Urban Innovations: The Role of Downtown in a Sustainable Future

Saturday, September 24; 8:45 am - 10:15 am

Join us for a special opportunity to hear from James E. Rogers, president and CEO of Duke Energy. Newsweek named

Rogers to The Global Elite list, “The 50 Most Powerful People in the World,” saying “The CEO of Duke Energy could make dreams of renewable power a reality.”

Rogers is committed to energy efficiency as demonstrated by his leadership on efforts to reduce the energy use of office buildings in Uptown Charlotte by 20% within the next 5 years. Last year, the Envision: Charlotte program was recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative for its plans to transform Charlotte’s downtown into the most environmentally sustainable in the nation. Mr. Rogers will share with us the remarkable initiatives Duke Energy is spearheading and how downtowns across the country are leading the way in energy efficiency.

Let’s Get This Right! New Approaches to Urban Redevelopment

Sunday, September 25; 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Holly Wiedemann, founding principal and president of AU Associates, Inc., has spent two decades as a developer, focusing on opportunities for urban infill and the revitalization of existing structures. AU Associates has been directly responsible for creating over 350 units of mixed income housing, 100,000 square feet of commercial space and over $65 million of projects across the Commonwealth of Kentucky and West Virginia. In June of 2010, Wiedemann founded AU Construction, in order to vertically integrate her company and build all of the projects she develops. Recent projects have included creative re-use of schools, churches and dilapidated parcels. During this session, Ms. Weidemann will inspire us all to think big about how to transform our downtowns with creative uses and will present an array of ideas for financing these projects.

Both are passionate about downtowns and urban design and have wisdom to share from their decades of work in city building that others can bring home and apply to their own cities.

Chris Leinberger Visiting Fellow, The Brookings Institution

The Future of Placemaking in Economic Growth

Monday, September 26; 11:15 am - 12:30 pm

Placemaking is a missing level of governance in developed economies,

particularly as the industrial age gives way to the knowledge and the experience economies. It can spur economic growth that is environmentally sustainable and socially equitable if the field moves beyond ‘clean and safe’ to a profit and investment orientation. At this session, Chris Leinberger will discuss his latest research at Brookings that focuses on walkable urban places and the economic and social equity performance metrics of place. He will also provide a glimpse into his next book about the future of Placemaking.
