London Transport Museum Pre-visit notes for teachers

London Transport Museum has a rich and varied collection which tells the story of transport in London over the last 200 years. These worksheets have been developed to aid tutors on an independent visit to the Museum with their students. Each level has pre-visit, during-visit and post-visit lesson plan and student handouts.

00.0 Introduction

Ask students how they get to college. Discuss the pros, cons and personal preferences of each. 00.10 Vocabulary building

Split students into groups of two or three. Ask them to discuss and write down as many words and phrases as they can, connected with the topic of transport. Ask students to organize their words and phrases into vocabulary groups, e.g. Methods of transport, people, places…

Ask a member of each group to feedback their words and phrases to the rest of the class.

00.30 Identifying and discussing forms of transport Pre-visit handout 1: Cards Pre-visit handout 1a: Card game instructions

Students will work in groups of two or three. Before the lesson print and cut out enough sets of picture cards on Pre-visit handout 1: Cards for each group to have a set. Keep students in their groups. Give each group of students a set of cards face down and a copy of Pre-visit handout 1a: Card game instructions.

Ask students to randomly pick six cards as a group and put the rest of the set to one side. Students take it in turns to turn over a card and discuss the questions on Pre-visit handout 1a: Card game instruction with the rest of their group. For the last 10 minutes of this activity, exchange knowledge and experiences as a class.

01.00 Comparing and Categorizing Pre-visit handout 2: Comparing

For this activity students stay in their groups and use the whole set of cards. Ask students to arrange the cards so that they can all be seen.



Read out the descriptions of pairs of cards from Pre-visit handout 2: Comparing. Askstudentstolistenandidentifytwocardsthatfitthedescriptionforeachofthesentences below. • Both pictures show buses but one of them is older then the other.

• Both pictures show water transport but one carries passengers.

• Both boats are used for water sports but one of them needs the wind.

• Both the pictures show animals but one of them is in a cold climate.

• Both the pictures show trains but one of them is more old fashioned than the other.

Give a copy of Pre-visit handout 2: Comparing to each student. Ask the students to underline any words or phrases that describe similarities or differences. In their groups, ask students to select six pairs of pictures that have something in common. e.g. land, sea, air, animals, engine power.

Using Pre-visit handout 2: Comparing as a guide, ask the students to write sentences which are similar to the ones in the previous exercise. Exchange sentences and pairs of cards with other groups and see if they can match up the pictures with the student’s sentences.

01.45 Focus on the museum Pre-visit handout 3: Types of transport in the Museum

Students will need to bring this handout to the Museum for part of their visit.

Lead a discussion on what they expect to see in the Museum. (This is an opportunity to revisit vocabulary from previous activities). Point out that the Museum covers transport in London from the past, present and future.

Give each student a copy of Pre-visit handout 3: Types of transport in the Museum. Ask students to predict what they think they will see in the Museum by ticking the appropriate boxes on the sheet.

Discuss the uses of positive / negative expressions with students. As a class, complete tasks 1 and 2 on Pre-visit handout 4: Museum phrases.

Upon arrival at the museum distribute During visit handout 1:Things I like and don’t like, and During visit handout 2: Types of transport in the museum. As the students to walk around the museum, they should choose several objects / exhibits that they like and several that they dislike. They can use During visit handout 1: Things I like and don’t liketorecordtheirfindings. Students record their likes and dislikes by drawing pictures of their chosen objects / exhibits in the appropriate boxes (If students have access to a camera they can also take



picturesastheywalkround),therearenineboxestofillin.Undereachboxthereis a sentence to describe how they feel about their chosen object/ exhibit. The last three sentences need to be completed by the student.

00.00 Introduction Post-visit Handout 1: The Museum Visit

Ask students to get into small groups and discuss the questions from the handout about their time at the Museum.

If they have photographs from the visit, ask them to show their group and tell them what they thought of the exhibit(s) and why.

00.15 Discussion questions

Get students to refer to the Handouts they used during their Museum visit - During-visit Handout 1: Things I like and don’t like and During visit handout 2: Types of transport in the Museum.

Deal out the cards from the Pre-visit lesson. In their group, ask the students to sort them into two piles:

• things that they saw in the museum • things that they didn’t see in the museum

Ask the students to feedback as a class using an interactive whiteboard or large pictures. Display each picture in turn and ask the students to say whether it was or wasn’t in the museum.

Discuss as a class, any other forms of transport that they saw in the museum.

00.30 Listening Post-visit Handout 2: Transcript Post-visitSoundfile

Explain to the students that they are going to hear some people talking about how they feel about different forms of transport. Discuss some positive and negative words to describe transport, e.g. comfortable, convenient, unreliable, expensive.

Write these questions on the board:

a. What forms of transport are mentioned?


b. How does the person feel about it?

Play each example again in turn and ask students to discuss the answers in pairs. Hand out a copy of the transcript and ask students to underline words and phrases that tell us how the people feel. Discuss whether they agree with the opinions.

Questions 1 and 2 should be answered individually with the students comparing with a partner afterwards.

Questions 3, 4 and 5 should be discussed in pairs.

Cut out and give each pair one sentence from Post-visit handout 4: Discussion 2.

Ask the pairs to discuss whether they agree or disagree with the statements, and why.

Ask each group to present their views to the class.

This activity should be done on computers if possible. Ask students to answer the questions on Post-visit handout 5: Email in pairs.

Get students to feedback as a class.

Ask the students to plan and write a reply to the email.

1. I hate travelling by train – the carriages are always so dirty and uncomfortable.

2. I’d always prefer to go to France by Eurostar than on a ferry. If it’s a rough crossing I get seasick.

3. In my country going anywhere by car or bus always means a long and bumpy journey on dusty roads, full of potholes.

4. Most of the time I use public transport but sometimes having a car is very handy – like when I want to buy furniture or something.

5. I think public transport is crowded, unpleasant and expensive, but the biggest problem is how inconvenient it is. I don’t like having to wait or change buses and trains to get somewhere.

6. A lot of people think that cars are much more convenient than public transport but I’m not sosure–ifyou’restuckinatrafficjamitdoesn’treallymakeanydifferenceifyou’reinacar or a bus. If you’re on train or bus you can do some thing while you travel, like read or sleep!

real trains. I don’t know how they got them into the museum. How about the bit about other

cities: that was really interesting.
