1. This paper consists of THREE sections:

SECTION A: Essay (50 marks)

SECTION B: Longer Transactional Texts (2x25 marks) (50 marks)

2. Answer ONE question from Section A and TWO questions from Section B.

3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.

4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.

5. You are strongly advised to spend approximately 60 minutes on Section A; 30 minutes on each question from Section B.

6. Number each response as the topics are numbered on the question paper.

7. Give each response a suitable title/heading as indicated by the question. NOTE: The title / heading must NOT be considered when doing a word count.

8. Pay attention to spelling, sentence construction and language.

9. THE WRITING PROCESS

QUESTION 1

Write an essay of 300 – 350 words (1 ½ - 2 pages) on ONE of the following topics.Write down the number of the topic and give your essay a suitable title.

1.5 “No, Miss, my mom doesn’t work.” Among the many pressures that the modern family must face is the question of

whether or not the mother should be out in the work-place earning a wage. In many cases, the family cannot afford for her not to be doing so, but in situations where the father’s income is adequate, women are often made to feel inferior if they choose to be full-time homemakers.

What is your opinion? Explore this topic as fully as you can. [50]

2.1 BUSINESS LETTERIt has recently been announced that Sun international are planning to build a

huge Conference Centre and Entertainment Complex high up on the slopes of Table Mountain, just below the upper cable station. As part of the project, a new cableway will be built to ferry guests to the new complex.

Write a Business Letter to the Director of Sun International, Mr Sol Kerzner, to express your objections to (or support for) this scheme. [25]

2.2 WRITING FOR THE PRESS

Write news report for publication in your local newspaper about an attempted removal of squatters from a ‘respectable neighbourhood’. Your report could either focus on the desperate plight of the homeless OR the economic impact this squatter camp may have on this ‘respectable neighbourhood’ in the view of the residents. [25]

2.3 REVIEW

You are the writer for the entertainment column of a newspaper and went to see a new blockbuster movie at the local cinema. Write a review for publication. [25]

2.4 SPEECH

Your principal has asked you to deliver a speech to the parents of prospective Grade Eights. Your brief is to give them a sense of what it means to be a learner at your school. What is on offer? What will their child learn? Essentially, what is your school all about [25]
