Natural Selection
EvolutionEvolution is the modification (change) in the inherited characteristics of organisms over many generations
1. Variation: members of a group of organisms have different genes and traits
Factors that Control Evolution

2
2. Selection: Survival of the fittest
Factors that Control Evolution
3. Inheritance: genetic traits are passed down from parents to offspring
Factors that Control Evolution
4. Time: Evolution takes time
Factors that Control Evolution
Variation: there are green and brown beetles in the wild
Selection: green beetles are more visible to birds and get eaten
3
Inheritance: more brown beetles survive to reproduce and pass on their brown color
Time: if brown beetles continue to survive better in the environment, all the green beetles will die off

Common misconceptions Evolution is a theory about the origin of life. Individual organisms can evolve during a single lifespan. Natural selection involves organisms trying to adapt. Humans can't negatively impact ecosystems, because species will just evolve what they need to survive. The fittest organisms in a population are those that are strongest, healthiest, fastest, and/or largest. Natural selection produces organisms perfectly suited to their environments.
