Message from the Chair of Governors On behalf of the Governing Body of Evenlode Primary School I am pleased to present to you the annual report for the 2015/16 academic year. 2015/16 was another challenging year for the school but again a very successful one, with the school gaining ‘Green Category’ rating by Welsh Government. The new school hall was also finally completed in time for the new academic year and apart from providing fantastic provision for our children, also hosted our newly formed Saplings ‘Out of School Care’ provision, formally recognized by CSW However, the financial situation was again very challenging, with the school receiving no training budget and remaining at the bottom of the Vale and Family funding League. Next year will be even more challenging. The members of the PTA and the whole school community worked tirelessly throughout the year on a number of fundraising activities including very enjoyable and successful Christmas and Summer Fayres. These provided invaluable extra funds for the school and you can find details on how these funds were spent within this report. In true Evenlode tradition the school year ended on a high with an exuberant production of ‘Pinafore Pirates.’ This followed a fantastic Christmas Concert which ‘christened’ the new hall. I’m sure the array of talent on display provided an unforgettable experience for all who saw it. Finally, I would like to make an appeal to parents and carers to support the school as they continue to strive to improve attendance. You all play a vital role in helping the children to get as much as possible from their time here at Evenlode. On behalf of my fellow Governors I would like to thank the Head Teacher and all the staff who, as always, have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that our children continue to enjoy an unrivalled range of opportunities and activities. We really do appreciate it! Ceri Griffiths Chair of Governors

School Life At Evenlode Primary School life has again been very busy this year. The building of the new school hall has taken a long time, but finally the pupils are beginning to enjoy the benefits of having a much larger area at their disposal. ‘Saplings’ has been a welcome addition to the life of Evenlode and the club is working closely with parents/carers to ensure that the initial success continues. CSW has now been received. Revenue from any club hiring the facilities is ploughed back into the school’s ‘coffers.’ During the last year, the Hall provided a venue for cricket, tennis, Karate, and Zumba Classes as well as hosting children’s parties and a Plaid Cymru conference. An important development last year saw the Eco and School Council replaced with a School Parliament/Senedd The school continues to offer a varied and balanced curriculum, with children involved in numerous Educational visits, the most notable of last year being arranged with ISSET and St. Joseph’s Primary School to NASA IN Florida.

The New School Hall Health & Safety

The Governing Body of Evenlode Primary School has a high regard for its responsibilities regarding the health, safety, security and welfare of the pupils and staff within its care and all visitors to the school. With the implementation of our Health and Safety Policy, the Governing Body will ensure that, wherever possible, a working and learning environment, which is safe, secure and without risk to health is provided and maintained.

Page 9: Evenlode Primary School Annual Report To Parents & Carers ... · PTA 16 School Performance, Facts and Figures 18 Attendance & School Data 18 ... 18 The Prospectus/Toilets 21 Outturn

Proactive health and safety inspections take place within the school and the surrounding area on a regular basis. With the building of the new school hall, issues were addressed and the outside of the existing building has been cleaned. 22 windows have been replaced around the school along with the repainting of the old school hall and some of the classrooms. Fire drills are held each half term. An accident book is kept and used by all staff to record incidents.

Additional Learning Needs A copy of the School’s ALN Policy can be obtained by contacting the school. The objectives of this policy are set to provide a balanced and broad curriculum to all children regardless of educational need. The policy is reviewed on an annual basis. The ALN Co-ordinator is Mrs. Andrea Dunlop, who is supported by a team of LSAs who are trained in appropriate intervention strategies. Pupils are entered on the Provision Map. This map identifies provision made for every child in school and is regularly updated. The Provision Map indicates three levels of support. Wave One identifies classroom activities and apparatus to which all children have access. The majority of children fall within this Wave. Wave Two identifies children who are displaying a difficulty in some area of learning. These children are put on ‘School Action”. They may be withdrawn to small group or one-to-one activities with the ALN Co-ordinator or an LSA and are provided with specialist programmes such as Catch-Up Literacy and Catch-Up Numeracy. We have recently introduced the LEXIA programme to help pupils who need support with aspects of Literacy like spelling and grammar. Volunteer adults have also worked with these children under the supervision of the class teacher.

Children who are not making progress on Wave Two will then be placed on Wave Three. Outside agencies will then be involved. We call upon Pupil Support Services for Specialist Teachers, Educational Psychologist assessments and when necessary, involve Pediatricians, Speech and Language Therapists, Audiologists and Occupational Therapy services. We also involve Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and any other relevant agency as deemed necessary. These children are then put on ‘School Action Plus’. Advice is taken from the aforementioned specialists and appropriate interventions are used with these children. IEPs/IBPs are written for these children with agreed targets and regular reviews. Parents/carers are informed and consulted throughout as they are integral to the process. Application to the ALN Panel can be made for those children who require more support or resources than can be funded by the school budget. This additional funding would then come from the Local Authority. For children with more complex needs a Statutory Assessment may be necessary, parents/carers would be fully involved should this take place.

The school meets the needs of Children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) with support from the Ethnic Minority Achievement Service. Where appropriate, some children may receive additional in school support from this service. Some children are identified as being More Able and Talented (MAT) and support is offered to these children in class.

Success of the policy and interventions are measured by Standardised Tests, Teacher Assessments, Specialist Teacher observations and assessments and pupils’ attitude to learning and is reflected on the Provision Map.

The Curriculum Evenlode Primary pupils begin their journey the term following their fourth birthday, when they are admitted into our Reception All new in-take (regardless of curriculum year) are assessed within their first six weeks and are placed on INCERTS the in-house tracking system. If they have arrived with relevant documentation from their previous school, this is discussed with the ALN Co-ordinator, class teacher and the previous school. From Nursery through to the end of Year 2, the pupils are taught via the Foundation Phase. The curriculum in key stage 2 is a skills based curriculum using the Cornerstone scheme, which endeavours to promote experiential learning. All pupils from Nursery to Year 6 are tracked and assessed with their progress monitored closely by the class teacher, ALN Co-ordinator and the SMT.

concerns or offer support outside of teaching time. This is in addition to the parent/carer meetings held throughout the year. We are also proud to have our curriculum supported by a variety of people from the local and wider community. All staff have undertaken training in preparation for the new Donaldson Curriculum and staff training on Safeguarding continues to be paramount. Welsh in Evenlode Primary The main language of Evenlode Primary is English. However, a number of staff are able to communicate fluently through the mediums of Welsh and English. Incidental Welsh is encouraged within school practice and all members of staff are encouraged to use the language as much as possible so that the children hear the language on a regular basis. The children have a daily ‘Hot-seating’ question and answer session where they practice a variety of language patterns and conversational phrases. Healthy Eating and Drinking Throughout Evenlode Primary school healthy eating and drinking is promoted through a variety ways. We encourage children to eat fruit at break times and the new tuck shop has been an invaluable addition to achieving this and also in developing the pupil’s entrepreneurial skills. So much so that money made from this venture has paid for a graffiti mural which you can see below. The importance of eating and drinking healthily is fostered through assemblies, science, cooking and PE lessons and classroom discussions. Poster competitions promoting healthy eating are held each school year. Children are encouraged to bring in water bottles for use during the day. We grow vegetables such as potatoes and pumpkins for soups and salads in our gardening clubs. Last year children took control of the new Fruit Tuck Shop, taking on the role of ordering and preparing produce. All children involved in the shop gained the Food Hygiene Level 1 qualification. The shop made over £800 and the money was used on projects which the children decided upon.

School Data The school, for the third year, along with every other school in Wales, has continued to be placed within the same group or ‘family of schools.’ These groupings- organised and administered by the Welsh Government, place schools, “like with like”- based upon several factors such as size of school, entitlement to free school meals, catchment regarding deprivation, ALN status and pupils with EAL. We as a school, have no influence on the groupings we are placed within. These are due to be reviewed in the forthcoming year. We are placed within Bench Mark Group One, which means that our Free School Meals number is between 2%-4%. Our current ‘family’ has 11 schools within it. The position within this family and the ordering of the schools within the family is based on the challenge index (1=greatest challenge). There are 10 primary and one junior school in our family. Evenlode Primary is the first most challenged school at Foundation Phase and the second most challenged at Key Stage 2. Therefore, statistically, we are expected to be in the higher quarter of the ‘family’ with regards to performance. We should point out however, that all of the other Family members are schools in ‘other’ authorities and receive between £220 and £725 more per pupil than Evenlode.

The Prospectus The school prospectus is currently only available in the printed format and is issued to all new members of the school community. This is updated annually. Toilets

The toilet provision for all pupils is good. The toilets were refurbished in 2010.

We have had issues with water pressure. This is still being currently investigated. The staff toilets require refurbishment. However, this will not be done until funds are available. The new hall toilets are excellent. Financial Statement The school has continued to manage its budget effectively throughout 2015 and into 2016. The financial outturn statement for the financial year 2015-2016 is below. This outlines the schools expenditure and income. The school has also received additional income from The Deputy Headteacher’s work for Central South Consortium

Thank You Finally, my thanks to you as parents, carers and volunteers for all the support you give the school throughout the year. Evenlode Primary is a school to be extremely proud of. It provides an environment and an ethos that helps to ensure that our children get the very best start in life. The Governors always welcome feedback and any comments you may wish to express. If you would like to contact me please do so through the school office. Ceri Griffiths Chair of Governors
