Advanced education developing world-class ophthalmologists
ESASOa Vision of Collaboration
| 3ESASO welcomes you
ESASO is a pioneer in post-graduate education in ophthalmology. We collaborate with individuals, groups and institutions to enhance expertise in ophthalmology and take the field into the future. Our approach is of a Vision of Collaboration, from fruit-ful partnerships with leading ophthalmologists and institutions worldwide. These collaborations are the source of cutting-edge knowledge, innovative and in-depth research, clinical leadership and a global outlook that is also reflected in the diversity and skills of our participants at the campuses at Lake Lugano in Switzerland, and in Singapore.
The School’s activities cover the study of all subspecialties, including medical and surgi-cal management of retinal conditions, cornea, refractive surgery, cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis, oculoplasty, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.
We hope that ESASO will continue to grow to become a leader in the field of ophthalmolo-gical training. We believe that by supporting the learning needs of tomorrow’s leading ophthalmologists, we are investing in better outcomes for eye patients everywhere.
We look forward to welcoming you to an inspiring learning environment that will challenge your perspectives, expand your horizons and unlock your full potential.
Yours sincerely
Borja Corcóstegui President Scientific Council

We understand that everyone’s learning needs are unique, whether you are pursuing post-graduate education, or fit-ting continued learning around your work. Our modular approach has been developed with the Bologna Process at its heart. All modules are structured to ensure consistency in the following areas: learning, recognition of achieve-ment, and application of new skills and knowledge to your practice.• Phase 1: Preparation. This phase lasts for 3 months, to allow for sufficient study time and consolidation.• Phase 2: Seminar. Hands-on training in real-life situa- tions over 1 week, followed by individual examination.• Phase 3: Transfer. Practical application of acquired knowledge to daily practice over 1 to 2 months.
ESASO conducts regular surveys after each module to guarantee quality and to ensure that our educational programme communi-cates the latest developments in the field and meets the diverse needs of our participants.
Module Programme Structure
For those wishing to pursue the highest level of training, the ESASO Fellowship is an advanced programme that could be considered equivalent level to a Masters for Advanced Studies (MAS) qualification. In pursuing this ultra-advanced line of study, highly-motivated and talen-ted ophthalmologists can specialise in a subject to refine and further develop their skills in the context of clinical ophthalmic surgery under the tuition of a renowned and prestigious faculty. ESASO Fellowships are truly unique as curricula are plan-ned in consultation with highly reputed and accredited academic and clinical bodies from around the world. Each ESASO Fellowship is offered annually, lasts 12 months and includes instructor-led and research based objectives. These include the following topic leads at world-leading ophthalmology institutions:
Fellowships
Financial supportTo ensure that high-achieving candidates have the best possible chance of participating in our Fellowship progra- mme, ESASO is pleased to provide grants of up to € 40,000 for two annual fellowships (subject to local funding of the international centre).

“Being part of the ESASO Eyelids Module faculty in January 2013 at my own University of Malta was an interesting experience. I had already been involved with providing cadaveric material for dissection in pre-vious courses and was very impressed by the way the dissections and training were planned and executed.ESASO is an important school of specialist training and I am proud that the Anatomy Department of our University can contribute as one of the campuses chosen.”Pierre Schembri-WismayerMMCPAth, Head, Department of AnatomyFaculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Malta, Malta
ESASO participants make us who we areWhile over 70% of our participants hail from Europe, we are proud to welcome ophthalmologists from around the world. We believe that the high uptake rate of the modules indicates the internationally recognised high standards of tuition and the opportunities for hands-on learning under expert direction. Together, our diverse student body and faculty form the ESASO Community, an intercontinental framework of knowledge and friendship. Participants also benefit from close contact with and guidance from their mentors.
Participant distribution in the world 2013
We carefully select participants to participate in ESASO programmes to ensure that learning with us is a highly rewarding experience. To encourage the development of a truly global network, ESASO partners in several interna-tional locations offer scholarships, so that potential par-ticipants can take advantage of every opportunity to learn from the best, to be the best.
