dear friends and visitors to madrid, We are well into autumn now and can enjoy the display of greens, reds and ochres offered by the trees in our city’s streets and parks. But as well as this visual feast the capital will delight our ears this month with the annual Madrid jazz festival, a perfect opportunity to enjoy live music at any one of the many venues where this popular event is being staged. Madrid’s diary is always full but I would single out one item in particular: on 20 November the Prado Museum presents The Young Van Dyck, one of the finest exhibitions ever of work by this outstanding seventeenth century artist. These events will give you a taste of what is happening in Madrid these days but there is plenty more for you to discover in our magazine or just walking round the city. Enjoy Madrid!

The 29th madrid jazz Festival will take place from 6 November to 2 December. Patti Smith, Michel Camilo and Toma-tito, Martirio and the Chick Corea Trio are among the stars appearing.
The Madrid International Jazz Festival, which has now reached its 29th edition, has become a date that no jazz fan should miss. It is the autumn’s most eagerly awaited musical event and will open this year with a performance by Cuban pia-nist omar sosa and Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, who will be appearing to-gether at the Teatro Fernán Gómez on 6 November. In a show entitled Alma, the two musicians will create an intimate atmosphere through eleven compositions which skilfully combine Latin rhythms and brilliant, vigorous improvisation.
Until 27 November, when el negri will end the series of concerts at this venue with a tribute to Armando Manzanedo, it will be the scene of performances by such great figures as martirio with her show El aire que te rodea (10th), Tommy emmanuel (13th), Antonio Zambujo (14th), cowboy junkies (15th), stacey Kent (18th), ray lema (20th), jorge Pardo (22nd), Paquito d’ rivera (23rd) and the larry martin Band (24th), who are celebrating their 25th an-niversary as one of the leading exponents of Spanish jazz-blues.

The Prado’s latest exhibition is the first devoted to the work of Van Dyck (1599-1641) to be held in Spain. Focusing exclusively on his early period, the exhibition will span the years between 1613 to his departure from Antwerp for Italy in October 1621. Over the course of those eight years of his early career Van Dyck painted around 160 works, many of them large-format, ambitious composi-tions of which the Prado now possesses the most important collection.
Featuring ninety paintings and drawings, the exhibi-tion will allow for an in-depth study of the young art-ist’s career, highlighting the fact that his precocious talents revealed themselves not only with regard to the number of works that he produced but also their quality. Had he only produced these paintings from the first part of his career, Van Dyck would still be regarded as one of the most important artists of the 17th century.

Paul Gauguin’s flight to Tahiti is the theme running through this exhibition. A wide range of works by late nineteenth and early twentieth-century artists show how the voy-age to supposedly more authentic settings led to a transformation in creative language.

There is something contradictory in all of Nacho Torra’s work and this is especially noticeable in this exhibition. Once again he uses vigorous brushstrokes and bright col-ours in a constantly changing sequence, painting and repainting, repeatedly elimi-nating and adding elements.

Although Dallapiccola, the leading Italian representative of classicism in the first half of the 20th century, may seem to have little in common with Puccini, the two works presented together here deal with the same issue: both protagonists are victims of repressive moral dogmatism.

Set in Africa and starring its magnificent wildlife, this is probably one of the greatest stories ever told. The original Disney film’s outstanding musical content soon led to a colossal production of the story mak-ing its debut on Broadway. Only in Madrid.

Just behind Gran Vía avenue lies Triball, a laid-back area home to origi-nal stores filled with al-ternative fashion items, bars and unique restau-rants. It’s hard to define exactly where it starts and ends, since it melds with its neighbour Mala-saña, a favourite among young designers.

At the ripe old age of 102, Madrid’s Gran Vía is busier than ever. The same is true of Puerta del Sol and the nearby streets of Carmen, Preciados and Arenal. Sunday shopping has become a tradition in this area where national and international fashion chains and department stores line the streets.

Calle de Fuencarral has turned into a showcase of the latest trends. Trendy clothes are dis-played in the shop win-dows which extend as far as Chueca, packed with designer stores. The area boasts home furnishing shops, book-shops and much more. Just a short walk from Chueca lies Las Sale-sas, a bohemian alter-native to the Salamanca district filled with multi-brand stores.

After visiting the Art Walk, many may prefer to wander through the Literary Quarter and take home an antique book. Once the resi-dence of the writers of the Spanish Golden Age, the Literary Quarter, now almost entirely pedestri-anised, is living a new era. Old and new busi-nesses rub shoulders with each other, includ-ing second-hand book-shops, vintage furniture stores and even 21st century workshops filled with traditional crafts.

A labyrinth of charming streets surrounds Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace. Hapsburg Ma-drid is home to many of the capital’s centuries-old shops, where you can buy anything from hats to capes, similar to those Picasso once wore. Long-standing craftsmen reside next to cake shops selling typical pastries.

Diciembre Decembernavidad ChristMas
dDiciembre / December
Once December rolls around the city sheds its usual image and becomes more dy-namic and buoyant, starting with the turning on of the Christmas lights throughout the capital. A visit to the Christmas market in Plaza Mayor is a must, as is attending some of the concerts taking place at this time in churches and theatres, walking round the city to see its historical nativity scenes, and taking the children to see the Three Kings Parade on the evening of January 5.
