New Y ork Irish Center Oíche Shamna Spooktacular Unleash you child’s Creative Spirit at the New York Irish Center this Oíche Shamhna! We’re getting ready to open our doors to 24 lucky children on Saturday 27th October for our Second Annual Spooktacluar Oíche Shamhna Celebrations. It is said that the origins of Halloween, or Oíche Shamhna, in Gaelic, can be traced back to ancient Ireland during the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrating the end of the light-half of the year, and the beginning of the dark-half of the year as it descended upon the land, a time when the gap between the living and the spiritual world is at its narrowest. On Saturday 27th of October Between 12am-06.30pm, The New York Irish Center will host an exciting fun-filled day exploring the true origins of Oíche Shamhna, through two customized Irish Arts workshops. The workshops will be led by two professional native Irish teaching artists; Vera Doherty will lead Ancient Irish Spooky Art and Jane McCarter will lead Legendary Spooky Irish Drama. Two groups of children will learn and become familiar with seasonal characters associated with Halloween, such as Jack O’Lantern, the banshee and Dracula through our visual arts workshop led by the talented Vera Doherty. All these Halloween characters have Irish origins. The Irish myths and legends surrounding Oíche Shamhna will be brought to life by the children through the expressive medium of drama, with a hint of the native Irish tongue Gaeilge, in a workshop led by Jane McCarter. The creative workshops will be followed by a showcase where family and friends will be treated to a snippet of the day’s highlights through a drama sketch and all the wonderful artworks will be exhibited. This will lead straight into our exciting finale, the Oíche Shamhna Spooktacular family party, where everyone can enjoy a series of traditional Irish Halloween games, such as Apple- Bobbing, and other seasonal cultural activities for all the family, all in fancy dress of course. To ensure you don’t miss out on this unique opportunity book your child’s place today. There is a small charge for the entire day to cover costs; $15 per child, and excellent family discounts are available.
