thesis statement

I would like to thoroughly explore the relation between individuality, collectivity, and

anonymity. I am interested in creating a visual representation of how the singular

identity of a person, object, or structure can be forgotten or even obscured when

it becomes just a ‘part’ of a larger group. I would like to non-verbally communicate

some of these relationships through the use of my own photographs that will serve

to show just how visually the two conditions coexist. The purpose of this project will

not be to undermine anything but merely create a juxtaposition between the singu-

larity and the collective machine.

design proposal

I will be taking photographs of everyday objects that coexist within the individuality

and collectivity. I would like to place my images side by side to create this space of

juxtaposition. I hope that my photographs will be able to communicate my concept

without verbally having to explain everything. There will be a transition from one im-

age of a singular identity to the way it can become part of a collecitive group.


observation

Upon more research, I have become increasingly more drawn towards abstract

shapes and organic free forms that are made up of a collective form. Sculptures and

installations by Suh Doh Ho, Tara Donovan, and Yee Soo Kyung experiment with this

idea with their own approaches. Many of their works take on natural forms but stay

within the idea that the singular can become a collective.

Spencer Tunick’s installations encompass dozens, hudrends of

thousands of volunteers; And his photographs are records of these
