Networking

Networking

The tight relationship that Ghent University established with the

Directorate General of Higher Education (MOEYS) in the

framework of the EMA2 Lotus projects:

1. the impact that the involvement of DGHE in the promotion of

our Lotus projects had on the number of applications from

Cambodia

2. resulted in the joint organization of a workshop on Academic

Recognition in November 2014 in Cambodia

3. strong involvement in the new project proposal (Erasmus+ -

Networking

2. Joint workshop on Academic Recognition and Credit Transfer

in November 2014 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

• Joint cooperation DGHE with 5 EU HEI’s representing 9 EMA2 projects on

Asia Regional & including 1 EU HEI with an EMA3 project

• More than 200 HEI’s from 29 countries from both EU and Asia present

• DGHE, MOEYS: sponsored several Cambodian universities to be present

• Opening speech, H.E Pit Chamnan, Secretary of State of MoEYS

OUTCOME:

• Cambodia’s HEI’s gained better understanding of EMA2.

• The EMA2 coordinators promised to continue having good cooperation

with DGHE, especially in writing proposal to request fund from Erasmus+

(Erasmus Plus), which is supported by European Union, to further enhance

the capacity of Cambodia’s higher education institutions.

• For UGent: even tighter relationship with partners

Networking

3. Strong involvement in the new project proposal “NutriSEA”

(Erasmus+ - Key action 2 – Capacity building in the field of HE).

• Overview of key focussing points for Cambodia in this specific field by

DGHE

• Suggestion of new partner institution: Chea Sim University of

Kamchaymear (CSUK)

• Royal University of Agriculture (RUA)

Associated member in Lotus III

full partner in Lotus Unlimited

full partner in NutriSEA

• MOEYS committed itself as a full partner

Capacity building and how Ghent University intends to tackle

this in the framework of the new project

“NutriSEA”

Capacity building

NutriSEA:

The project is specifically targetting the food sector, which represents

a large share of the agriculture in the countries concerned

Coordinating institution: Ghent University

Partners:

• 5 EU: UPS (FR), Goettingen University (DE), University of Porto

(PT), Wageningen University (NL), Campden BRI Magyarorszag

Nonprofit Korlatolt Felelossegu Tarsa (HU)

• 8 SEA:

– Cambodia: RUA + CSUK + MOEYS

– Vietnam: HUST + Hué University + MOET

– Myanmar: YAU + University of Yangon

Associates: 6 both from EU and SEA (e.g. Daun Penh Group)

Capacity building

NutriSEA:

Project aim:

• To build HR capacity to ensure a sustainable food value chain

model based on entrepreneurship and creating added value to the

natural resources supporting food production in Southeast Asia

(Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar).

• To enhance university-enterprise cooperation as well as

regional and (inter)national cooperation and networking.

• To put a strong focus on teaching methodologies, including the

use of ICT, and enterprises will be actively involved in defining

learning outcomes and offering internship

Capacity building - NutriSEA

Train the trainer: staff EU SEA & SEA EU

• academic trainers (Regional Food Training Team): language skills,

research skills, soft skills and teaching methodologies , general

knowledge on management ....

• Tech Transfer staff : technology transfer, entrepreneurship and

transferable skills

be reinforced via the Tech Transfer offices and will boost innovation.

Capacity building - NutriSEA

Link Capacity Building and “Creating added value”.

• To set-up or reinforce Technology Transfer Units at the partner

Different stories of close cooperation – 1st example

Agreement with Daun Penh Group, Cambodia

• The contract with the Daun Penh Group was established in

September 2014 after 6 months of negociations in september

“SAKRUM is a blond top fermented beer with the refermentation in the

bottle. It is full bodied with delicious flavor nuances and a slight

sweetness. The aftertaste of Sakrum is soft, fresh and in balance.

Enjoy Sakrum cooled and in the appropriate glass. Sakrum beer is

based on a recipe of the oldest Belgian brewing institute, Ghent

University Association Anno 1887.”

Higher Education

• Research-Based Learning in Medical Education

• Needs assessment in the field of Family Medicine in Cambodia

*Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance

(VVOB) was founded in 1982 as a non-profit organisation

Different stories of close cooperation – 2nd example

Department of Digistive Surgery, Ghent University, Prof. Dr.

Piet Pattyn (cooperation of ca. 20 yrs)

• Creation of a reference centre for gastrointestinal tumours in

Cambodia (financed by VLIR-UOS)

• 2007 - 2012

• Cambodia

• Prof. Kheang Yana, University of Health Sciences

Improvement of public health because:

• The number of gastrointestinal carcinoma is increasing

• The medical care programme has an inadequate performance.

• A specialised health care programme

• for gastrointestinal carcinoma is non-existing.

• There is an absence of health care education at the level of the

population.

Different stories of close cooperation – 3rd example

• Academic objectives

Introduction of a gastrointestinal oncology programme

at the University Hospital ASKH because:

• A general medical oncological programme at

the ASKH campus in the Centre Marie Curie already exists.

• A gynaecological-oncological programme is already started by the

French cooperation (prof. Lansac and prof. Schraub).

• There is a good surgical base around prof. Yana and dr. Lem.

• A surgical oncological programme has to be introduced with important

horizontal (departments of gastroenterology, pathology and

anaesthesia) and vertical (provincial hospitals) interaction.

Different stories of close cooperation – 3rd example

• Sustainability beyond the borders of the projects &

perspectives:

Further networking opportunities:

• Asian Federation of Surgery

• Cambodian Society of Surgery

• National Cancer Institute

• International Institute for Radiation

• World Bank

• the new ongoing project
