Wow! What an amazing start to our year we have had. Our Swimming Carnival was early on and it was fantastic to see students giving their personal best. Congratulations to all who attended, received ribbons or just had fun by cheering and participating. A special mention to Olive and Charlie who represented our school at the Zone Swimming Carnival. Our class has been travelling around the world, exploring different cultural celebrations and beliefs. The students have found it really interesting studying Chinese New Year, Ramadan, St Patricks Day, Bastille Day, Diwali and Hanukkah. They especially enjoy learning about the stories of these countries and why these celebrations occur. We have loved learning more about the sport of Tennis this term. Mark from Tennis Australia has been coming in each week to teach essential skills and we have put these to good use in our sport lessons. We have some real talent in S2A! STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Maths) activities have also seen the students thrive in our classroom. I have been so impressed by the creative and innovative thinking from the kids. How lucky am I to teach such awesome kids! Ms Anna Bailey

Class S2A for AWESOME!

Principal Report

Harmony Day and National Day against Bullying On Friday 15 March our school celebrated Harmony Day in conjunction with National Anti-bullying Day. Students engaged in multicultural and anti-bullying activities. Please see photos from the day. Recognition Assembly On Friday 12 April, Erina Heights Public School will be celebrating excellence and high achievement at the Recognition Assembly. The assembly will commence at 1:45pm in the hall. This is a great opportunity to acknowledge the academic efforts and achievements of our students. Students will be selling cakes during this time as part of school fundraising. A separate note inviting parents and carers to this special assembly will be distributed next week informing parents of their child's success. However, to maintain the surprise and intrigue in which students will receive Principal's Awards at this assembly, we request that all parents keep the names of reward recipients a surprise until they are announced on the day. We look forward to you joining us to help celebrate the special achievements of some of our outstanding students for Term 1. ICAS Competitions REMINDER NOTES HAVE GONE HOME This year, students in Years 3 to 6 are once again offered the opportunity to sit the International Competition & Assessment for Schools (ICAS) tests. There are six tests on offer again this year - Digital Technologies, Science, Writing, Spelling, English and Mathematics. Students may choose to sit one, or all of, the tests, which will be held 3 – 19 September. Closing day for payments Friday 5 April. If you would like your child to enter these competitions, please return the tear off slip from the note already sent home, along with payment, to your child’s class teacher. Please note, that if your child is absent on the day of the test we are unable to provide a refund as all test papers are paid for upfront. P&C Meeting The P&C meeting was held last night Tuesday 26 March. Thank you to those who attended. The P&C shared organised fundraising events for 2019. Information will be coming on this soon. Thank you to the P&C for the Casey voucher from last year’s fundraiser. The school Learning and Support Team purchased perishable and sensory resources. Students have started using them immediately.

School Uniform Adjustments for Winter 2019 The P&C have made a temporary adjustment to the winter uniform for girls. This temporary adjustment aligns to Department of Education and mandated changes that occurred in 2018. From winter 2019, the girls can wear bottle green legging / pant (see example) with the school sport polo. The school expects girls to wear their normal black school shoes and on sports days joggers. The P&C have formed a uniform committee to source and review the existing school policy. Mother’s Day Stall The Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Tuesday 7 May. Please put the date in your diaries. Parent Teacher Interviews This year parent teacher interviews will be held in Term 2 Week 3, May 13 – 17. For those parents / carers who are unable to make these times or require any further interview time this can be arranged at any time with your child’s class teacher upon appointment. The purpose of these interviews is to provide parents and carers with a ‘snapshot’ of how their child/children are progressing academically, emotionally and socially so far this year. Semester 1 reports will be distributed to all students on Monday 1 July (end of Term 2). All interview bookings will be made online. A separate note detailing the online booking system will be distributed through the school enews app which will provide instructions and event codes allowing parents with more than one child to coordinate times to suit. The link to the online booking system is also be available on the school website under the ‘Latest News & Features’ link Week 1 Term 2. Year Six Fundraising Thank you to the army of organisers and participants that ran the BBQ and cake stall on the Election Day to raise money for the Year Six Farewell. Thank you to the organisers who put it together so quickly and Mr Ward and Mrs Lanning for supporting this committee. Easter Activities – Looking forward to this! Staff are busy organising the school’s annual Easter activities. Week 10, Wednesday 3 April our school will have STEM activities. This will include K-2 making Easter hats and 3-6 students decorating cake boxes with selected themes. Week 11 Friday 12 April, the school will have a K-2 Easter Hat Parade and 3-6 Easter Cake stall including our school recognition assembly. Students are excited to be selling their STEM designed cake boxes during these school activities. Entering and Exiting School Grounds Entry and exit to school grounds at any time of the day should NOT involve walking through the staff car park. There are several handicapped drivers that use this during our busiest times of the day. This is a safety concern, please be vigilant and use the appropriate entry and exit gates. Please inform extended family members that may be picking up children as well. Vanessa Gordon Relieving Principal

NAPLAN This year we will be completing the NAPLAN assessments online. The only assessment that won’t be done online is the Year 3 and 5 writing. The assessments will be held for all Year 3 & 5 students in weeks 3 & 4 of Term 2 (Monday 13 May – Friday 24 May). In preparation for the assessments students will be involved in a practice online assessment during week 10, Wednesday 3 April. A note to parents regarding NAPLAN will be sent home closer to the assessments. Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Keep coughing kids home and see your GP. Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019. School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. What can you do to prevent whooping cough?

1. Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members 2. Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough 3. Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the infection to others, and see your GP to

get them tested for whooping cough For more information on Whooping Cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website(https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx) You can also find out about other important infectious disease alerts by visiting the alerts page(https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/alerts/Pages/default.aspx).
