Writing conventions

This symbol points out hazards that can lead to non-functional configurations, data loss, equipment damage or even personal injury.

This symbol followed by smaller text highlights important background information and tips.

Text output = is used to show screen content of a character based display. <Date> = "smaller than" and "greater than" signs are used to show variables which are to be replaced by actual values. "Menu Item"= Commands, menu items, names of buttons, options, variables, file names and path names.

The following assumes that the ETERNUS DX60 S2 is switched on with both POWER and READY LEDs on the front panel lit green.

Firmware Update Process Check Prerequisites

1) Log on to the ETERNUS Web GUI using the service user account "f.ce".

2) Check System Status (GUI) prior to the operation.

3) Check that the overall system status is green.

4) Check the status of RAID Groups and Volumes to ensure that none of the following processes is ongoing: Rebuild/Copyback The status can be verified from menu "RAID Group Status". Logical Device Expansion The status can be verified from menu "RAID Group Status". LU Format The status can be verified from menu "Volume Status". Concatenation is not in operation. The status can be verified from menu "Volume Status". Migration is not in operation. The status can be verified from menu "Volume Status".

5) Setup Power Linkage to disabled - in the case it is enabled.

Prepare for Firmware Update Process

6) Set the Maintenance Mode ON.

7) Confirm that the Maintenance Mode is ON.

When Maintenance Mode is ON, the System does not send out error messages.

8) As a safety precaution, export the configuration information to be able to restore it should the system report configuration errors after the procedure.

9) Check the version numbers of the available firmware versions.

Start Firmware Update Process

10) Next we need to register the new firmware.

This procedure only saves the new firmware on the system disks. If this version already exists then an error message is shown.

11) For the firmware upgrade we choose "only Update".

12) We can choose to do the update procedure either offline or online. Offline means that the firmware is downloaded to the controllers and updated during the next power cycle. Online means that the firmware will be updated concurrent and non-disruptive during normal I/O operation.

The waiting time has to be set to meet the requirements of the connected hosts (path checking parameters).

13) Now we can click on "Update Firmware".

14) Before the update is executed the system is diagnosed.

15) After the diagnostics is finished the system is ready to start the update.

At this point a functional multipath solution must exist to enable uninterrupted host access.

16) After clicking "Next" the system prepares itself for the update.

17) Click on "Next".

18) The update is started.

19) The firmware update starts with the Controller Module 1 (CM#1).

20) In the next step all paths to CM#1 are verified.

Please check that all cables are connected.

21) Click on "Next".

22) The system prepares itself for updating the firmware of the CM#0.

If the management PC is connected only to CM#0, at this point it is necessary to connect the cable to CM#1 because in the next step the CM#0 reboots and the Management LAN is switched to the other controller.

23) Click on "Verify Connection" so that the controller can verify the correct LAN connection.

24) A connection check is performed.

25) If the verification is successful the "Next" button is activated.

26) Now the data paths to CM#0 must be disconnected. Then click “Next”

27) After a successful path checking, the concurrent firmware update starts.

28) After the update all paths should be reconnected. When done click on "Next".

29) This completes the update.

Verify Firmware Update

30) Choose "Storage System Status" under "Status" to verify that the system is operating normally.

To re-enable error tracking it is very important to set the Maintenance Mode to OFF.

31) Choose "Start/End Maintenance" under "Maintenance". Click on "End".

32) Verify again normal system operation.

33) If necessary, re-enable UPS functionality.

Before Moving to the Next Workplace Log off from the ETERNUS Web GUI Leave the system running
