Evergreen Gives… Blood. Every two seconds, a patient in the United States is in need of blood. In fact, about one of every seven peo‐ple entering a hospital requires a blood transfusion. These startling statistics underscore the crucial nature of blood donation. Yet, only about 3% of the population currently gives blood. The number one reason these donors say they give is because they “want to help others.” This attitude of selfless giving supplies the 43,000 pints of donated blood used each day in North America.
There is no substitute for human blood. Over 4.5 million patients need blood transfusions each year in the United States and Canada. Many of these patients are among the most vulnerable in our hospitals – premature infants, chil‐dren being treated for cancer and children having heart surgeries. Additionally, adult cancer and trauma patients may require platelet transfusions to survive. Some pa‐tients requiring life‐saving organ transplants are tragically passed up for the procedure, even when the organ is available, due to a lack of compatible blood to support the transplant.
The actual donation process only takes about ten minutes, though you can expect to spend about an hour total at the donation center. Modern blood donation centers are manned by highly‐trained professionals
who are dedicated to your safety. Healthy adults can safely donate about a pint of blood every two months. Remarkably, it would only take one more percent of Americans donating blood for blood shortages to disap‐pear.
Most of us don’t have many opportunities to help trauma victims and those with serious illnesses. But one pint of your blood can save up to three lives, making blood donation a unique chance to change multiple lives. It’s a selfless act that allows you to help others in an un‐forgettable way.
Recently, the HR staff took an afternoon and visited the local American Red Cross in Louisville. Each gave a pint of blood, potentially saving up to nine lives!

Meet Shaun Vickery, Rehab Director My name is Shaun Vickery. I am the Reha-bilitation Director at Ridgewood Terrace Health and Rehabilitation Center in Madi-sonville, Kentucky (my hometown). I have been employed with Evergreen since March 2010. I graduated with a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Lou-isville in 2002 (The last official physical ther-apy class of the University of Louisville, and the one and only class of Bellarville). In ad-dition to being a physical therapist, I am also
a bivocational minister in the United Methodist faith. On a personal note, I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Mel-ody, for 12 years. We have been blessed with three beautiful children, Gun-ner, Angel, and Kaden. In my free-time, I enjoy spending time with my family anyway that I can. I also enjoy practicing and competing in martial arts. I have practiced Shotokan karate for over 25 years and have been a member of sev-eral national teams. I am also an avid Houston Texans fan and catch every game that I can. Although I have worked for Evergreen for a short period of time, I truly feel blessed to work for such a wonderful organization. It is encouraging in this day and age to work for an organization that places such a high value on its em-ployees and it customers. I look forward to many wonderful years with the company.
Happy Anniversary
