Every LetterCountsby Nina Lee AquinoJanuary 26 – February 24, 2013
Season Sponsor
Welcome! everyone here at Factory Theatre is happy to share our home with you. This season promises to be an exciting and powerful one; one that is full of theatrical innovation, cultural and social commentary, and gut-punching emotion. We thought it fitting to open with the world premiere of Every Letter Counts, written by one of Factory’s long-time artistic associates, Nina lee Aquino. Both the play and the artist are a testament to Factory’s
commitment to developing new works, as well as nurturing the artists behind those works. What started as a tiny seed of an idea five years ago, grew into the first courageous attempt at (re)telling a very personal story. Nina brought the first draft of the play to the Factory where it was workshopped and then featured as part of the 2010 crosscurrents Festival. With the relentless support and guidance of Iris Turcott, our company Dramaturge, Every Letter Counts has grown into a haunting and personal investigation of the power that legacy holds over family lines, and the ultimate powerlessness in our lives. It was this play that we first worked with each other as actors in that staged reading. And, as the play grew over the years, so did our relationship: from co-actors to director-actor and now as artistic partners at the helm of this great theatre. It has been an amazing ride so far, and this is just the beginning. We are so pleased to share this play and the ongoing evolution of our artistic journey with you this evening. We continue to be dedicated to bringing our audience the best new works canada has to offer, and we continue to develop what we feel are the best playwrights in the country. All of us here at Factory want to make your theatrical experience the best it can possibly be. Thank you for coming. enjoy.

NoTeS From The PlAyWrIghT, NINA lee AquINo
I blame marjorie chan for this, really. After attending the opening night of The Madness of the Square here at the Factory mainstage, I became quite fascinated – almost obsessed – with the idea of a young voice in the middle of a revolution. I realized that I, too, had been a child of revolution, having grown up in a country that was going through significant change. Tremendous movement.
Ninoy Aquino was part of that movement. he was the youngest senator to be elected in Philippine history and the most threatening political and personal opponent of President Ferdinand marcos. on August 21, 1983, he was assassinated; shot at close range in the back of the head while disembarking from his plane. And the nation that was once silent with fear and doubt was suddenly awakened.
Inspired by the real events leading up to the assassination of Ninoy Aquino, what was once an attempt to commemorate an important chapter in Filipino history became a deep personal examination of my history, my lineage, my last name and all the baggage that comes with it. I had to ask myself... in the short amount of time that I spent with Ninoy, at six years old, could I have said something to keep him from going back to the Philippines? And if he did stay, would I have altered the fate of all the Aquinos – including me?
I guess I’ll never know the answer… but through the gift of words that I so vehemently refused to receive back then, here I am writing a story about Scrabble, strategy, belief, legacy and love, set in the museum of my mind. And I guess I discovered a thing or two about myself along the way.Turns out Ninoy was right, after all: with words, anything is possible.
my gratitude goes to jovanni Sy and cahoots Theatre Projects for listening to the ramblings of a madwoman and daring me to put them on paper; the canada council for the Arts and the ontario Arts council for supporting the voices in my head; Iris Turcott for being the beacon of light in this oft dark, very lonely of road of writing; Ken gass and Factory Theatre for giving my play a home; and to Nigel Shawn Williams for always mining the truths underneath the words.
This play is dedicated to the game that I never quite finished with Ninoy.

NINoy – A TImelINe
Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, jr. (1932 – 1983) was a Filipino politician, statesman, and a leading opposition figure to the marcos regime. Born in concepcion, Tarlac, into a prominent Filipino political family (he was the grandson of Servilliano Aquino, a revolutionary who fought against Spanish and American colonialism), Ninoy served as vice governor and governor of Tarlac Province, and in 1967 he was the youngest person ever elected to the Senate of the Philippines.
November 27, 1932 – Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, jr., is born.
1965 – Ferdinand marcos is elected President of the Philippines.
1967 – Ninoy Aquino is elected to the Senate of the Philippines and becomes a vocal critic of the marcos Administration.
1969 – The communist Party of the Philippines forms the New People’s Army and begins waging a guerilla war against the republic of the Philippines, seeking to establish communist government. The communist insurrection gave political cover to marcos as he became increasingly authoritarian. marcos is easily re-elected in the 1969 elections.
September 23, 1972 – marcos signs Proclamation No. 1081, declaring martial law in the Philippines. he had previously suspended the writ of habeas corpus, and with these sweeping new powers, he imprisoned many opposition figures, including Ninoy Aquino.
After nearly three years of detention Aquino is tried before a military tribunal in 1975. In protest of the rigged proceedings, he begins a 40-day hunger strike that seriously deteriorates his health.
March, 1980 – Aquino suffers a heart attack in prison and accepts an offer of exile to the united States, where he stays in Boston, Texas, and los Angeles, and gives frequent lectures on politics in the Philippines.
January 17, 1981 – marcos ostensibly lifts martial law – although all of the orders and decrees issued under martial law remain in effect.
1983 – Aquino resolves to return to the Philippines to continue his work to transition the country back to democracy.
August 21, 1983 – Aquino’s plane touches down in manila. Ninoy tells journalists travelling with him, “you have to be very ready with your hand camera because this action can become very fast. In a matter of a three or four minutes it could be all over, you know, and I may not be able to talk to you again after this.”
Ninoy Aquino was assassinated minutes after leaving the plane. At his funeral, tens of thousands passed by his glass coffin where his face, disfigured from the bullet holes, could be seen clearly. Aquino’s assassination is often cited as the beginning of the People Power revolution, and the beginning of the end of the marcos dictatorship.
2001 – The Aquino Museum, dedicated to his memory and service, opens in Manila.
My friends do not forget that your readiness to suffer will light the torch of freedom which can never be put out. … Do not forget that the purpose of life is precisely reexamining our being, not merely a floating flotsam in the time, in the floods of time. Do not forget, as Longfellow said, that we should never be like driven cattle, but be a hero in the strife. – Ninoy Aquino, california, February 15, 1981
