Reopening Plan for St. Alphonsus Church As I mentioned last week, we have begun the reopening process of St. Alphonsus Church on a limited basis. We have already celebrated a few baptisms and funerals and this weekend begin the institution of weekend Masses for St. Alphonsus and St. Patrick parishioners. However, there will be some differences to our liturgies than in the past. Here are some important points to remember before coming to church:

If you want to attend a weekend Mass, you must make a reservation through our Parish Office at (630) 257-2414. Our Parish Office Hours are 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and we ask that you speak to an Office worker. We will not accept voicemails/messages for reservations.

Unfortunately, due to the reservation guidelines from the Archdiocese of Chicago, we will not be able to allow “walk-ins” to our weekend Masses.

The limit on attendees in the Archdiocese of Chicago per Mass is 20% of our total church seating capacity, while maintaining proper social distancing. St. Alphonsus Church has a seating capacity of 300 people in our main church. Thus, our total amount allowed per Mass is 60 people.

We ask that people be conscious of everyone’s desire to attend Mass in the church and we want to provide the opportunity to do so. So please limit your reservations to 1-2 per month.

We advise that the elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions, please stay at home and participate through our televised Masses.

We ask that if you have a cough, a high temperature, or are not feeling well, please do not register to attend.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has mentioned that all the faithful present at a liturgy are required to wear a mask. We ask that you please bring your own mask. If you do not have one, we have a limited supply at the church.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled Mass time. Please follow our Team Members’ instructions and follow all signs and

markings. If you are no longer able to attend Mass you previously registered for, we

ask that you please inform the Parish Office. We will continue to record and upload our Sunday Masses on our website,

st-als.org, our St. Alphonsus Church Facebook page and our St. Alphonsus Church YouTube channel.

Please note that Cardinal Cupich’s dispensation from Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation continues for the next few weeks.

When you arrive at church, you will notice some definite changes during the Mass. Some of those include: 1) Church seating is designated for social distancing by individuals and families/couples. 2) There will be no formal collection of donations. Instead, there will be a locked box where people can place their donations/parish envelopes. 3) There will be no Presentation of the Gifts. 4) The procedure for receiving Holy Communion will be altered. An usher will invite people to approach the priest/Communion Minister pew by pew. I know that these are but a few examples of changes that we have had to deal with as a society and Catholic community since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, through our strength and support of each other, we can overcome the obstacles we face and continue to praise God in a great way.

Welcome Guests and Visitors. . . We’re so glad that you’re here and invite you to join us in thanksgiving for God’s action in our lives. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. In this way, we believe that the Church is the sacrament of God’s saving presence in the world.

“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult (the Mass does not end until the final blessing).

Worship reverently enough not to distract. Dress proudly enough not to offend.”

We have started to accept reservations for Mass. Eventually we will also offer reservations online. Please call the Parish Office between 9am-2pm at 630-257-2414 to reserve your place. If you leave a voice mail, it does not confirm you have a reservation. Space is limited and in consideration of other parishioners, we ask at this time that you only reserve one Mass during the month. Due to the restrictions on attendance, walk-ins will not be allowed. We will accept reservations for the following Masses:

June 20 Saturday 4:00pm June 21 Sunday 7:30am June 21 Sunday 9:00am June 21 Sunday 11:00am

June 27 Saturday 4:00pm June 28 Sunday 7:30am June 28 Sunday 9:00am June 28 Sunday 11:00am

We understand that some people may not be ready or able to return to Mass yet. We will continue to

post a Sunday Mass on our website, our Facebook page, and our YouTube Channel. You may also watch Sunday Mass from the Archdiocese of Chicago at www.archchicago.org or on WLS-TV ABC

Channel 7, or from Mercy Home on Sunday morning at 9:30am on WGN-TV Channel 9.

Renew My Church We are in the process of forming the Mass Schedule for the new parish. A number of factors will help decide the Mass Schedule, includ-ing the number of attendees at each Mass, the number of volunteer ministers and the availability of priests to celebrate Mass. Needless to say, the Mass Schedule for the new parish will be presented in a different fashion, especially dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please be patient as we try to serve the new parish in the best way possible.

Religious Education Update

Kevin Cody, DRE, 630-257-2371, [email protected], www.st-als.org/rel-edu

CONFIRMATION & FIRST COMMUNION As of June 8th, we have no news related to plans on celebrating these sacraments. We will send email blasts as soon as we get information.

WELCOME BACK! A huge sign that we are making progress through this pandemic is being able to gather and worship together in the Mass… at least on a limited basis. We have missed you! We missed having our end of the program year celebrations and good-byes. We missed not holding our 5th consecutive Summer Intensive with its daily morning skits on the saints, lessons about God’s Creation under blue skies, and fun faith projects & activities. The quarantine has brought a new appreciation for our faith community and the joy that comes with gathering together. What an appropriate weekend to return to Mass… when we celebrate Corpus Christi and we can once again receive the Eucharist! Alleluia!

CORPUS CHRISTI – HOW CAN WE CELEBRATE IT AS A FAMILY? This feast celebrates the Real Presence of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the elements of the Eucharist. It was proposed by St. Thomas Aquinas, and Pope Urban IV in 1264. It sets Catholics apart from Protestants, who suppressed the feast following the Reformation, and most denominations don’t recognize it to this day. Outside Lutheranism, which maintained the confession of the Real Presence, many Protestants denied the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist other than as a merely symbolic or spiritual presence. You can simply celebrate Corpus Christi by hanging a crucifix in your home. If you already have one (or two), try moving them to a spot where you see them everyday. Just moving them to a new place will make them more noticeable to the family.

MASS & ME GOSPEL REFLECTION QUESTIONS The following can help you to engage your children in today’s Mass. John 6:51-58: Today’s Gospel passage recounts the feeding of the 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. Jesus wants the crowds to understand that he has come to give them “living bread.” • What are your family meals like? Is there something you could do to make them less rushed, more of a family time, more nourishing for your spirits? • Eucharist means thanksgiving. How do you give thanks in your daily life? • Eucharist is about unity. Is there anything that divides your community or this country? How can receiving the “living bread” help? Eucharist is about being the Body of Christ for others. How can you be Jesus for others this week?

Please keep Fr. Brian, our Unification Team, and the Renew My Church consultants in your prayers as we move toward forming a new parish with St. Patrick.

Readings for the Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ

A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy Dt 8:2–3, 14b–16a Moses said to the people: “Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep his commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers, in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD. “Do not forget the LORD, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery; who guided you through the vast and terrible desert with its saraph serpents and scorpions, its parched and waterless ground; who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock and fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your fathers.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps 147:12–13, 14–15, 19–20 R. (12) Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion. For he has strengthened the bars of your gates; he has blessed your children within you. R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. He has granted peace in your borders; with the best of wheat he fills you. He sends forth his command to the earth; swiftly runs his word! R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. He has proclaimed his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances to Israel. He has not done thus for any other nation; his ordinances he has not made known to them. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians 1 Cor 10:16–17 Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Jn 6:51–58 Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
