• Winston is physically strengthened by the energy he gains from the relationship with Julia. Winston ‘had dropped his habit of drinking gin at all hours.’ He no longer feels the need to numb his emotions as he feels hope that he is experiencing life as a true human being. Similarly his varicose ulcer which causes him so much pain in the beginning of the novel ‘subsided’. Symbolically, the ulcer may represent what Winston was forced to hold in, his hatred of the Party and its destruction of humanity. With Julia in the room above Mr Charrington’s shop Winston ‘had no longer any impulse to ‘shout curses at the top of his voice.’
