Master’s Thesis

Chinese Cultural Center-Washington, DC US

Professional Design - Various Loca ons

This is an architectural thesis exploring bamboo not just as a material, but asking what the temporal nature of the material could mean for design. While bamboo is o en considered sustainable because of its considerable growth rate, few really embrace the nature of bamboo. To exhibit this concept thisproject follows the line from source to des na on, and from germina on to structure; not represen ng a fi nished object in single moment, but an idea that spans me. To do this, bamboo acts as a catalyst for a cultural center. It grows and matures and is harvested, it changes the space; and as it is used, degrades, and fi nally taken down, it changes the design. From seed to opera house and back again to the earth, the cycle breaths con nuous life into the site. The project, located near 7th and H Street, NW, in Washington, DC is a dual program - both cultural center and public garden. The “bookends” or exterior buildings on the site are a balancing force to the ephemeral nature of the bamboo. The terraco a bearing walls buff er the peaceful inside from the outside. Their roles serve as stage to the street, gatehouse to the garden, and armiture for the bamboo structures to be built upon. Their solidity holds in and allows the movement of me to ebb and fl ow with that of the bamboo grove.

I ended up in Guangzhou and later Hong Kong specifi cally because of where my thesis took me.

Ceiling, Retail, Wind Column Design, MaterialsA er comple ng design and documenta on for the Terminal and GTC our team was called back to design the interior of the Baiyun Interna onal Airport. Con nuing with the sleek aerodynamic forms used on the exterior of the building wave and birdlike forms were incorporated into the perforated ceiling panel design. With the semi-transparency of the perfora ons and the separa on in the panels the illumina on from the skylights makes the ceiling glow and gives a processional rhythm providing addi onal texture that fi ts within the minimalis c design. The retail areas in the concourses are simple and elegant. The basic forms are rec linear volumes accented with horizontal recessed lines and walls that mimic the geometry from the Wind Columns. Bright and open, the retail is invi ng and easily accessible. The wind columns mimic the retail design, with their leaning forms and strong curves, yet with a more industrial and aeronau c aesthe c.

Air Traffi c Control Tower (ATCT) and Support Facili es

The ATCT Complex design is clean and simple, allowing for minimal visual obstruc on and streamlined construc on.The support building provides assistance for the tower with administra ve offi ces and comfortable res ng space with areas such as toilets, showers, locker rooms, sleeping quarters, and kitchen and dining areas. The structure is made of concrete construc on with a 4.5m clearance to allow for ample u lity runs and equipment space. The building is enclosed with a white, stucco simulated EIFS panel that is low maintenance with provides an unclu ered appearance. The ATCT design breaks from a simple rectangular form yet s ll is easily constructed. Covered with tessellated white-fi nished concrete panels, the tower is an observably curvilinear shape that is ra onalized into fl at forms enclosing the control cabin, equipment room, and sleeping quarters within the top 3 levels.

Boracay Business Avia on Center (BBAC)

The BBAC is comprised of two intersec ng volumes with large can levered roofs. The transparent facade shows off a refi ned business terminal, servicing business and privately owned jets. The landside wai ng lounge entrance welcomes guest with a 8 meter long can levered roof covering a high ceiling. From here guests can linger in the wai ng lounge or passengers can go straight through security to relax in the the departure lounge. On the larger airside por on of the terminal, conferences can be coordinated, showers and restroom facili es are available to refresh, and passengers can relax and enjoy themselves in the departure and VIP lounges. A secure hallway separates the public area from the back of house, streamlining the security and baggage handling systems.

Passenger Terminal Building (PTB)

Ca clan Airport is situated across the strait from the famous beach resort of Boracay. Due to the need for larger airplanes and increased passenger capacity to the resort area, a comprehensive phased design for a completely new airport was necessary. All facili es including the PTB and Ancillary buildings (such as the Control Tower) required a ght budget and me schedule. Our team employed a simple and clean design concept lending to an open and airy environment that is environmentally sustainable and connects the passengers to the tropical atmosphere. The facili es construc on and management follow this approach and provide straight-forward implementa on and maintenance that can be achieved within local building standards.

When the VV Group (China’s largest soybean manufacturer) fi rst came too our team they wanted a fresh look for the shell design previously done for their new headquarters. Later the rear annex area was reprogrammed primarily to be used for a community center. As with most chinese headquarters a great amount of credance is given to feng shui when considering orienta on, situa on; and western New Empire” style” helped shape the building. Given these constraints we sketched many diff erent itera ons and played with ideas the client provided for us. Addi onally we also provided programming and layout for the annexed area to the north of the HQ tower. Originally designed as a mall the new program foc`uses more on a community center and facili es such as restaurants, and VIP spa areas for execu ve purposes.
