Chairman's Statement

Welcome to EV+A 1989.

This year's Show is composed of New Work of Past Winners 1984 to 1988. Sixteen out of a possible seventeen past Prize Winners are participating. The last review of work by previous winners were in 1983 and this was a very successful show which travelled to Belfast and Dublin.

Young EV+ A continues to develop as our prime vehicle for encouraging the direct involvement of younger people in EV + A. With the continued sponsorship of GPA for this activity, Mike Fitzgerald has engaged a talented selection of young artists to demonstrate their work in the Gallery throughout the Exhibition. Adults are also encouraged to attend but school groups are especially welcome.

EV+A 1989 will also travel to the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin, the Crawford Gallery in Cork, and at least two other provincial venues.

In future EV+ A will take place in the Spring rather than the Autumn. The next EV + A will be in March 1990 and will revert to our successful format of open entry with a single foreign Adjudicator (whose identity is being kept a closely guarded secret). Application forms for entrants will be available in early November. It is hoped that in 1991 , the year of the Tercentenary Celebrations, there will be many special events of artistic importance and greater public impact. As ever, we will be relying greatly on the enthusiasm of the artists and the support of our sponsors and we are confident that this will be as forthcoming as it has been in the past.

It remains my pleasant duty for EV+ A 89 to thank profusely the Artists, our Sponsors (who will hopefully not feel too pummeled when we return with the begging bowls so early in 1990), the Arts Council for their scarce money and bountiful encouragement, Limerick Corporation for the use of the City Gallery of Art, Paul O'Reilly for his Curating stamina and all the Committee for their controlled panic in the face of constant uncertainty.

THE MAELSTROM

EV+A 89 seems to make a strange and unexpected kind of sense. In part, this comes about because the sixteen artists in it were chosen as a result of decisions made by six different adjudicators over the past five years.1 Bringing the recent works of these artists2 together in an exhibition provokes some rather startling thoughts on contemporary art in Ireland, ideas that are difficult to put into words with any feeling of confidence or pleasure. As usual, how much this EV+ A or any EV+ A accurately represents the state of Irish Contemporary art remains speculative. Even so EV+ A has something serious to say about the matter.

There is about EV + A 89 an air of deep pervasive pessimism. It seems to be unmistakably present in all the work to varying degrees and without exception. It may be that some of the work decidedly so, spreads contagion to other work, not fully so. But taken one by one, there seems not to be any work that offers positive respite from the dark, lost feelings that dominate the whole. In fact, so strong is the presence of this air of defeat and dread that it forces new and deeper interpretations onto the work of artists who heretofore were not so clearly understood as dealing with the dark sides of experience.

Every EV+ A exhibition in the past has had an element of dark pessimistic expression. These ideas and feelings in a wide variety of ways are common in contemporary art. What seems to be the case in EV+ A 89 is that over the past five years, the best work as judged by a wide range of expert opinion has been markedly committed to the expression of such feelings and ideas. That such a high level of excellence continues in the recent work of these artists is readily apparent in EV + A 89. The exhibition though disparate in its range of techniques, materials, media and representational bent from hard core abstraction to illustrative figuration

maintains the standards originally noted and set by each adjudicator. So the pessimism, the dark sense of pain, anguish, strife, of loss, foreboding and decay, of disorientation, frustration and indignation come wrapped in a variety of successful design strategies. It is all the more impressive and overpowering for them.

It would be proper here in mentioning particular artists work to mention all in some way. But I have not the heart to put words in print that will individually name or even try to indicate feelings that are so overwhelmingly dark and tragic. I may be incorrect in my judgement. I don't really want to prove that I am correct. The clues that point the way to these feelings are there in the general, massive dependence on a dark range of tonalities, in the severely restricted use of colour with tonal contrasts far outweighing hue contrasts and in the frantic, angry and anxious swirl of linear patterns that dominate decisions of structure and composition. Even in the case of figurative work that relies on middle tones, the feelings are those of loss, remorse or a tenuous, hesitant and insubstantial contact with the figures depicted.

Edgar Allen Poe's The Descent Into The Maelstrom3 has been used before as a metaphor for what artists do or should do to survive, what the artist in each of us, in everyone, can and must do to be truly an artisU survivor. The story should be read in full to gain all the dramatic effect the metaphor carries so here I briefly indicate its outline.

The story recounts the experience of a sailor and his brother who, when mistaking the time of day, were swept into the gigantic, whirling mass of a monstrous whirlpool or maelstrom which came and went at fixed times daily. Caught in its grasp and headed for certain drowning and

disintegration when they reached the bottom of the vortex, they kept to their vessel and struggled over the safest position onboard, (a metal ring pin bolted into the boat) a struggle the brother won and a position he refused to share. The sailor resigned himself to fate and certain death as the boat slowly but surely descended deeper into the fierce swirling watery tunnel, round and round in diminishing circles down the sucking hole. Released from doubt, hopeless, the sailor began to take a curious interest in what was happening around him. He noticed that amongst all the circling debris that moved around the wall of water with the boat- certain objects by virtue of their configuration of shape and form descended at a slower rate than others of different configuration. He calculated that the slowest of them might well escape being smashed on the rocky bottom below if they had not reached the bottom by the time the maelstrom eased its whirling and the sea returned to normal.

He determined to leave the boat grabbing onto such an object, a cask, and ride out the vortex with that dim hope of survival. He tried to convey this chance to his brother, who refused to budge from the safety of the ring pin. So, to this brother's horror, he leaped into the water grasping the cask. As he had hoped, his rate of descent slowed, the boat's increased as the vortex narrowed to the bottom. The maelstrom, as per its fixed schedule finally eased. The sea returned to its normal level. The sailor saved - the brother lost.

The sailor is the artist who in a situation fraught with confusion and fear is able, despit oppressive feelings of despair, to put that environment to the question, to search and find the patterns that obtain there, make decisions based on such pattern recognition, alter behaviour, taking the chance of going against normal, safe

procedures, and so survive. Whatever it is in each of us that enables us to act in a similar way is what makes each of us an artist. The artist in everyone is such a survivor. The atmosphere of EV +A 89 is definitely that of the maelstrom. The sense of oppression, anguish, suffering, the disorientation is unmistakable, however we choose to word it. These works point to such an environment, making of it a common one, one we all share. These works of art are the strategies the artists take based on how they make use of the patterns they have found. They aim for survival. Do they, in fact, survive? That question has to be asked. It is in the air at EV + A 89. The answer must come from each person in EV+ A 89's audience who takes the time to share in the sense of danger and despair that so strongly marks the work.

What or where is the maelstrom? It is our culture, our world everywhere. Just listen to the news and any other form of entertainment our culture offers. They form the roar as wealth and poverty move in the ever decreasing circles of a vortex. Listen too, to the contemporary artist who talk to us about survival.

YoungEV+ A

This year Young EV + A is involved with bringing young people, into contact with the artists featured in the exhibition. A number of artists will be available in the Gallery to discuss their work, demonstrate their work processes and techniques, and create new works in the atmosphere of the Gallery and the exhibition.

We invite teachers, students and interested persons to avail of this opportunity to meet the artists, partake in the creative process and develop a greater understanding of their work.

Biographical Note

Born Co. Limerick 1939. Worked in London and Dublin prior to studies at Limerick School of Art and Design 1965-69. Exhibited since 1968 in numerous group exhibitions including lELA 68, 70-72,81 , 87; Oireachtas 77-79; EV+ A 77, 80, 81, 83, 87, 88; Independent Artists 78; GPA Emerging Artists 82; SADE 82; Sculpture 88, Galway; Sculpture Open, Gallagher Gallery Dublin 1988; Acquisitions In Context, Limerick City Gallery 1988.

Born Dublin 1946. Studied Trinity College, Dublin, BBS 1969, Dun Laoghaire School of Art and Design Diploma 1980.

Exhibited since 1979 in numerous group exhibitions including Oireachtas 1979, 81 , 82; EV+A 1978,82, 85-88; Claremorris Open 1979, 80, 83, 85-87; Independent Artists 1981, 82, 85, 86; Figurative Image 1982, 83,85, 86, 88; GPA Awards 1981; lELA 1980, 81, 86.
