Croatia’s most prominent sculptor, Ivan Meštrović is “the greatest phenomenon among sculptors”, according to Auguste Rodin, an artist credited with transforming sculpture into a modern art form. Meštrović’s works have entered the collective memory of three former territorial units (the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia), and co-shaped artistic scenes in several European countries and the USA, where he pursued his artistic path. The exposition, adopting an original concept by architect Filip Beusan and including discrete lighting modulations, offers a new insight into his masterful art and features over fifty works, sculptures and drawings from private and public Croatian collections. Guided tours in English by appointment. Open: 10:00 - 19:00, Thursdays 10:00 - 21:00, Sundays, holidays 10:00 - 18:00.

Stanko Kristl is considered one of the most prominent Slovenian architects, a man whose work has provoked and inspired local and international publics alike, both during the process of their creation and up to the present day. As an architect in the broadest sense of the term, Stanko Kristl uses his projects and research work to pose, at every opportunity, the fundamental question of architecture: What is architecture in relation to human? People and their perception of space is a key theme in his work, one that has left a significant mark on architect Kristl’s design research approach.Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Medieval Ljubljana15 Nov 2017 - 2 May 2018, City Museum of LjubljanaMore than 1000 years old wooden vessel challenges our current perspective on the emergence of medieval Ljubljana; leather products that make visiting an medieval shoemaking workshop worthwhile; the grave of a knight that attests to the prestige of the city at the time of the Turkish incursions. Learn about recent discoveries made in Ljubljana’s city centre and get first-hand experience of the stories that have been around for more than 500 years. Were the Middle Ages really as dark as we imagine them today? Who ruled the city of the three market towns united by the city walls into one medieval city? How is it that not even the ferocious Turkish incursions could weaken the city walls? And, finally, where does the name “Ljubljana” come from? Guided tours in English on Sundays at 16:30Open: 10:00 -18:00, Thursdays 10:00 -21:00. Closed: Mondays.

Mario Magajna: Photographer20 Mar - 13 May, Jakopič GalleryMario Magajna (1916-2007), a photojournalist from the Slovene minority in Italy, dedicated his life to photography. His incredibly large oeuvre (more than 260,000 negatives), preserved by the Department of History and Ethnography at the National and Study Library in Trieste, stands as proof of his dedication. Magajna was one of the pioneers of professional Slovenian photojournalism, a master of his craft, a conscious Slovenian, and a man of cosmopolitan spirit and dialogue.Central Slovenian themes will actualise the retrospective exhibition of Mario Magajna, created in 2016. The exhibition is accompanied by events that precisely explain the temporal and geographical circumstances of the photographer’s work, and his importance for a wider history of photography. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Boris Jesih: Connections30 Nov 2017 - 11 Mar 2018, International Centre of Graphic Arts in LjubljanaBoris Jesih (1943) established himself

as an artist at the end of the 1960s as part of the expressive figuration circle of painters. Under the influence of pop art, he responded to the characteristics of the spirit of the time with his geometric transformation of everyday objects, later also turning predominantly to landscape. As a printmaker, he excels in the techniques of relief printing and flat printing, with superior results in colour lithography. As a prize winner of the 13th International Biennial of Graphic Arts in 1979 (special prize for a young artist), he attracted attention with his series of lithographs, a set of which is part of the MGLC collection. Beside the lithographs, the retrospective exhibition also presents drawings, paintings and photographs, which highlight the connections between his creative process and his works.Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays.

Zoran Mušič (1909-2005)Permanent exhibition at the National GalleryZoran Mušič, the best known 20th century Slovenian-born painter and a man with more than one homeland, spent most of his life between Venice and Paris. He mostly painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, Dalmatian donkeys and horses, trees, views of Venice, double portraits with his wife Ida, and poignant self-portraits depicting him as an old man. His visual motifs were always related to the Slovenian region of Kras and its typical scenes. He became world famous with his series of paintings We Are Not the Last, in which he relived the scenes he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp. Ljubljana’s National Gallery displays the world’s only permanent survey exhibition of Mušič’s work, which explores the entire range of the famous

artist’s painting techniques. Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00-20:00. Closed: Mondays.

Plečnik CollectionThe new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention.Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). A group may be a maximum of seven persons.Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays

Bjelo Dugme is considered to be one of the most popular and one of the most important  bands of the former  Yugoslavian rock scene. The band was formed in Sarajevo in 1974 and the band’s debut album Kad bi bio bijelo dugme, released in 1974, brought them nationwide popularity with its Balkan folk-influenced hard rock sound. The band’s future several releases, featuring similar sound, maintained their huge popularity, described by the media as “Dugmemania”, and the band’s work, especially their symphonic ballads with poetic lyrics, was also widely praised by the critics.

Daniel Melingo - lead voice, clarinet; Rodrigo Guerra - guitar , vocal; Romain Lécuyer - double-bass, vocal; Facundo Torres - bandoneón, vocal; Arnaldo Zanelli - piano, vocal The Argentine tango artist is making a big comeback with his new album, Anda. Like an illusionist straight out of a Borges novella, Melingo is back, with his voice, his clarinet and his sense of drama. Listening to Anda is like enjoying a Fellini film with your eyes closed, losing yourself in a display of sound designed as a suite of baroque scenes in which each piece pulsates and destabilises us.

Glass’s opera Beauty and the Beast is quite different from its renowned animated and film versions. Although presented as a simple fairy tale, it soon becomes clear that it tackles a much wider and deeper theme - the nature of the creative process. Glass’s opera Beauty and the Beast is a first staging of any of the composer’s operatic pieces in our country, and an appropriate opportunity to remember the eightieth anniversary of the artist’s birth. The staging of this performance as his opera direction debut is entrusted to the acknowledged choreographer and theatre director Matjaž Farič.Soloists and orchestra of the SNT Opera and Ballet Ljubljana
