1. Executive summary

 Analysis was performed regarding the verification of the content and the up-to-date state of the University Training Materials, which had been uploaded and included into the training brokerage section of the EuroTraining Infrastructure during the previous projects, between 2004 and 2008.

 On the ET website the already existing and the new training materials have been merged and sorted to the categories of properties and made accessible and searchable also on the http://www.eurotraining.net/qbil.php web page.

 An electronic Abstract Book was prepared to extend the number of the audio-visual courses accessible through the EuroTraining website, by including these courses into the QBIL pool. The Abstract Book was extended to 56 teaching materials and courses and it is accessible and its PDF version is downloadable from the eurotraining.net website (from the http://www.eurotraining.net/qbil.php webpage).

 To check the effect of the efforts regarding the preparation of the Abstract Book, a survey for the analysis and evaluation of the included training materials were carried out. The evaluation of the results of the survey shows that most of the respondents have high expectations and optimistic opinion about nanotechnology, are interested in and would like to learn more about the different fields of this exciting new branch of science.

 An additional stimulation action was carried out, which aimed at the extension of the available multimedia (audio-visual) courses. A Call for training materials was sent out to selected universities whether they would be happy to cooperate with EuroTraining in education, mostly to give permission for sharing information about the courses. By the Call, the lecturers of the courses were informed about how the course contents were shared with the EuroTraining community. It was underlined that the main objective of the EuroTraining project is to provide a European Training Infrastructure facilitating the provision of high calibre training across Europe. All services offered are gathered on www.eurotraining.net, having 18 000 newsletter subscribers and about 20 000 annual users.

 The stimulation action resulted in the extension of the available multimedia (audio-visual) course supply of EuroTraining in the following three ways:

• Courses on the portals of professional networks;

• Videos on the YouTube social media;

• Audio-visual short courses developed by EuroTraining Partner COREP, directly accessible on the ET website’s multimedia platform and also through YouTube.

2. Objectives

In this task EuroTraining will categorize and make university training material available through the European Training Infrastructure (T4.1) and dedicated mailing lists. EuroTraining will act as a broker, i.e. act as an intermediary between a user and a provider of training material. With the training materials brokerage action EuroTraining will provide a European level reference tool for training providers, employed engineers, and learners.

The abstracts of the categorized training materials will be published in electronic format, stimulation actions will be carried out to collect and/or improve more content. The conclusions will be reported at M12 (D2.4.1). The goal is to collect a minimum of 25 course materials by the end of the first project year and by the stimulation action extend this number up to 50 by the end of the project.

An additional stimulation action will aim at the extension of the available multimedia courses. After a careful evaluation of the content of the categorized course materials, authors of selected courses will be invited to summarize their knowledge in a 60 minutes slide show, including the audio of their presentation as they are lecturing their short form course. The EuroTraining Infrastructure will provide on-demand accessibility to these audio-visual short courses. It will be also possible to deliver one-by-one these courses at an announced date and time, which would be advertised in due time through the social and professional networking portals like Twitter and Facebook.

3. Analyses of Existing Training Materials in Year 1

Analysis was performed regarding the verification of the content and the up-to-date state of the University Training Materials, which had been uploaded and included into the training brokerage section of the EuroTraining Infrastructure during the previous projects, usually between 2004 and 2008. The results were summarized in Table 1.

Materials were indicated as “Not so interesting” if its scientific merit is not too high (e.g. Chemical Storage and Labeling) or not up-to-date (e.g. Microelectronics Roadmaps from 2006).

Specific knowledge – not up-to-date means that the material is expired (prior to 2005) and the field covered is specific (e.g. Low-k Inter-layer dielectric (ILD) materials). It should be noted that “General knowledge” does not expire basically (e.g. An introduction to Atomic Layer Deposition).

The result of the analysis shows that 62 from 102 courses and materials are general knowledge and they do not expire, and 84 from 102 courses and materials are still up-to-date. Corrective actions were taken, and the not up-to-date materials were removed from the Eurotraining website. http://www.eurotraining.net/tmaterial.php

This webpage (Figure 1) hosts a series of preparatory training courses ready to be integrated within existing academic engineering programmes at colleges and universities. Among others, the course components include mathematics, chemistry and mechanics of microsystems technologies. We kindly invite experts in this field, not only to download training material, but also to participate in this initiative by sharing their own educational components.

4. Abstract Book: Selected Best Training Materials

The electronic Abstract Book has been prepared for the following two purposes:

• to offer short courses of webcast format for the audience of the Train-the-Trainers courses to be selected some of them for presentation in the T-t-T course program;

• to extend the number of the audio-visual courses ac cessible through the EuroTraining website, by including these courses in to the QBIL pool.

After a continuous selection and extension process, by the end of the EuroTraining Project the Abstract Book contains short descriptions of 56 webinars and webcasts. The abstracts are sorted into five categories: 1. Technology, Synthesis, Fabrication (13 abstracts); 2. Materials properties and performance (7 abstracts); 3. Characterisation techniques (13 abstracts); 4. Nanoelectronics and other applications (20 abstracts); 5. Useful tools (3 abstracts).

The electronic Abstract Book is accessible and its PDF version is downloadable from the eurotraining.net website (from the http://www.eurotraining.net/qbil.php webpage). The header of each abstract contains the link to the course site, so in this way all courses are accessible and available through the ET website.

The cover page of the Abstract book is shown in Figure3.

5. Extension of the Multimedia Course Supply

An additional stimulation action was carried out, which aimed at the extension of the available multimedia (audio-visual) courses. After a careful evaluation of the content of the categorized course materials included into the QBIL pool (http://www.eurotraining.net/qbil.php) and offered by the downloadable electronic Abstract Book, authors of selected courses were invited to permit the inclusion of their audio-visual presentations or the short introduction of their courses for the extension of EuroTraining’s course supply. The ET Infrastructure provides on-demand accessibility to these audio-visual short courses directly from EuroTraining website, through the professional network portals or by offering links to social media like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

A Call for training materials was sent out to selected US, Far East and European universities whether they would be happy to cooperate with EuroTraining in education, mostly to give permission for sharing information about the courses, and to be registered as course provider on the ETI website. Since the EuroTraining project has had temporary institutional competence, long-lasting institutional cooperation could not be established with them, but sufficient information was collected about these universities, which was useful to be shared with the EuroTraining community.

The Call for training material was addressed to selected US, Far East and European universities through the lecturers or contact persons identified and published in the electronic Abstract Book and in the QNET network pool. For addressing the European universities, the excellent deliverable report of EuroTraining Partner, the Technical University of Denmark, regarding the “Overview of European programs at master and PhD level with a focus on components and system design in the More-than-Moore domain and in the Beyond CMOS domain” (D2.1.1) was also used. For identifying the interested European universities, the ec-nanotechnology-research-mapping_en.pdf, accessible on and downloadable from the European Commission’s website, also provided a very good source.

By the Call, the lecturers of the courses were informed about how the course contents were shared with the EuroTraining community, by their inclusion on the ET website. It was underlined that the main objective of the EuroTraining project is to provide a European Training Infrastructure facilitating the provision of high calibre training across Europe. All services offered are gathered on www.eurotraining.net, having 15 000 newsletter subscribers and about 20 000 annual users.

The information referred to the type of sharing, i.e. that the abstract, a short introduction, an introductory slide series, an introductory presentation or video, and some sample content of the course were placed on the ETI website together with a link to the course. In this way more visibility to their activities are given by making them available globally for use in accordance with the Creative Commons license terms. They were also encouraged to use any teaching material or courses available on www.eurotraining.net for their own educational activity. The lecturers were requested to visit the eurotraining.net website, check how it worked, and give comments regarding their concerns and/or advice.

The Call also contained questions whether responsible lecturers would plan to update the course and/or its introductory material and/or to make improvements in the

introductory presentation of the course. They were also asked about the availability of other courses with similar content that might be offered for inclusion.

The stimulation action resulted in the extension of the available multimedia (audio-visual) course supply of EuroTraining in the following three ways:

• Courses on the portals of professional networks;

• Videos on the YouTube social media;

• Audio-visual short courses developed by EuroTraining Partner COREP, directly accessible on the ET website’s multimedia platform and also through YouTube.

5.1. Courses on the Portals of Professional Networks EuroTraining initiated international cooperation and has taken part in global networks, in order to increase European knowledge and skills at the frontier of nanoelectronics technology and miniaturized electronic systems and to enable European partnerships for further world-wide collaborations. In particular the cooperation with such universities and institutions was preferred, which have advanced educational and training practice in the field of nanoelectronics and micro-/nanosystems, including world-wide accessible Internet based multimedia courses. A number of such world class universities were identified mostly in the USA and were listed on the http://www.eurotraining.net/cooperation.php webpage. The list contains the links, the abstracts of activities and direct links to the educational materials of each network.

The USA networks are generally based on universities, supported by NSF (the National Science Foundation) through long term projects. Their aim is to teach nanotechnology for all levels and ages, including kids, teachers of secondary schools, undergraduate and graduate students, and even retired seniors. The portals provide free access to very rich and high level educational materials.

A good example is nanoHUB.org, the unique resource for nanoscience and nanotechnology of Purdue University (Figures 7 and 8).

Abstract: Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on the atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale. A generalized description of nanotechnology was subsequently established by the National Nanotechnology Initiative, which defines nanotechnology as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. This definition reflects the fact that quantum mechanical effects are important at this quantum-realm scale.

6. Conclusions on the Audio-Visualisation Action

The Abstract Book was extended to 56 teaching mater ials and courses and it is accessible and its PDF version is downloadable from the eurotraining.net website (from the http://www.eurotraining.net/qbil.php webpage).

To check the effect of the efforts regarding the preparation of the Abstract Book, a survey for the analysis and evaluation of the included training materials were carried out. The evaluation of the results of the survey shows t hat most of the respondents have high expectations and optimistic o pinion about nanotechnology, are interested in and would like to learn more about the different fields of this exciting new branch of sci ence.

An additional stimulation action was carried out, which aimed at the extension of the available multimedia (audio-visual) courses. A Call for training materials was sent out to selected universities whether they would be happy to cooperate with EuroTraining in education, mostly to give permissio n for sharing information about the courses.
