

An oscilloscope could be used to determine the waveform from an unknown input. Critical

information of the measured waveform could be further read-out, such as the cycle time, the peak

value and etc. A special method called Lissajous diagram could be performed using a two-port

oscilloscope where both the frequency and phase angle of impedance could be determined.

1. Oscilloscope (Analog)

2. Oscilloscope probes (sufficient)

3. 2 x function generators

4. 1 x 1kΩ resistor

5. 1 x 10mH inductor

6. 1 x 0.1µF capacitor

5. Experiment Procedures

5.1. Magnitude and Frequency of Sinusoidal Waveform

Procedures :

1. Turn on the oscilloscope.

2. Set AC –DC- GND switch to GND and determine the 0V reference. After that switch it

back to AC.

3. Set the frequency selector of the function generator to 1 kHz and select sine wave.

4. Connect the output of the function generator to input X (channel 1).

5. Adjust the amplitude of the function generator to 6Vp-p.

6. Observe the waveform and draw your observation.

7. Determine the key readouts.

8. Switch the selector of the function generator to triangular wave and repeat step 5.

5.2. Frequency Measurement Using Lissajous Pattern

Notes:

1. You need two sets of function generators, namely Gen A and Gen B.

2. The arrangement of the generators are:

Gen A [𝑓𝐴, Sine, 6Vp-p] and Gen B [𝑓𝐵, Sine, 6Vp-p].

where 𝑓𝐴 and 𝑓𝐵 are adjustable.

Trial 1:

1. Connect Gen A and connect to input X and input Y of the oscilloscope.

2. Choose a low frequency, 𝑓𝐴.

3. Observe waveform A via input X and input Y.

4. Set the oscilloscope selector to X-Y.

5. Observe the Lissajous pattern and draw the observed pattern. (Refer to theory.)

6. State your observation with respect to the theory.

Trial 2:

3. Observe waveform A and B.

5. Observe the Lissajous pattern and draw the observed pattern. (Refer to theory.)

6. State your observations and explain it.

Trial 3:

1. Continue from Trial 2.

2. Try out the ratio 𝑓𝐴: 𝑓𝐵 as [1:1, 1:2, 1:3] one after another.

3. Observe the Lissajous pattern for each given ratio and draw the observed pattern. (Refer

to theory.)

4. Formulate your observation if possible.

5.3. Phase and Frequency Measurement of Series RLC Circuit

Procedures :

1. Connect RLC circuit as shown in Figure 1.

2. Choose any input frequency.

3. Connect the oscilloscope probes at Vin and Vout.

4. Observe and draw the waveforms of Vin and Vout. Calculate phase difference between Vin

and Vout from the screen.

5. Observe and draw the Lissajous pattern and calculate phase difference between Vin and

Vout using formula shown in Figure 2.

6. Place probe across 10mH inductor and draw the Lissajous pattern.

7. Place the probe across 0.1µF and draw the Lissajous pattern.

Trial 2:

1. Connect RLC circuit as shown in Figure 1.

2. Connect the oscilloscope probes at Vin and Vout.

3. Vary the input frequency from low to high.

4. Observe the waveforms of Vin and Vout. Record the phase difference between Vin and Vout

from the screen.

5. Observe the Lissajous pattern. Record phase difference between Vin and Vout using

formula shown in Figure 2.
