Genre’s importants when choosing a film at the cinema

There are lots of people in the world who all like different things from each other.Films have created different types of Genres to create a variety of choose for everyindividual person.

When people are at the cinema choosing a film they will normally judge if it’s their type offilm Genre they enjoy by, looking at who's in the film, looking at the poster and seeing if itlooks scary, a person standing alone in the dark and only there face lit up, what would givethe impression the film is a horror, or a guy a girl standing next to each other, what will

givethe impression to the audience the film is a Romance or a Rom-Com.

It’s important to make sure that your genre of film is advertised properly in the cinemaAs it can make or break your film. If people go to your film think it’s one genre and it turnsout to be another then this will create bad word of mouth, for example when Monsters

wasreleased in the cinema, it was advertised to be a Sci-Fi however, this film ended up being aflop, this is because the audience started to spread bad word of mouth saying ‘It burly hadAliens in it, the film was more focused on the love story.’ This shows/ demonstrates theimportance of the Genre of your film when it hits the big silver screen and what can gowrong if your film Genre is not clear and not advertised right.

How were these films promotedWhen we started talking about how tocreate our posters and film magazinescovers we decided to go back to our Initial research and look Kidulthood andAudlthood again to see how theypromoted them self's to their targetaudience. We deicide to look at these twomovies again as they where are mostheavily influanced films whilst, making astory, filming and editing our trailer.

After looking at a survey on Kidulthood, that was done by BFI, we found out the statistics of the strongest way the film was promoted. 211 people took this survey they where asked how they heard of the film, lots of people aid different ways such as, Newspaper/articles, TV ect. The most popular invested way people heard of the film was from the marketing techniques of Posters, what was 25% of people. However looking at Word of Mouth, which had 33% of people, this shows that rumors of the film was more of a effective way of Marketing rather than investing in the film.

Who Were Their Target AudeinceThe reason why we chose to look at Kidulthood again, isbecause it’s the same type of Social Realism as our film.Because Kidulthood is a film about gangs and coming of agethey needed to aim their film at the age groups of 15-24 yearolds and people who are seen as the pit of society, this isso that the audience would be able to relate to elements in thestory line and the characters. The characters can be veryimportant to the target audience especially in a Social Realismfilm. Because the film is also aiming at middle to lower classpeople, they have created characters who are in the same typeof class. This helps the film apple to their target audience byhaving really life situations and having teenage fears, in the filmthat the audience hope never to face, these situation are thingssuch as pregnancy, pressure, being put in the middle and morelife situation people come across whilst figuring out who theyare and growing up.

Target audience and our filmHow we are going to make our film noticed and apple to our target audience. Because are film is Social Realism and is about the gangster life style and living in the slums we need to be able to make it apple to these type of youths young adults who are living on the edge of life and think that they can relate to our characters situations they intail in our narrative. To be able to reach our film out to these people we can’t hold big events where our audience wont go to because they feel they won’t fit into the place and think it’s a different genre of film, we also need to make it cheap/ cost no money so that our audience don’t have to pay to get in somewhere to see a trailer and get free things as they might not have the money to that, we also need to go to them the reason why this is because they might just want to stay and do what their doing and not bother making a effort for a film that they could just ask people about once it comes out.

Target audience and our filmMy idea is to put up posters in towns and the town’s villages, have posters on bus stop shelters to get some people looking and talking between their friends about it. Then create a Facebook and Twitter fan page and invite a few people to join it and have big epic photos from the film on the page. Go around town with a camera and another person and ask 15-24 year olds if we can interview them and ask about there friendship life and ask if we can use it for our Facebook/ Twitter page, we will then be cheeky and ask them to like/ join are Facebook and Twitter page so that they can see there them about the Facebook and Twitter page and tell the people who have just been interviewed, that the interviews are going up on there and if they join/like the pages they will see themselves on the internet for a film. Two days before our film is released we will announce on our Facebook/ Twitter page that we are hosting a part in a basement up town (and hire out a venue) and say that its free for them to come tell there friends, after midnight we will open up a bar and the 18 will have to leave (but this is for there safety so they can get home safe), we will show the trailer at the start of the night, no one will be aloud in past this point and then the party will start. For people to find the party all they have to do is find and follow this sign there will be actors from the film there just walking around and being with the audience.

Launching FilmsKidulthood released March 2006Adulthood released June 2008Cherrybomb released 23rd April 2009

After looking up these Social Realism films and more, on IMDB, we noticed how a lot of this Genre get released whilst everyone is at school. The reason why this is, is because if a Social Realism film is released in the holidays then they have to compete with big main stream films, that all come out at the same time to get more of an audience and make more money. The only way a Social Realism film would be successful in releasing it’s film in the holidays is if the director or writer is big, or if the director/ writer has made Social Realism films before that have turned out to be a success, for example Noel Clarke Writer of Kidulthood, Director and Writer of Adulthood released both of these films whilst everyone was at school, because these films were such a big success when he realest his film 4,3,2,1 it was in June this about the time main stream films come out or start advertising themselves, creating a hip, this shows that he is more confident with his films, and that he is becoming well known that he its not sore much of a gamble releasing his film around this time. After doing this reach on Social Realism films and their release dates on IMDB we have decided to release are film in April after the Easter Holidays.

Ideas for promtionThe ideas for our poster came from the film Kidulthood. In Kidulthood their post has the Main cast all in the center of the photolooking hard and sitting in a position wherethey feel they are given power or sitting on the floor where they arevulnerable. The cast are also sitting on adingy wall, the background is also dark thiscould be a reflection on the film or on thejourneys that each character incurs; also inthe background of the photograph there aretall buildings from this we can tell that thefilm is set in the city and is about city youths/gang culture life. We also noticed howKidulthood had a tag line so we decided tocome up with one for ours. I ended upComing up with ‘If it’s a choice betweenfriends or family who would you choose?’ Ichose came up with this whilst doing arefilm magazine cover, the reason why Idecided this is because It interacts with aretarget audience by asking them a questionand gets them think, it also sums up thenarrative of the film into a short sentence, but it also doesn’t give to much away , it

givethe impression that the film could head of ina different direction..

Ideas for our PosterIdea for our film poster has been influenced from this poster. My idea is to have two main characters from each of the gangs (East and West side) standing on the side that they belong, the weather will be dark looking like its just about to rain or just stormed, in the middle of our actors. In the background we would have city flats to show its the slums and in the middle of the poster we will have the title name ‘Bruv’ and at the top have how many stars we have been giving and a part of a review.

A similar idea to the other one but with some differentness, to have a character from East side standing at one end of the photo (the east end) then have our main character standing at the other end of the photograph, both have their bodies facing the camera but their heads turned facing each other. Because there will be a big gap in between the two character we will use a wall or a garage in the background what has graffiti writing on it. Along the wall in the middle we will have the title Bruv

Another idea for our film poster is to have a actor from East side, actor from West side and our main actor. Our main actor will stand in the middle of the photograph up front, looking at the camera with his hands in his pockets making him seem innocent. We will then have our actors from the different sides standing behind him, with one of their hand, that’s closest to the middle, on his shoulders making it seem like there trying to pull him back, they will also be looking into the camera with a glare.

Empire Film MagazineBefore we stated looking at our magazine cover we decided who we wanted to advertise our film, we chose the magazine Empire, this is because Empire is a big magazine company that everyone had heard of, they advertise big main stream films a long with Indie films that they know will be successful with certain types of people. Once we decided on our magazines I started looking at other students work from previous years, who also chose Empire magazine, and looked at how they changed and laid out things. We looked at a number of Empire magazines online, and in the library to see what colours they normally use and how they normally lay everything out.
