JIM HEYE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT APRIL 2017 I see that Spring has truly arrived, one minute it’s pouring down rain and the next minute the glowing sun is out and shining. I was thinking that it’s truly nice to be part of an active and growing club. First we had a very successful Spring Tune Up day, with a lot of members either bringing their car for a look over or just showing up to learn and help each other. Once again, I have a list of things to do on my car, but the parts have already been ordered and are being shipped as we speak. Second, the club has taken their first tour up to the tulip fields which starts out our touring season. And third, we have a number of people that have put in their application for membership to our club. There are great and wonderful things happening in the club. This leads me to my next thought for which Henry Ford would be proud. It’s where the old meets the new. Even though we’re working on Henry’s old cars, Henry was always an innovator. Working on new ways to streamline his production process, ways to use his waste product from his factories, (Did you know that’s where Kingsford Charcoal Briquettes came from?), wanting to be up on new ways of communicating with the outside world. So I think he would be very happy to see that our club is now on Facebook. We are lucky to have two very talented members that work at Microsoft and are helping us to get to the next level. But I don’t see this as changing our club, just the opposite. I view this as a way to let the world see that the dreams, aspirations and hard work that Henry had are still alive and well. This is something that I am reminded of every time I go to the gas station to fill up. Instead of taking ten minutes, it takes me a half hour because of all the

people who stop to look at the car and ask questions. In the parades we participate in, you can see all the people line the route, love the old cars and are amazed at how they are still on the road. This is something for which Henry would truly be proud. So help us bring the old to the new, or new to the old. Whichever way you want to look at it and check us out on Facebook and give us a like. I think that Henry would not only be proud of our club, but also of you. So, until next time, drive safe and Happy Motoring! Jim Heye ***********************************************

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES Wild About Cars Garage 4/13/17

President Jim Heye called the meeting to order at 7:25PM and led the flag salute. There were no new members or guests attending. Greeters and Refreshments: Donna and Ron Larson served as greeters and refreshments were supplied by Terri and Mike Kelley and Ila and George Sage.. Correspondence/General: Nothing new to report. Car Talk: Gary Dupen requested assistance with an electrical issue and Mike Kelley indicated that Gary’s on the schedule for a doctor day visit in June. Approval of prior minutes: Minutes from the March general meeting as printed in the Echoes were voted upon and approved. Treasurer’s Report: Report prepared by Steve Francois and presented by Jim as Steve was unavailable. Report was voted upon and approved. Jim indicated that an additional $1750 will reflect in next month’s report, the results of funds received for our assisting the Gertie’s while they hosted the recent Puyallup swap meet. Committee Reports: Program: Committee chair remains open. Jim has arranged for the May program, a presentation by “the bat lady”. Attend and learn all you ever wanted to know of not, about bats! Membership: Jim relayed that at the last board meeting a motion was made and passed, that our club will cover the membership fee for any new members joining for the remainder of 2017. Club Picnic Update: Terri Severson confirmed Saturday July 15th for the club picnic. We will not have a scheduled general meeting for July. Elaine Dupen shared that a former club member has era attire to donate to our club for possible use by members during parades. Information will be forthcoming in the Echo’s. Parades: Gary confirmed Kirkland 4th of July and Redmond Derby Days, July 8. Our participation in the Auburn Veterans Day parade scheduled on November 11th is still pending. Seminars: The Spring Tune-Up, just concluded at George’s garage, was a perennial success with differing amounts of work being completed and/or recognition of areas needing attention being found on eight cars. The next seminar, May 20th at George’s, will cover steering. Sunshine: Sharon indicated nothing new to report.

Swap Meet: Following the recent Puyallup swap meet hosted by the Gertie’s, they honored and presented a plaque to our own Dell Schweitzer and his ’31 pickup for “Gertie’s Pick!” Tours: Win spoke of a possible tour to Sedro-Woolley to the home of Ray Huff and a tour of his basement containing a “locomotive” and related displays. Plans are yet unconfirmed. Monday April 24th is the selected date for our tulip tour. As last year, we will depart from the Woodinville Costco parking lot at 9AM. Ila and George are planning a two day, one overnight, tour to Mt. Rainier on June 3-4. Accommodations are to be determined. Web Site: Update from Gary under Unfinished Business. Doctor Day: Mike Kelley indicated that the next doctor day visit will be Thursday the 20th with work being done on the ’28 Tudor of Aiden Folger. The June visit will be at the residence of Elaine and Gary Dupen working on their ‘31 A400. Unfinished business: Gary Price thanked all for their feedback following his presentation at the last general meeting concerning ongoing efforts to update our web presence and overall social media exposure. Gary continues to work with Derek toward that goal through implementation of ideas fostered by club members. Gary noted that the most visited portion of our website is the calendar and that the website will soon prompt visitors about upcoming tours and other events. The club is also now on Facebook and anyone needing assistance with access to that program, may contact Gary. Mike Kelley gave an update on our possibly hosting the 2019 NW Regional Meet and in particular where the conference would be held. The location has been narrowed to Hilton in either Bellevue or Issaquah with costs being a central issue. Mike believes making a decision by June 20th is necessary for planning purposes. New Business: Apparently Carnation Farms is housing a Model T, Model A combination vehicle that once was part of the Carnation display at Disneyland. They have approached our club looking to possibly do some mechanical restoration, perhaps a doctor day type approach. Gary, with the thought of building club presence through social media if we take on such a project, opined that perhaps we could contact New Day NW, hosted by King 5 TV. Gary asked for volunteers to work with him on this potential club project.

Door Prizes: Keith Hammond, Lee Thomas, Dick Morris and Jeff Gaidjiergis were winners. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 8:22PM. Program: Here’s Johnny…and George. This program was presented (?) by George Sage and Johnny Young doing their version of Johnny and Ed, or Dean and Jerry or George and Gracie or you pick the team. There were many laughs and groans capping off an evening of club camaraderie. Respectively submitted, Rich and Jan Nestler, secretaries. *******************************************

(ALMOST) TULIP TOUR

It was quite a day. The good news, no rain with broken skies. The other news, there were broken cars with no one making it to the tulip fields! As planned, our adventuresome group, 10 A’s present, met at the Woodinville Costco for a 9AM departure. Some two miles down the road, Prairie Chicken, the Nestler’s 30 Coupe succumbed to Avian Pox, or something like her neck had been rung…stopping dead. Coasting to a stop, three A’s driven by Dirk, Mike and George pulled in behind along busy route 9. 20 minutes later, she’s running and off we go to catch the others, making it some two miles before she died again. Another fix and off for another three miles to the corner where the rest of the group is waiting at McDonalds.

She died again, at the light, at which point with Jan steering, Rich, Mike and Teri push her across route 9 traffic and into the McDonalds parking lot. It’s now 10AM and the rest of the group is ready to head for the tulips but instead linger as Dirk, George, Mike and Win try to diagnose the reoccurring problem. 11AM rolls around with no solution and at 11:15 six of ten A’s with drivers Don Werlech, Larry and Jan Grant, George and Janet Kaitis, Mike and Debra Lapolla, Win and Cathy Brown and Johnny Young head north. As diagnosis continues, and throughout the process, Prairie Chicken has her manifold heater removed, the coil removed and replaced, the coil wire replaced, a new condenser supplied by Dirk installed, points being filed followed by a complete distributor replacement supplied by George. All electrical connections were checked and re-checked including the removal of the instrument panel with all appearing good. Following each step and trial runs and stops around the parking lot, she would run and then die. Frustration continued until George narrowed an electrical problem to something in the dash wiring. With a “hot wire” between the two posts on the terminal box, the problem, be it temporary, was solved! By now it’s after noon and decision time, head north or get lunch, perhaps visit Molbak’s Nursery and call it a day. Tulip fields can wait another year so off to lunch we go. However, the story does not end there. How about the group that headed north? Well, they made it to the McDonalds in Arlington for the next intended stop. Coffee is good but upon departure, Don’s ’31 Coupe will not start! Win has it diagnosed as something with the carburetor and so the steps of cleaning the filter, cleaning the screen, filing the points and eventually replacing part of the contacts were successful in getting her running. But again, the delay earlier in the day and then this delay led this group to the same conclusion as the other, get lunch, call it a day and see the tulips next year. Oh yeah, Win relays that throughout the carburetor repair, there were a lot of backfires, LOUD backfires, and few customers remained in the McDonalds lot! Note picture: The group never getting out of Woodinville, was able to find tulips at Molbak’s. Story submitted by Rich Nestler. *******************************************

MODEL A DOCTOR DAY

George's shop again was our destination after breakfast at the Pancake House in Redmond. A dozen members arrived before noon to tackle young Aiden Folger's 1928 Tudor sedan. Installing components was the order of business. Finishing brake drums, front fenders, removing the gas tank to address the rusting interior, there was a fair amount of intermingling conversations carrying on, which is a big part of getting our team together. Man alive, the hoist of George's sure is a key asset for many, if not all members. He is a very gracious gentleman! Jim (Aiden's dad) brought macaroni salad and delicious homemade sandwiches for us all. Of course George had the coffee handled. Stay posted for our next third Thursday of the month doctor's day appointment to be announced. Plan on joining us if you can arrange your schedule to do so. You will enjoy it, and you might learn a tip or two. With good memories, Lee.

Another Model A patient will be scheduled for May. If you have a need for some assistance in solving a problem or installing a part, or just want us to give your Model A a once-over, give me a call on 253-569-2352 or email me at [email protected]. We like to schedule a “Model A Doctor” event on the third Thursday of each month or we will work out another day. Mike Kelley *******************************************
