1. Introduction to the ModuleThis module is an introductory language module

for students who need an introduction to Spanish at absolute beginner level. It focuses on all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in an integrated approach, introduces key structures and vocabulary relevant to topics studied, and provides initial insights into Hispanic society and culture. It combines a communicative approach to language with the development of basic reading and writing skills. The module will develop students’ language competence, which will enhance employability.

2. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge and understanding

1. Demonstrate that they understand everyday vocabulary and basic grammar and interact orally in a simple way with someone who speaks Spanish slowly and clearly.

2. Read and write simple clear messages in Spanish.

Intellectual, practical, affective and transferable skills

1. Demonstrate that they have followed a programme of independent activities in support of learning.

2. Demonstrate understanding of basic Hispanic social and cultural formations.

3. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS AND CLASS PARTICIPATION (10%)

Attending all the classes is very important and one of the best ways to help students succeed in this subject. Students are expected to arrive on time and take an active part during the classes. If they are unable to attend a class for a valid reason (e.g.: illness), they should contact the teacher.

Continued absence can result in the termination of their registration as they will be considered to have withdrawn from their studies.

4. ASSIGNMENTS (10%) AND ASSESSMENTS (60%)

All coursework assignments and other forms of assessment must be submitted by the published deadline. It is student’s responsibility to know when work is due to be submitted – ignorance of the deadline date will not be accepted as a reason for late or non-submission.

Examination / Assessment scripts are retained by Chiang Mai University and are not returned to students. However, students are entitled to feedback on their performance in an examination and may request a meeting with the teacher to see their examination script and to discuss their performance.

Spanish Film Club (4%) Once per month, on Wednesdays: Cultural activities

are the ideal complement to the classroom experience. They are designed to give closer insight into socio-cultural aspects of our language, in a more leisurely way. During the semester, we program the Spanish Film Club, an out-of-class activity, in which students have the opportunity to watch and discuss contemporary Spanish films in order to achieve a global vision of the Spanish society and culture.

6. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA AND MARKING STANDARDS

Range of vocabulary and structures, grammatical accuracy and correct spelling and task completion and quality of information are the main criteria for the assessment paper.

Mid/ term assessment represents 30% of the total mark for the module and the final one represents another 30%.

The use of dictionaries/textbooks/notes during the assessment is not allowed.

All questions must be answered in Spanish.

7. ASSESSMENT OFFENCES

Students are reminded that any work that they submit must be their own. When they are preparing their work for submission, it is important that they understand the various academic conventions that they are expected to follow in order to make sure that they do not leave theirselves open to accusations of plagiarism (e.g.: the correct use of referencing, citations, footnotes etc.) and that their work maintains its academic integrity.

Plagiarism is theft and constitutes the presentation of another’s work as your own in order to gain an unfair advantage.

WHY LEARN SPANISH?SPANISH FOR BEGINNERS

Spanish is a popular second or third language: with some 400 million speakers, it's the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world (after English, Chinese and Hindustani), and according to some counts it has more native speakers than English does. It is an official language on four continents and is of historical importance elsewhere.

The numbers alone make Spanish a good choice for those wanting to learn another tongue. But there are plenty of other reasons to learn Spanish. Here are a few:

Better understanding of English: Much of the vocabulary of English has Latin origins, much of which came to English by way of French. Since Spanish is also a Latin language, you will find as you study Spanish that you have a better understanding of English. Similarly, both Spanish and English share Indo-European roots, so their grammars are similar. There is perhaps no more effective way to learn English grammar than by studying the grammar of another language.

Travel: Yes, it is perfectly possible to visit México, Spain and even Ecuatorial Guinea without speaking a word of Spanish. But it isn't nearly half as much funTime and time again while traveling in Mexico, Central America and South America I have had doors opened to me simply because I speak Spanish, allowing me to see and do things that many other visitors do not.

Cultural understanding: When I read Latin American or Spanish newspapers, for example, I often find that I gain a sense of how other people think and feel, a way that is different than my own. Spanish also offers a wealth of literature, both modern and traditional.

Learning other languages: If you can learn Spanish, you'll have a head start in learning the other Latin-based languages such as French and Italian. And it will even help you learn Russian and German, since they too have Indo-European roots and have some characteristics (such as gender and extensive conjugation) that are present in Spanish but not English.

It's easy: Spanish is one of the easiest foreign languages to learn. Much of its vocabulary is similar to English's, and written Spanish is almost completely phonetic: Look at almost any Spanish word and you can tell how it is pronounced. And while mastering the grammar of Spanish can be a challenge, basic grammar is straightforward enough that you can have meaningful communication after only a few lessons.

Employment opportunities: Wherever you live, if you're in any occupation that involves international trade, business, communications or tourism, you'll similarly find opportunities to use your new language skills.

It's fun: Whether you enjoy talking, reading, or mastering challenges, you'll find all of them in learning Spanish. For many people, there's something inherently enjoyable about successfully speaking in another tongue. Although learning a language can be work, the efforts pay off quickly when you finally get to use your skills.

For many people, Spanish offers the most rewards with the least effort of any foreign language. It's never too late to begin learning.
